Pern's answer to cats, firelizards (also called flits or flitters) are adorable little fluffmuffins, full of reptilian glee. They are useful for many things: carrying messages, helping dragons to 'sight' when going between, even fighting thread. They will steal chess pieces, and strangling them may be thereputic, but we will leave that to the discretion of the players.
As firelizards are not genetically modified in any way, the potential for mutation is greater. Blackrock Weyr has many more colours than the usual 5 as a result. All firelizards should be banded with their owner's sigil or a collar.
Each character has a limit of 4 firelizards. Each player has a limit of 10 over all of their characters. Characters may begin with up to 2 canon-coloured firelizards (Gold, Bronze, Brown, Blue, Green).
Gold
Gold firelizards are the largest of the flits and the largest female, and are the lizards that are able to lay clutches containing gold, bronze and brown eggs. They are rare, and golds are available on request to an admin via PM. Gold firelizards are about 2.5ft in length, and tend to dignified personalities.
Silver
The second largest lizards, silver queens can lay clutches as golds do, but cannot lay gold eggs. They are more inclined to produce copper, violet and black eggs than gold queens, but rarely bronzes. About 2.3ft long, and they tend to aloofness.
Bronze
The biggest of the males, bronze lizards are protective, intelligent companions. They are able to fly gold and silver queens, and produce the best clutches with them, as they have the most stamina of any of the males. They are about 2ft long, and vary between a rich orange-golden colour to a green-tinged gold.
Copper
Handsome, metallic red firelizards, coppers are very rare and tend to occur more in silver clutches. They are the same size as bronzes, faster, but not as strong. About 2ft long, and they tend to be hyperactive and excitable.
Brown
Brown lizards have a reputation of being the calmest of the firelizards, and they combine a good size with a relaxed temperament. Browns can clutch with queens, though they produce inferior eggs, without queens or bronzes, and prefer greens and violets anyway. About 1.8ft long, and inclined to be placid. Browns often have dappled hides, or points like a siamese.
Red
Red flits are male, and around the same size as brown lizards. As with their copper cousins, they are faster and lighter than browns, but at the expense of their stamina. They usually chase violets and greens, and the occasional fertile black, if they can keep up. About 1.8ft long, reds tend to be chatty, gregarious and friendly. They come in shades from a medium pink to a deep blood red.
Violet
Violets are much like blues, except they are often female and can clutch eggs. Violet firelizards invariably produce stunted clutches, however, that consists of a mix of greens, blues, white and black hatchlings, with a high incidence of dead eggs. They are particularly chatty, known for crawling over their owners at inopportune times. 1.6ft long, known for being hyperactive and talkative. They do not have a wide range of shades, tending to a deep royal purple.
Blue
Blue lizards, more than any of the other colours, come in a dazzling variety of shades, from a pale, almost lilac colour to a deep rich navy. They are excellent companions, combining a compact size with good speed and stamina, and are often used as messengers. Blues often chase greens. About 1.5ft long, known for being easily trained.
Green
Green firelizards are possibly the prettiest of the lizards: dainty and especially fast, they are the sort that has earnt the breed the name 'flitters'. Greens are fertile, and lay clutches that they tend to abandon. They are not as intelligent as golds, silvers or bronzes, but have a great deal of energy and incorrigible, loyal natures. Greens are about 1.2 ft long and come in a variety of shades from a pale spring green through to green-black.
Black and White
Black (and white) firelizards are the smallest firelizards of all, and the rarest, as they must be freed from the egg. The result of some minor defect, these firelizards are tiny, but especially loyal to their owners. They are clever, but fragile, and must be well cared for. Black lizards are female or neuter, and tend to a duller black hide, occasionally with a slight silvery sheen. Whites are male or neuter, with traces of blue, brown, green and bronze on their hides and are never pure white. They are only 1 ft long, highly empathic, but physically quite fragile and prone to getting the sniffles.
