Behind The Veil

[Kathleen Allan]

"Well, given who and what we are, getting dressed quickly becomes an essential skill," Kathleen joked dryly, unzipping her purse and holding it out to her packmate. "I don't mind at all." She inhaled slowly, taking in the scent of the street around her.

Talisa wasted no time in placing her jeans in the bag, before zipping it up for her alpha and flashing her a smile. "So, care to lead the way?" She asked, knowing that she would since Talisa didn't know where the guesthouse was. Hopefully sometime along the way she would be able to find out what Kath was keeping from her.

With a quick jerk of her head, Kathleen indicated their direction of travel. She checked her jewellery to be sure it was all secure, then began to run. Like most Garou, she was quite fit, easily able to set a brisk pace for the jog. In spite of her heels, she moved quickly with her pack beta.

She was silent for the first block, letting Talisa and herself have some time to get used to her pace. Then she turned her head slightly to the Fury. "Tell me about your girlfriend," she asked.

Talisa jogged behind Kathleen, not saying a word. She was a bit uncomfortable with the silence, but got used to it just before she got asked a question by her alpha.

"Jeanette? Well, I've known her for a few years, not too long after I came out to my aunts. She's two years older then me, but we got along great. We were just walking together when a group of thugs attacked us. They were about to rape her when my first change happened."

"The Fury pack that found us took her with them to my aunts, since they figured it would help if I didn't think I had killed her during my frenzy. She was a bit distance to begin with, and the Furies forbiding her from leaving the house without someone going with her only made matters worse. However she eventually came to accept what I had become, and after a few more months the Furies recended their restrictions. I'm still responsible for anything she does though, I got quite a few lectures about it from the elders."

"Is she kin? That would be a lucky thing. How much does she know about what you do?" Kathleen pumped her arms, trying to drive up her heart rate a little. Training is training, even when it's transportation after all. She's alert to their surroundings, watching passersby and the little events that make up the everyday as the pair of Garou dash past.

Talisa thought about shaking her head, but realized that her Alpha probably wouldn't see it, so she verbalized it. "No, just a normal girl. That's why the elders made her stay at my house unless she had a kinfolk or Fury watching her. It was only a few months ago that they allowed her more freedom. Protecting the veil and all that. She only has a basic understand about what I am, and she only knows that I fight evil. Why do you ask?"

"Priorities. The Veil." Kathleen's jaw sets immediately, the Silver Fang stoicism surging forward. "What will you tell her about where you are moving? Jason should be aware of the reasoning, at least. In case they ever cross paths." She covers that moment of discomfort well, forcing herself to sound neutral as possible.

Talisa heard the sudden shift in her alpha's tone straight away. She wasn't sure what caused this change, but by her words perhaps it was that the Silver Fang didn't approve of Jeanette's knowledge of the Garou, however limited it was.

"Well, I just say it's tribe stuff and she goes along with it. Something the elder's told her after my change or something, I never asked. If your worried about her breaking the veil, don't. The way the furies explained it to me was that the veil was made because knowledge could be used to hurt us, but since Jeanette loves me her telling anyone would only hurt me which hurts her, so there's no risk of that happening. I swear, I guarentee it on my life."

The mask slips for a very brief second. The corners of Kath's mouth tug down, and there's a glimpse of very real pain. Then the composure returns, the suburban housewife overtakes the strong alpha and Kathleen subconsciously straightens up. "I know," she says, her voice sounding just a touch rough. Then she runs slightly ahead, literally fleeing any initial attempts to question her on exactly what just happened in her head.

Talisa saw a glimpse of pain on the alpha's face, before receiving a quick reply before increasing her pace, leaving Talisa a bit confused and struggling to make up the pace. By the time she's caught up her first instict to ask what was wrong had disappeared. She tried to ask several times, but the words failed to come out of her mouth. Finally she decided to change the topic.

"So, your husband. Is he a nice man?"

"He is. Very mild-mannered. He's quite intelligent as well." She slows down a little, as though she's noticed that she's accelerating much too fast. "I think you'll get along with him. He's an excellent cook." She could be talking about a friend, based entirely on body language and tone of voice-there's hardly a sign of passion or longing in her voice.

Talisa was thankfull the pace slowed down, but was a bit worried that Kath's tone was devoid of...well, love. Was she so in control of her emotions that she could speak without letting them get in the way? Or did she just not have that spark with him and only married him out of duty?

Talisa didn't want to talk about it, so she pretended like she hadn't noticed. "That's nice. Jeanette's a bit of a cook too, so maybe he could give her some lessons. Um, will he be going into the guest house? Because if you haven't already heard from some of the Fury elders, I don't exactly wear a lot."

"He's aware of the purpose of the guest house. He won't disturb you, knowing you're living there. He's a homebody." There. A slight bit of affection from the stolid Silver Fang.

Talisa had to ask herself it what she heard was indeed some kind of emotion resembling love. She however was releived that she didn't have to worry about modesty. "Alright then. So, is there anything you need me to ask my contacts? Or anything I need to do while I'm out on patrols?"

[Kathleen Allan]

"Find out where the aspiring stars go to hang out. Where the protestors in the riots gathered. Significant spots in the city's history will be good places to start seeking out the totem spirit." Back in her element, Kathleen sounds much more relaxed. "That aside...find out if anyone's behavior has changed drastically recently. We could do worse than begin our initial hunts against fomori."
