| QUOTE (Splinter @ Nov 2 2009, 10:19 PM) | | Certainly a nice idea and would look cool if done well enough. But it does leave you with a load of left over chimera hull and odd bits of track. |
I'm sure I can use the left over bits for bunkers and whatnot for terrain. I'm just a little unsure where to make the major cuts at. And I'm unsure if I want two sets of tracks or one giant set...

| QUOTE (Curon_Hifor @ Nov 2 2009, 06:54 PM) | | While experimenting with a few builds for my mechanised army on Army Builder, an Idea popped into my head: Why not have a mobile command headquarters vehicle? Essentially, the way I'm envisioning this, is that I would take two (or more) Chimeras and cut one's back end off and one's front end off and make a ridiculously long Chimera. I might be going the wrong route for this though. Basically, it would be a mobile command vehicle that helps support the fight of my incredibly mobile attack force. Any suggestions? |
I don't want to be a buzzkiller, but I think a Chimera is already capable of being a central command unit, without such extensive modifications. Heck, the Rhino command unit is loaded to the gills with tactical computers in its troop bay. Chimeras are around the same size of a Rhino, so I'm pretty sure it can do the same thing.
All you'd really have to do is stick on the IG comms piece, and the large Vox dish from the Apoc upgrade sprue. If it suits your fancy to model interiors, flatten out one side of the Chimera's interior and grab the computer terminals from the Land Raider and Rhino and stick them in there.

Hm, you do have a good point there. I wasn't sure if a command chimera as-is would be sufficient for a multiple-company-engagement, but I suppose you're probably right. I've never seen the apocalypse upgrade pack though...

I have a couple around here. Seems to me though that it's become right hard to find the whole sprue, but quick searches on your favorite online auction website should produce the single upgrades from it. The sprue contains a Space Marine command upgrade, which is sort of like a box with a bunch of camera lenses. It has a plug that allows it to fit into the weapon holes on the front of a Landspeeder, or it has its own little round base so that it can be stuck into any hatch found on the Rhino or Land Raider hull. The IG one is a large boxy thing with a short antenna and a large, aquila-shaped communications dish. Nothing pretty but it really adds some command flair to a Russ, Baneblade or Chimera-type. the Chaos bit sports two options. It's a frame of techno-whatzits that can either have a new demonic face put on for use with the Defiler (or just adding visual nastyness to any tank), or it can have a combi-melta plugged into it and can be stuck onto something like the Space Marine one. The Eldar bit is nothing more than a funky Eldar-made antenna. The Tau have a couple items. They seem to be extra sensor arrays that mount under the front fins of the Devilfish hulls, and another array that fits on the middle of the topside. Curon_Hifor, Go for it, makes a nice objective for different games. If all you want is a command Chimera then add the bit from the command sprue, extra antenna and a marine radar dish. Below are my command chimera and artillery command vehicle. Psy

| QUOTE (Curon_Hifor @ Nov 3 2009, 09:24 PM) | | Actually, I kinda like that idea, the Chimera dragging along a trailer behind it with extra sensor equipment and whatnot |
That would be purely in specially set up battles. No one would tow a trailer into battle, they'd be a sitting duck for AT weapons and dangerous terrain becomes even more of a threat.

| QUOTE (Semper Loyalus @ Nov 3 2009, 10:39 PM) | | In my old battalion, the HQ tracks were just basic APCs that had higher roofs (essentially granting standing room inside) and lots more antennas. Externally, those were the only significant changes. |
I was thinking the same thing. Not sure how (or why) you would make the Chimera taller than it is already, but its definately something I was thinking to play around with.
