Six Years ago I first posted this on these forums

user posted image

Five Years ago I'd built and painted 20 guardsmen, and couldn't be bothered with them anymore

Last December after stripping my variously painted marines and re-painting them as Howling Griffons I decided to do the same with my multi-painted Guard army

A fortnight ago I finished my first troops choice

Currently I'm working on a couple of Forgeworld inspired items

Heavy Mortar battery
user posted image

The Prime reason to build these was to fill out my otherwise empty Elite slots.

(Although initially it was because the mortar shell carried by the metal Valhallan mortar team looks ridiculous next to the Cadian plastic mortars)

user posted image

I plan to use the DKOK Update rules for the Heavy Mortar, which are more in line with the 5th edition Griffon.

Technically speaking I should use the rules from IA5. But hell, I spend 5 points more for a DKOK mortar, and lose all the powerful specialist ammo in return for 'accurate bombardment'

Vanquisher turret
user posted image

Open topped tank hunter. As the army has a soviet theme this is a parallel to the lease M-10 Wolverine (ignoring the fact that the gun is a German 88).

Co-axial stubber for accuracy, sadly I will never field this except with forgeworld rules.

I'll be posting here as the army progresses, and in between times I'll pop in close-ups of my finished units with army lists.

Wow, that's about two platoons worth of men... or 50 men and 50 conscripts, plus a Company Command squad, although I don't see any platoon commands anywhere.

Also, given that you are Valhallan, those mortars fit somehow.

All in all, this is good enough to get you started on some motivation, Madbob.

By the powers invested in me, for acts of painting and modeling on the field of battle, I am proud to award you this ribbon:

1 - “You’ve Got To Start Somewhere.” ; Squad.

~ A fully modelled and painted squad has been finished , with pictures posted in the Army Blog.
~ A squad roster should be provided (but not needed for this level).
~ Bases should be finished , but are not necessary to gain this reward.

Those mortars look good.

They are quite a bit larger than a griffin, more like a medusa. If your group lets you, I'd run them as that, but either way, nicely done.

I guess you're right, they didn't seem so big while I was building them, but the option of using them as Medusas seems a good one

Hats and Ranks
user posted image
From left to right;
Conscript in forage cap, Guardsman in Shapka(closed), Guardsman in Shapka(open), officer.

Only half my army has hat conversions with the rest in cadian helmets, any new models I build will have converted hats.
I only use Conscripts in friendly games, so most of the time they'll double as normal guard.

Lasgun 500 (points)

This army is more of a exercise in army list writing and painting, though it does look impressive

Holy crap. That's a lot of straight-leg infantry in 500 points. Toss in a few plasma or melta guns to help kill bigger stuff and you'll be one scary guy. I love the hat conversions.

I love your work mate.
Could you possibly give us some close-ups on those soldiers, they look magnificent.
Oh and while we're at it i'd love some close-ups of pre-painted models because I'd love to convert meself some Valhallans armata_PDT_34.gif
I've got to admit this, I dobuted that I will ever be stunned by the usage of cadian models, but I am.
Congratulations, really great job
ps: (ok I understand if you can't give us close-ups of troopers but I beg, no I demand! that you show us those wonderful Russian hats! armata_PDT_22.gif )

Ah, there we are! Thanks for separating those units out for us. Lovely conversions as well, although the bases are bit sparse for my tastes. Add some snow covered rocks, that should do it.

However, you now qualify for the second of the painting ribbons...

2 - “Skirmish.” ; 500 Points.

A force of 500 points bas been fully modelled and painted.
The force does not need to be “legal” in game terms , but should include squad rosters to prove it is roughly 500 points.
Bases have been finished.

For a semi-competitive game I would probably drop 20 conscripts for some special weapons.

I'll be getting some greenstuff today, and I need to do some loaders for my heavy weapons teams. I'll do hats and coats as a stage-by-stage some time this weekend.

You're right about the bases, I have some slate, but I'll discuss doing it right with some Space Wolf players tonight.

Cheers,

~ Bob

I really like the way you made greatcoats out of regular troopers. Between that and the hats, you've really made the standard Cadian look awesome.

Thanks. I've now got some GS for a step-by-step this weekend, but for today;

My Heavy Mortars
user posted image
Apologies to any Russian speakers for the redundant unit designation.

Used them in a game last night, did everything I wanted from a Griffon without using up a Heavy support slot, well chuffed.

My 'not so heavy' Mortars
user posted image
I got some good basing suggestions from the guys at my club (thanks to those on this forum for suggesting it); slate, tufts and patches of gloss varnish for melting snow.

I need to do another layer of snow to tie it all together though.

Commissariat Vanquisher
user posted image
Still need to add a commissar.

The starting model was badly battered, but I can fluff that:

The 6th company of the 32nd Valhallan Armoured have a quiet contempt for commissars. The troopers endeavour to issue new commissars with Tank 603, a Vanquisher over a century old with a tendency toward fatal gun jams.

I've finished writing a tutorial on how I made my Valhallans, maybe it will eventually appear in the Tutorials section pretty soon.
