Has anyone noticed that we have bad ass colonel, a tactical genius, a machine gun toting brute, a generic 'hero', a more bad ass generic 'hero', a tank commander, the obligatory 'not quite right guy', and a guy who runs around on a horse. But, where is the uber sniper?

As you can tell, I'm refering to special characters. It seems odd to me that GW omitted some sort of sniper expert, when the codex is so chocca with all other kind of specilaistions. Sniper is one of those professions we almost expect to be hyped.

Well I, running on coffee and just doing something for the hell of it, am going to rectify this. By making up rules on the spot, to be honest.

Master sniper _______ ________

Ws: 3 Bs: 5 S: 3 T:3 W:1 I:4 Ld: 8 Sv: 5+

Equipment: Sniper rifle (so inventive), Laspistol, Flak armour, frag grenades

Squad size: 1 (unique)

Special Rules:
Infiltrate, stealth,

Master Sniper: Cover saves cannot be taken against shots from the Master Sniper.

Champion shot: Once per game, the Master sniper may fire a champion shot. This shot is fired as normal, but is resolved at Str 10 ap1, and rolls 2D6 ap against vehicles (note: I stole these rules from GW, so call cheese on them!!!)

Thoughts?

wasnt there a Ratling Sc somewhere? Or am I thinking previous editions?

The assassins serve the essential same thing. We have too many sc in the game as it is why make more?

Rather than denying cover saves I'd have Master Sniper allow the shooting player to allocate the wound.

I have a vague recollection of a Ratling special character too, but nothing definite like a name or abilities.

Now, why make more named characters? Because it's fun! You don't actually expect to use them, perhaps outside of a handful of house games or scenarios. Writing unusual games with odd characters and different FoCs is one of the more rewarding aspects of the hobby I find. Certainly it makes for a better game than the traditional Napeolonic "line up, stand 'n' deliver" games.

Stumper Muckstart was the ratling sharp shooter from the 2nd edition IG codex. I didn't muck like his fluff but the name has always stuck with me.

Question 1. Why can't we just name him Mkoll and be done with it? Or is Larkin the sniper... its been a while since I read GG.

Question 2. Why not modify the Vindicare rules?

Larkin is the sniper. Mkoll was the second in command after Gaunt. Ranwe is now second in command.

Major Sharpe Edits: Actually Mkoll was 5th or 6th down the chain of command for most of the series, moving further away in the more recent installments. He's one of the regiment's senior sergeants, but he's in line behind all of the Majors and Captains. For some reason the Tanith 1st does not have leuitenants. The jump seems to be directly from sergeant to captain, however sergeants for all intents and purposes are treated like LTs.

Corbec, damn you're right. Mkoll is the head scout.

I'm too used to seeing Mkoll around these boards and knowing he's in charge that I get confused sometimes.

That would make me very, very happy. Keep the basic rules, dumb down the statline a bit (I'm specifically looking at WS 5, STR & T 4, I 5, A 3, and LD 10. Maybe drop WS, STR, T and I to 3, and LD to 9?), and maybe get rid of the special ammo. But keep infiltration, roll to see him, and the spy mask (call it an AN/PEQ or somesuch).

I would have to agree toning down the various assassins would solve the problem.
