I admit Im more of a modeller most of the time than a player, and I prefer bigger games. My local FLGS only holds tournaments on Sundays (I work Sundays, no really I work every Sunday but holidays) so my job gets in the way of me playing those games.
So I play competitively with friends as often as possible after all I don't just build and paint them to be pretty on the shelf. So I learned recently that the other FLGS is doing a league series from January through June, and my one thought was Im in. They don't have preset game days its whenever you have time and can arrange with opponent.

That being said I played a tourney this Sunday at my local FLGS. I hadn't got to play since late September with my recent move (packing unpacking arghhhh!!!)

So its a 750 pt tourney 4 games 4x4 table (I didn't know about the table size issue before hand), and required 1 hq, 2 troops, and either 1 elite, 1 fast, or 1 heavy

I took this list
Unit Type Unit Size Options Transport Transport Options
HQ Company Command Squad 5 4x Melta Guns Chimera Heavy Flamer

Troops Veterans 10 3x Melta Guns Chimera Heavy Flamer

Troops Infantry Platoon 26
Platoon Command Squad 5 4x Flamers Chimera Heavy Flamer

Infantry Squad 1 10 1x Auto Cannon
Commissar

Infantry Squad 2 10 1x Auto Cannon

HVY SPT Leman Russ Exterminator 1 Heavy Bolter
Heavy Bolter Sponson

1st game was myself against dark angels terminator wing
He had Belial, a 5 man squad of terminators with apothecary and thunder hammers and storm shields, then he had a 5 man squad of terminators with hammers and shields.

We ended on turn 5 I didn't get his objective he didn't get mine, he had one more kill point than I did, and I had almost everything left, he had Belial and the apothecary.

2nd game, I played against a guard player, he had a ccs w/ las cannon, 2 pcs w/ las cannons, 4 sqauds with meltas and missile launchers and a Leman Russ.
I killed everything but 1 pcs, one of the two blob squads, and the ccs. I lost the mission overall because I was 1" away from the objective and he got the mission point for me wrecking his russ.

3rd game Nurgle Chaos Marines player he had a 2 squads of nurgle troops in rhinos, nurgle prince, and a vindicator. I killed the 3 vehicles and 3 marines and he wiped me off the table (this is something I had never experienced).

4th game guard player he had a squadron of 3 valks (2 with pods and multi lasers, 1 with missiles and las cannon), 2 valks had melta vets inside, and 1 just had Yarrick.
I tabled him pretty easily.

Things I learned this tournament. Need more Missile Launchers or las cannons. 2 shots from and auto cannon is awesome but feel no pain is bs. I would have won my first and second hands down if it weren't for FNP saves.

So the lesson I learned with this list is replace the the squad cannons with missile launchers but I don't know where to take the points from and maybe switch the russ to a standard. Also the other change I should make is play more to the objectives less to kill the opponent.

I guess really I I didn't come with the right game face either because I just came out to scratch my 40k bug and play a few games.

You don't need more Las Cannons or Missile launchers, anything Str 8 or AP 2 will do. So, plasma guns, melta guns, or a big ole' pie plate from a plain Jane russ.

I thin you did just fine. I myself have started to play more tournaments, and with each tournament, my confidence grows. So will yours.

The answer is undoubtedly yes! I had a great time.
I really didn't have any confidence issues during the tourney. I had some learning lessons, playing the smaller game, feel no pain is hard to deal with at that point level. I should have either had more ap2, more strength 8+ or just a mess of more las guns. Where the tourney was played my buddy had a point with those people I should have taken a Demolisher and it would have resolved my problems. Sadly I was thinking I was going to be playing something like Dark Eldar more than I expected to be playing chaos or dark angels. My IG games definitely left me feeling justified the list was acceptable to units not including feel no pain spread over the entire army. In both games one more turn or (in the objective issue 1 more inch) would have made the difference for me.
