Lucy leant back on her couch, looking around her new apartment. It wasn't all that bad, she decided, as she looked over the cheap furniture brightened only by a few cushions. She was glad of the splashes of colour in the otherwise extremely bland room. On the whole, Lucy felt that she'd done rather well -- she had a home, a job which provided a well enough income and gave her a chance to help people, and she would soon begin getting to know her coworkers and students. She hadn't been up to the school just yet to see her classroom, but she trusted it would have all the equipment she required. Desks, pillows. Pillows? A seemingly strange request, no doubt, but they were very neccessary for her class.

Her eyes began to slide shut, but a loud THUMP from the general vicinity of the kitchen woke her. Not again! She really must see to fixing that cupboad shelf. It had been collapsed when she'd come, and no amount of super glue had kept it up. Lucy was glad she had made the decision to refrain from putting possessions on there; it had fallen down so many times, whatever she might have put on there would probably have been smashed many times over by now. She twisted slightly as the door creaked; it had been left ajar so that the room wasn't clogged up by dust as she was moving furniture. Now, she stood and looked around the room once more, making sure that everything was just perfect. Well, as perfect as it could be on a small budget.

They had only met a earlier that day, and she did prove to be trueful when it had come to Ruby. He rubbed his left arm a little, chuckling to himself. It had been fun while it lasted. Then she had to go and pull that damned knife. "Oh, well, she won't be up to those tricks any time soon." He said to himself as he climbed the last step up to the floor that he knew Lucy's appartment to be on.

As he made his way down the hall looking at the door numbers he noticed the one with her number on it slightly open, and as he reached it he heard a loud thuding noise. He paused a moment, before looking through the cracked open door to see what was going on. He could see Lucy standing beside a couch and see the small attached kiten, and upon further inspection he saw that she was staring at a cupboard that had for some reason fallen off the wall. Not wanting to be rude he knocked on the door causing it to open a bit more than what it had been, and he calmly waited on her reply.

Lucy spun around, her dark hair twirling around her as she did so. Upon seeing who it was at her door, she said: "Oh. It - it's you." She tried to keep her voice steady, but it shook slightly nevertheless. She turned back to the cupboad, crossing the room to stand by the shelf, and in doing so turned her back on James. She hoped he hadn't seen the fear in her eyes as she'd realized he was there. She grasped the shelf that had fallen, and lifted it unsteadily. She was shaking just as much, if not more, than she had been in the hotel earlier. Had she really let the location of her home slip through her barrier?

Still kneeling with her back to him, head bowed, motionless, she asked, "So, why have you come here? Get kicked out of the hotel for killing the barmaid?" Silently, she added, <What do you want from me?> Lucy was terrified, convinced that he had a reason to want her dead. Was it because she was Cured? Did he know about her mother, was he going to punish Lucy because of something she had done? He couldn't touch the mother, so he was going to take revenge on the daughter? Was he an enemy of her Masters, had he followed her here?

She kept her thoughts tightly enclosed within her own mind, however. No need to give him the satisfaction of knowing what she was thinking. She took deep, slow breaths, trying to calm herself. "Well," she said quietly, "You might as well come in."

He stepped in his foot steps silent. He remained quiet. He knew that he had upset her earlier and he didn't want to upset her further. The one thing that was standing out to him besides her shaking was the amount of fear he could smell coming off her. He set his bag down, opening it slightly reached in and pulled out a loose nail and a hammer. He walked up silently behind her and crouched down behind her. And worked around her his head just behind her right ear he reached over and placing the nail against the wood and held the hammer ready. He whispered softly and quietly in her ear. "You don't need to fear me, Lucy." With that said he swung the hammer in one swift movement and sunk the nail into both the wood and the wall. He tested its strength slightly before standing up and walking back to his bag where he had left it close to the door he slipped the hammer back in, and turned to face her as he stood by the door.

He watched her quietly for a bit before smiling gently. "To answer your second question first. No I didn't get kicked out of the hotel for killing the barmaid." He pulled his coat off his left arm to show a slightly bloody bandage wrapped aruond his upper arm. "You were right about her by the way. I should have listened to you about that. And now to answer your first question I'm here to talk."

