thinking of adding one to my artillery company (maybe using sisters repenta figures ) in a chimera for survivability to add another nasty template and maybe the ability to help pin a unit (but not sure this is that useful as things I'd really need to pin are normally fearless ) So are they worth it? whats peoples experience in using them and would i be better adding another artillery peice to 2 strong squadrons instead? (I have 2 medusa, x2 basi, x2 colossus, plus a griffon i add to one platoon) and a master or ordnance in my normal load out

Are they worth it, to me of late, I've found them more of a points sink than making their money back?
Why? Here is my experiences....
1) Eldar with the Runes that makes you roll 3 dice and Psychic Hoods.
2) Random AP, my dice seem to dislike this concept, I never got above a 4 in any decent shot I got off.
3) I tend to play alot of Fearless armies in my area. So, great, it makes one of their powers utterly useless.
Now mind you, this may work better for you but my luck with them has been sour. I am giving other things a try to see if I can find something else that balances my list better than them.

| QUOTE | Fantastic against elite, non-fearless units when used in conjunction with something else that forces a morale check. I have run many an expensive unit off the board after only killing one or two members of their squad, due to the negative modifiers incurred by their power.
Depends on who you face. They are certainly a very fragile unit, but they can be devastating if used well. |
Basically this.
Otherwise, like with any other unit, how good they are depends on your army. If you're just cherry picking them because they look cool, then they likely won't do much for you. If you build them into your army list however, they have a lot of potential.
As it stands the primary thing you're paying for is their power that lowers enemy LD. The lightning strike is gravy, but about 50% of the time it can down MEQ's so it's still a worthwhile weapon.
The general strategy should be to target an enemy unit, drop their leadership to 2, and then either attempt to pin them or make them fall back. Making opponents fall back (off the board if they're fast) is usually the preferable choice, however pinning is a useful secondary option.
As for deployment, at the very least they need to be in cover. Otherwise your best bet is to stick them in a chimera, but honestly that's somewhat of a points sink.

165pts including a Chimera....too expensive? They have the ability to fire a strength 9 ordnace templet, or make a 500pt unit run away....possibly off the board.
Granted, they are less effective with Njal and Rune Priest everywhere. They do have a 36" range though.

I can get that template cheaper, and with less risk of failure. And the same with the unit running off the board.
Plus they are not that useful with psychic hoods and such around.

In a tounament last week they were responsible for running Vulkan off the board. I'd say that they paid for themselves.

And I've seen grots beat assault terminators. Does not mean that grots are good.

Grots are awesome! The PBS has been good to me, so far. I've placed in most tournaments and was 13th out of 128 @ BoLScon.
