id personally like to hear what everyone thinks is the song that changed their life and made you respect music more.it does not necessarly have to be your favourite song ever, just the song that you think made the biggest impact on you...a song that changed the face of music in your life...

for me,it was octavarium by dream theater.when i bought this album,i was soooo excited cuz another 20 min + piece from DT so i waited the entire album tolisten to it as it was the last song on the album.so when it started i was sooo phsyced!! thru every passage and movement,i litterally was moved to near tears.going into it,i did not think they could EVER top a change of seasons, but they did in my humble opinion.this song made me feel unworthy musically and made me feel lucky to have heard it.still does to this day.i litterally laughed out loud with pure excitement and happiness..it was an amazing musical experience...i highly recommend you listen to it...it is 24 mins tho biggrin.gif

angry.gif THIS TOPIC DOES NOT PLEASE THE ALL-MIGHTY ME!

Actually it does. I quite like. For me, it would have to be album more than song, methinks. For that award, it is a tie. Dark Side of the Moon brought me to the world of Pink Floyd many years ago, and when Alyssa got me The Wall for my birthday last year, it ensured that I would never leave.

If it haaaaaaaaaaaaaaas to be an individual song though, I'd have to say Iris, by the Goo Goo Dolls. It has deja vu written all over it for me, and I come so close to tears whenever I hear it.

Musical experience, eh? Like, if acid or LSD was a song and you went on a trip to see a magical Australian wonderland?.....

What a fantastic thread.

However overdone it may be, the theme beginning about 3 min and 40 seconds into Winter from Vivaldi's Four Seasons absolutely grips me every time I hear it. I heard the darkest, most lyrical, passionate, amazing recording of it when I was little (I have no idea who it was by), and that was really what got me hooked on classical music. Anyway, it's always sort of haunted me. I had almost forgotten about it until the music comp unplugged performance, when it caused me to lose control of my tear ducts. Luckily no one noticed. ninja.gif Although it's by no means my favourite piece, it has a lot of meaning. Also tying for first place (however strange this may be) would be a particular recording of the Phantom of the Opera I found under the couch when I was practicing for ballet. When I saw it performed on my birthday in London last summer, I was completely overwhelmed about five seconds into the opening overture... I felt so alive.

I know the idea was the one top piece... and I've chosen two... but these tie for a close second: Scheherazade (Rimsky-Korsakov), 2 Nocturnes Opus 48 (Chopin)

Wow....well, this is a difficult question! Hm. The ones that come to mind AT THE MOMENT are all linked to the music program. Being in senior band last year was pretty amazing, and "October" (Eric Whitacre. Duh.) seems to stick in my mind more than any other song, which is funny, because when I first heard it I didn't like it at all. I actually can't listen to it now, because it makes me cry. "Go, Lovely Rose" is the song that made me realize that I wouldn't let something petty (like school, or sleep) ever get in the way of what I really loved to do, which was music. So yeah...those are the ones I can think of right now. "Get it On" made me seriously consider taking on music as a career for the first time, which is pretty cool. I still have not decided on that one, though tongue.gif.

There have GOT to be more that have just had such a profound effect that I have just forgotten about them--taken for something that's just PART of me, rather than something separate. I will keep you posted. smile.gif

AHHHH!!! I remember now!!! It was Shostakovich's 7th--the first movement in particular. The one theme that he repeats over and over again is one of the most beautiful lines I have ever heard. It makes me feel so free of all the stresses and weird stuff that goes on in the day to day, and it's full of passion and beauty, despite what it's actually about. I find it a rather touching story, and learning about Stalin and whatnot in socials this year just made it that much more real. Another little thing that sticks out in my mind is the Phantom of the Opera (props to Alison for pwning enough to expose me to it!!). It's like all the little pieces or two-second excerpts of songs that I loved most as a kid, all put together into an amazing opera of PERFECTION!! I've actually started to LIKE opera now (I always hated the stuff I'd heard before that), and it's also got me into musical theatre. Hurrah!!! Wow...that was a lot more than one song/musical experience. AND it's a double post. AMAZING!!!
