Title: Internet Personality vs Reality!
Description: How is your Internet life different?
Acer - March 10, 2005 10:30 PM (GMT)
How does your personality on the Internet differemt to your one in reality? And which really is your 'true self'. Do you really know what your true self is?
I remember I used to be completely different on the Internet. When I talked to people from school on MSN, they were all like - 'I thought you were so quiet'. I've always been quiet around people I don't know and don't really say much, however when I'm around those that I know well and am good friends with I'll be much more open and act more like my 'true self'. However, on the internet, I won't care as much if it's people whom I don't know well or rarely talk to. Part of this is because the internet allows so much more freedom, and because of you being relatively anonymous . You talk to people you'd probablly never talk to in reality.
Also, I always try and meet random people from all different parts of the Internet, like for example, I met people from chatting programs and gaming programs as well like IRC, Battle.net Products, Online Gaming, etc. Those are the great times that I've met these people, that's why, I sometimes talk to them really more than expected from AIM, MSN, YIM, and others.
Now I'm more myself in reality - but it still really depends who I'm with. That's the main difference with me. It takes good friends to bring my real self out and for me to be more open, where as on the Internet I can be more open to people I don't know as much. That's the purpose of this thread.
Anyway, how different are you in reality and online? If you're the same, and always acted like one, please explain as of why.
Zero - April 4, 2005 12:57 AM (GMT)
Well, sometimes for instance when your talking to someone online, you picture them in your minds as this person. When you see they're picture, sometimes your veiw on them changes. Also their voice/speech. Online they speak differently, unlike in real life it could be way off.
NomadWarrior - April 4, 2005 02:57 PM (GMT)
I am just myself, but that was different in my yesteryears. I can be funny while being serious, be fast in doing things but still taking it easy, doing my very best but throw a bone in sometimes ;)
Yeah, I'm not going to explain my old internet personality. Just too much work, too much time to write it all and it's not really helping. :)

A lot of people try to put on a show to make themselves cooler in a way.
For me, I actually think how you see me. but you could never tell in real life, because no one ever listens or cares. I can express myself on the internet so much easier, which is why it may seem I'm "acting" on the internet. But honestly, I am not.
I do believe FS is a prime example. A few people there are downright assholes, when they have the potential to be pretty awesome. However, being an asshole, they hope to gain some respect. And sadly, it works.
I speak my mind how it really is, because I can. People may not care, but at least they actually listen.

I'm completely right into your statement, Zero. I, myself, speak different for what I do, and what I want here to chat with online members. Speaking to people online in various ways MIGHT be different in your real life experiences. Sometimes, you never know if you're chatting with people that don't know you, or that they become strangers, or if they want to hunt you down. I mean, seriously, you need to take care of yourself, and act quickly if something comes up. You need to be a responsible person and have confidence in yourself if you got hurt or insulted by someone else that you don't know. How would you feel in that? Why would you act like it? How can you improve between going online and taking care of yourself in real life? Is there a difference between them?
Explain guys, and post your thoughts.

Yeah, Acer here could be crazy scientist from Planet Bla wanting to take over the world with his weird machine of doom :P.
But...I do not think so. ;)
I hope.
Anyways, I recently got a guy on the Messenger saying he would shoot fire balls from his eyes and lightning from his..ass... that would consume me. I just ignored it and talked over it and then it was done. Of course, he spelled it wrong, and he was only thirteen. Okay, can be as deadly too, but not s convincing. ;)
Yeah, just keep a gun under the bed and when you invite the guy or girl, put on a perimeter, security bots, security cameras with turrets and more.;)

Well... on the Internet I tend to be more outgoing and I probably say more than I should. In real life, I'm usually kind of laid back and quiet... I have to say the real life version of me is much more like me then the Internet one.
Blury_Vision - April 9, 2005 05:23 PM (GMT)
Yep, same for me too. I am considered fairly shy I guess, but I try to express my feeling when necessary. Obviously the real me would be different then to the internet typer. But oh well. It's not like I am a completley different person like a psycopath. Geeze.

I totally agree with you there. Everyone has their differences between online life and real life. I, too, have this feeling as well.
TheInvisibleMan - April 9, 2005 06:24 PM (GMT)
I met someone on D2 that seemed pretty cool when I was talking to them on the game. Then... I got his AIM screen name and started talking to him on that, and he turned out to be really annoying. Oh well, I suppose it was just differences between two online things, and so doesn't apply to this, but still, it's kind of like the same situation.