With that said he let his mind open and aloud his thoughts to reach out to her. He wasn't doing it in a forcible manner, but rather in a friendly manner that told her he wasn't hostile. However he did mentally reprimand himself for letting that one thought slip out that he had meant to keep to himself. The one he had, had while he watched her leave the hotel. "Wow she looks really good in that skirt." He still stood there watching and waiting for her to respond to his actions.

Lucy remained motionless, eyes closed, as his thoughts reached her. Starting slightly, and recoiling inside her own defences as one thought he had meant to keep hidden reached her, she strengthened her own shield as she realized that she had not been supposed to know that. For several minutes she focused on keeping herself calm, her breathing steady, and her mind anchored firmly within her own body as she let his thoughts wash over her, hearing only an indistinct babble of voices and a few incoherent flashes of images. Soon she began to pay more attention, however, following certain trails of thought rather than just letting his mind flow around her.

Soon enough, however, she found herself standing before a door. A door she remembered him mentioning during their previous meeting. "The only thing that I ask you not to do in my mind is go through the door marked with a crescent moon on it." His words ran briefly through her mind, followed by his warning. "Because if you do, you will die." Lucy felt herself materializing, so to speak, in front of the door. <Why is this door so dangerous?> she asked him, as more of the scene appeared. She was standing in a long hallway, and this was the only door.

As Lucy had become engulfed in his mind, two major things had occurred. Her defences had weakened. To counteract this, she tightened the wall around her innermost thoughts -- thoughts of her mother, her childhood, her curing, and her Masters -- and sacrifices some of her lesser defences in order to do so. No doubt he now shared her memories of setting up the apartment and such, but that didn't matter to Lucy. The other thing that happened was her body collapsing, apparently unconscious, as though in a deep sleep.

James caught Lucy as she began to fall. He carried her over to the couch and lay her down upon it. He looked down at her and a soft smile came to his lips. He brushed a few strands from her face before sittind down on the floor his back against the couch and closed his eyes. Within moments he was standing right behind Lucy's astral form just as she had asked herself that simple question. That one little question that had ended the lives of so many others.

"It is not the door its self that dangerous," James said walking up beside her. "It is what resides behind that door that is dangerous. Behind this door lies my most primal instincts. The insticts that are amplified ten fold when a normal human is changed into a lycan."

"Unlike most lycans I have been able to close this door. This is what allows me to transform at will. As well as keep my mind when I am transformed. If you walk through that door you will be killed by the beast that dwells there. A beast that has killed so many before you."

He turned to face her his face serious. "Now please though I do enjoy these little trips into my mind I do prefer to talk face to face in the physical realm." With that said he shut his mind to her forcing them both back to the physical plain of existance.

"Now, where were we before everything got out of hand earlier?" he asked with a smile leaning his head back to look up at her. The one thing he didn't realize however was that when he did this his head rested against her upper thigh.

Lucy gasped as she was forced back into her body. She sat up, forcing his head away from her thigh as she did so. She ached from the sudden return to her physical form, and her head pounded. He would pay for that.

"You could have warned me you were about to do that." She twisted her head side to side, trying to ease the pain. "Now, tell me. How did you know what I am?"

"When you've lived as long as I have you pick up a few things here and there," he said smiling at her. "And sorry about the sudden return. Like I said though I prefer to talk face to face."

He stood up and took a few steps away from the couch, then raising his hands above his head stretched his back causing several joints pop all at once. He shook his head letting out a long harsh noise that made him both look and sound like an animal.

"But you know," he said softly as he turned to look at her. "I must say I never expected to see someone like you hear. I have only heard of your kind through rumors. Never really thought I would ever meet a..... Any way you said something earlier about helping me acquire a position up at the school."

(don't worry about it. I've also been away for a while, and I too have been known for some pretty short replies including I think this one. But I digress. Hope you liked it and looking forward to continuing this.)
