Image linking

Mind if I make a minor suggestion to the members here?

If you choose to use an image that is on someone else's web-site, then I highly suggest not hot-linking to the file on their web-site because it uses their bandwidth which, generally speaking, isn't cool because it will increase their bandwidth usage which costs them more money in operating overhead, and in the case of free websites could, inadvertently, get their site turned off for excessive bandwidth usage.

Just a suggestion to keep in mind, nothing more.

I would think that photobucket would be okay with it, since they are set up to link their photos to everything. LOL

but still, we are using up the bandwith of a very good free website

my point is, anywhere you go, you're going to be using up bandwith. be it to host the picture or use the picture.

Wrong.

Hot-linking to an image on someone else's website is using up bandwidth that you didn't pay for, but they did (in the case of paid web-hosting), or the limited bandwidth allocated for freely hosted websites. It is one thing for their bandwidth to be used in the displaying of their website on your computer, but it is another thing entirely for their website to run out of bandwidth for a certain period of time and get shut down because a bunch of people decided to hotlink images from that website for their own personal use on forums or on their own web-sites.

Consider hot-linking to images on someone's actual website not intended as an image host as bandwidth theft.

what I was saying is I haven't paid for any bandwith on the internet. and since this is one of those freely hosted websites with limited bandwidth allocated, and more over it's one that I use and am a part of, I would rather use bandwith from somewhere else.

and I'd like to mention that that my somewhere else is predominantly photobucket

ALSO: just for kicks, I invite others to steal thief's avatar. I would myself, but...yeah...

Sites like Photobucket and Imageshack exist so you can do that.

I was referring to using images from sites that are not intended to be used as image hosts, and haven't expressly given permission to everyone to hot-link to their site.

so then, what about places like deviantart or myspace, which are huge, and can easily take many hits to their bandwith, but aren't designed specifically for hotlinking?

gisie, stop being nit-picky and rules-lawyering this.

But, if you wish to continue, I'll just say "No" unless you have the artists permission to do so (DeviantArt) or the video has embedding enabled (my space).

There is no more to be said, gisie.