THat makes sense, you can express yourself on the internet better because rejection is almost non existant, or VERY indirect.
Exept if you go to FS. They will kick you while you are down.
**hmw** - April 9, 2005 08:10 PM (GMT)
85% of people i know online are shy...the internets a place for shy
people to be non shy...if you know what i mean...everyone says im
shy...but then again noone gets that i just dont like talking unless its
with someone i realy like...
Blury_Vision - April 9, 2005 11:13 PM (GMT)
*Sigh. It's a shame we couldn't just have a big meeting up. x_X <-- I don't really make that face in real life. o_O Or that one.
**hmw** - April 10, 2005 10:48 AM (GMT)
its never going to happen...unless we all go to a massive music concert together and bumb into each other say next to a big speaker...!...
but their are tooo many stupid pervs meaning we cant meet up coz are parents would never let us.....well mine wouldt...they dont even know i talk to strangers on the internet so if anyone asks you all go to durrington high!..
Acer - April 14, 2005 03:15 AM (GMT)
Then it might come to a shocking surprise. Meeting someone else online, and then meeting that same person you've talked to in online and you saw that person in real life! That person says to you: "Hey, are you that person from what I talked to the other day?" The person replies: "Like yeah." and all that crap. Then they started to ask their online user names and all that, and both people recgnoized them right away!
Sometimes, meeting people might be a fun experience for you, but you better watch your step. Lurking strangers might be looking for you to assault you or something. Just be careful.
**hmw** - April 14, 2005 06:36 PM (GMT)
and you all live in america...nobody lives in the south of england??..
im all alone.....! :(
Acer - April 14, 2005 08:05 PM (GMT)
United States of America. Most people live there. Some people live in Canada like me. I don't live in England. Maybe I should plan a trip on visiting that place.
**hmw** - April 15, 2005 04:59 PM (GMT)
i have allways wanted to go to canada...and im not allowed to go to america...but i feel like travelin round the world!
Acer - April 18, 2005 12:46 AM (GMT)
Yeah. I think your first stop to Canada is Ontario. My God, the greatest province you ever visited. ;)
**hmw** - April 18, 2005 03:14 PM (GMT)

Acer - April 21, 2005 10:13 PM (GMT)

TheInvisibleMan - April 22, 2005 07:25 PM (GMT)

Great way to not bring up the discussion we're having. Moving on...
You know... if the Internet doesn't really exist, what would we do in our every day lives? Any thoughts on that?
**hmw** - April 23, 2005 05:08 PM (GMT)
i would carry on..just spend more time shopping reading and listening to music..
and i would txt loads more..and then i would cry coz the internet is so interesting!

Yeah. It would be interesting if we have no Internet, we would be bored as hell. The Internet has a lot of things to discuss about. :P
**hmw** - April 29, 2005 09:07 PM (GMT)

That would be a great experience. To meet people, wouldn't it?
Giraffe - May 7, 2005 05:32 PM (GMT)
I love people. Especially talking to them when they are from different areas.
Onto the topic: I am not myself with my friends and I'm not myself on the internet. I'm more myself on the internet, because there's no fear of being denied or anything. I know myself inside though, so that's what I think counts. With my friends I'm a bit more crazy but not truly me... if that makes sense. With people online you can be anyone you want, I am sometimes. But you are rarely taken seriously AND funnily (if that's the right word) because its hard to decipher between sarcasm, seriousness, drunkeness, or just plain joking. I'll add more when I can think of more.
**hmw** - May 7, 2005 05:38 PM (GMT)
hmmm...true true...i agree with that... :)
Giraffe - May 7, 2005 06:51 PM (GMT)
Here's a little tip: I am most likely being sarcastic if it's not serious...

Great statement there, Giraffe. Good post too. Since it's like communication, we need to communicate with one another. You are the one that relies on yourself, and that is true. You do the things, your own way, not theirs. It's you that controls it.

Indeed. Maybe I should make more of these wonderful threads for you. Hmm...
Giraffe - May 8, 2005 06:17 PM (GMT)
Now I really feel special!
I have an add-on: When I talk to my friends online I tend to be my usual self but my friends are just like me so there's no difference. It's only with people I don't know well I act differently...
Acer - May 10, 2005 01:26 AM (GMT)
So it would seem... Your acts of behaviour would be:
Talking With Your Friends That You've Known: You will react as your usual self, like you said, and talked normal and friendly as well.
Talking With Strangers That You Don't Know Well: You will react differently, going crazy to hyper.
That's my own opinions on your sense of behaviour when chatting with your reliable friends and when talking to unknown people.
