Hello folks

Had a big tournament this weekend: 5 battles, the first 2 at 1500 points, the next 3 with those 1500+reinforcements (to 1750). The battles were:

Seize Ground (3 objectives) / Spearhead Deployment – 1500 pts
Annihilation / Dawn of War Deployment – 1500 pts
Seize Ground (5 objectives) / Pitched Battle Deployment – 1750 pts
Capture & Control / Pitched Battle Deployment – 1750 pts
Annihilation / Spearhead Deployment – 1750 pts

Sadly, of the close to 40 players pre-registered, only 24 actually attended. Chickens thumbs_down_2.gif

This was my 1750 roster (edited for clarity; shows just upgrades):

1750 Pts - 5th Edition Roster - Phoenix Brigade - 3rd Battalion

Company Command Squad @ 90 pts (Grenade Launcher x1; Sniper Rifle x1)
Commander and Fleet Officer

5 Sneaky b******s @ 50 pts (ratling snipers)

4th Squad - A Company @ 190 pts (Heavy Flamer; Meltagun x2)
1 Veteran Sergeant (Power Weapon)
1 Chimera (Heavy Flamer; Extra Armour)

2nd Squad - A Company @ 190 pts (Heavy Flamer; Meltagun x2)
1 Veteran Sergeant (Power Weapon)
1 Chimera (Heavy Flamer; Extra Armour)

1sq Squad - B Company @ 115 pts (Plasma gun x1; Sniper Rifle x2)
1 Veteran Heavy Weapon Team (Lascannon)

2nd Squad - B Company @ 125 pts (Plasma gun x2; Sniper Rifle x1)
1 Veteran Heavy Weapon Team (Lascannon)

4th Squad - B Company @ 125 pts (Plasma gun x2; Sniper Rifle x1)
1 Veteran Heavy Weapon Team (Lascannon)

301 Night Cats - B flight @ 130 pts (Vendetta; 3 twin lascannons)

Recon Company - 2nd Platoon @ 40 pts (Sentinel, Autocannon)
Recon Company - 3rd Platoon @ 40 pts (Sentinel, Autocannon)

2nd Support Company - 3rd Squadron @ 270 pts
1 Executioner "Holy Fire" (Lascannon; Plasma Cannon Sponsons x2; Dozer Blade; Extra Armour)

1 2nd Support Company - 5th Squadron @ 200 pts
1 Nex Ferrea (Leman Russ; Lascannon; Heavy Bolter Sponsons x2; Extra Armour)

3rd Support Company @ 185 pts (Camo Netting)
1 B Battery (Colossus Siege Mortar; Camo Netting; Extra Armour)

Total:1750

The 1500 version lost both Sentinels and the standard Leman Russ

First battle: Chaos Space Marines
I can safely say I won thanks to the Fleet Officer. In the opponent’s reserve turns 2-4 the officer ruined almost all reserve rolls: a squad of Chosen managed to enter in the 4th turn, killed the Colossus then died, but the 2 Termie squads only entered in the 5th, so hooray. Rest of the battle consisted of me pretty much forcing the rest of his army to where I could blow it up. Result: we each got 1 objective, but I caused loads of VPs, so I won 16-4. Medals also for the Ratlings, who not only survived 3 rounds of Vindicator shooting (i.e., 3 rounds in which the Vindicator didn’t fire at anything else!) and a psychic attack by a demon prince… who suffered a wound from a failed psychic test!

Second Battle: Bugs
Well... what can I say? At the end of the game, I had half a squad left. Managed to get 5 kill points (for killing 5 units), which meant I didn’t get 0 battle points, but… with 3 giant beasts popping up under you, what can we do? 17-3 for the bugs, which was far better than the 20-0 I anticipated.

Third battle: Raven Guard: an excellent terrain for IG: almost nowhere for enemy to hide!
Basically, SM infantry trying to advance on foot. I pretty much shot up everything in sight, including the more dangerous ones: assault squad and Vanguard (Executioner and Colossus). One Sentinel charged Shrike (caught him alone) and managed to slow him away from a foot squad who was contesting an objective. Another squad (from a Chimera) held a tactical squad away from an objective, in hand to hand, after the sgt killed 2 SMs with his power axe. 17-3 for me.

Fourth battle: same terrain vs Might Lords
The dice gods abandoned me on this one. In the first 3 rounds of shooting, all I did was blow the battlecannon of the Defiler. His Land Raider pretty much laughed off everything that fired on it. The only thing that prevented a massacre was the fact that my opponent failed loads of cover saves (even +3, from a bunker!). Lost by 17-3

Last battle: Demons
Frustrating battle: his army was small, my army was big. So I knew that, unless I wiped him out, I’d always loose. I failed…
He deployed his army (mostly foot troops) in as wide a formation as possible, thus denying most of my templates, and left the dirty work for the demon princes. One, using a psy power I can’t remember (but which I call “go fish”) pulled 2 squads to him and wiped them out in hth, before I killed him. Stupid positioning on my part gave him both Sentinels and the snipers (yeah, I know… dumb). Killed both demons princes and a demon unit, so… last score was 16-4. Again Fleet Officer did well, ruining a reserve roll and an outflanking.

All in all, a fun time was had. I did better than expected, since I don’t have much play time. A few things to consider for the future:
-Colossus: I like the “no cover”, but truly atrocious scatter rolls all weekend (killed 6 enemies in 5 battles!) is making me think twice about it. The only battle it did anything good was vs the SM, killing 4 Vanguard. The fact that it always scatters (due to being barrage) is making me rethink it’s use. Another IG player there was very happy with the way his Manticore was behaving, so I’ll build mine (at last…) and try it.
-All vets vs mix or all normals: I compared my army with the 2 others present. One had all normal troops, the other a mix. I came to the conclusion that I prefer my list. Only 50 troops, yes, but those troops shoot a heck of a lot better. And, although I brought 2-3 fewer heavy weapons, I actually had more assault/special ones.
-Tank mix: the Executioner’s blast is truly awesome… but the range is short! I think, next time, I’ll use 2 regular Leman Russ, with plasma sponsons.
-Power weapons: I now deeply regret not getting the points to fit the sgts of the 2 squads on Chimeras with power fists. I could have killed the psyker Demon prince in hth...
-Ratlings: awesome. In the first battle they absorbed 3 Vindicator shots and caused a self-inflicted wound on a Demon Prince (failed psychic test). Afterwards, they never caused many casualties, but they always managed to annoy, harass and generally cause far more trouble than they are worth. 50 points well spent.

Here are pics of the tournement:

Saddly my camera killed itself a couple of days ago. I'll try posting pics of my army ASAP.

Aaaah, those old school Dark Angels made me wanna give mine a more "up to date" paintjob.

There were some rather nice boards; must have been a pleasure to play on those.

BTW, what gives??? I counted at least 3 Eldar armies...last time I had the pleasure of shooting Eldar was at the start of 4th edition.
