I have learned to like their tank hunting ability. IF you are fighting someone with tanks theyare great if not use the scout ones . I have seldom not gotten flank shots with my armored sentenals. So i have found them to be great.

I use both the scout and armored sentinels and they both work well haven't had to worry to much about them drawing fire until they start popping enemy transports.

I tag team them with a couple of scout sentinals.

The scouts outflank and pop rhino's and then the armored sentinals take out most of the squad with their plasma cannons. After a bunch of games it still works (takes opponents by surprise).

Desert Rat, Thats a lot of sentinals. I seem only to ever use them then I dont have enough heavy weapons in my line, or I need a plasma cannon in the line. Do you think a armourd sentinal squad or 3 do as well at tank hunting as a vanquisher or gunship?

However one lucky shot with a lascannon sentinal earns the poitns of the squadron with a fair regualarity.
It is a good point droa\p and most guard lists usualy can afford a fast attack option for them.

I've been using Armored Sentinels to tie up nasty assault units for a couple of turns. They don't have to win, just tar-pit enough so that I can deal with the rest of the army.

That is a good idea but it is a waste of Lascannon armored sentinals. The ones without lascannons work well for that

I use a pair of plasma cannon armored, and a pair of autocannon w/hk missile scouts in my army. They are fairly cheap point wise and having the scouts outflank is great.

As for "Tank" hunting, I'm guessing you mean Main Battle Tank i.e. Landraider, Leman Russ, Hammerhead. I'd say let your heavy weapon squads, melta vets, Leman Russ' do that for you.

Even though the background says they are a "tank hunter" unit, I don't believe it. I think a battle cannon will do fine or the heavy weapons with an officer nearby is a better bet. The sentinels are skirmishers that pick off stragglers, tar pits, or a secondary gun platform. The reason I like the autocannon and the plasma cannon is the poor ballistic skill of the sentinel is mitigated by the weapon.

I'll admit I had really high hopes for the Armored Sentinel. But it's been nothing but a let down. Overpriced and under armed are all I've come away with after 5 games. I suppose I should have realized the problem when an AS with missiles and an HK was as expensive as a Hydra or Griffon. But I figured the small profile and AV12 would make a difference. RoF beats thinking you can hide and rerollable large blasts beat mobility and the option to shoot a S8.

Maybe if we had more Cityfights or really large stands of trees I'd have a different opinion. But mine have gone back to patrolling the dust bunny interment camp in the basement. armata_PDT_28.gif

I have a question, how many types of Sentinels are available in 40K?, I know the classic scout and Armored, plus the airborne version with Deep Strike, but is there another version, maybe with a little more firepower.?

Before I purchased my Executioner, I ran two armored sentinels with plasma cannons in reserve. When that all-too-often deep-strike of Termies or battlesuits came in, it was usually right when my walkers made it to the field. Two pie plates later, there was no more threat.

Nowadays, I sometimes run a pair of scout sentinels with lascannons to pop the biggest, ugliest enemy vehicle they can, and then to draw fire. For 120 points, they have consistently averaged more than 250 points worth of enemy per game, not to mention the value of drawing fire from the other heavy hitters on the field.

While other units can do the job of the Sentinel better, they still fill a niche that the Guard would hate to lose.

A fellow IGer swears his Armoured Sentinels are awesome and always cause massive casualties, but there's a trick: he runs only one, armed with a plasma cannon. Thanks to this edition's scatter rules, this version, he says, does a heck of a lot more damage.

The problem with the Armored Sentinel to me is that it is Fast Attack, the slot that (after Heavy Support) is the most competitive. I'm always shunning it in favor of Scout Sentinels, Vendettas, Hellhounds, and (yes) Rough Riders. armata_PDT_23.gif

I just had couple of battles using AS with Plasma cannon and in both they performed well enough, in the first one they managed to kill a Terminator squad, that was too far behind on his own lines so that one more than earned his points.

My second battle had one of them stopping assault terminators with thunder hammers for maybe 3 turns before being destroyed, even if they scored no hits with the cannon.

I consider them useful both in an offensive and defensive role against enemies who aren't ready to shoot them with long range AT weapons, but they are no miracle workers. happy2.gif
