The following map represents your positions to the east of Vogen, across the Voge River. Your ultimate task is to clear the city of the horde of slavering orks that currently inhabit it. Your first task, as the portly Lord General Sans-Terriere explains to you, is: "Harrumph! Pelletier, isn't it? Yes, Colonel, you'll have to get across somehow. The bridges are all destroyed, but the Munitorum will have boats sent up to you. You'll want to do some reconnaissance first, of course. Corps artillery will be at your disposal, though they've limited ammunition." He turns to greet a tall, lank, greyish man in the uniform of the Adeptus Munitorum. "This is Magistratum Borst. He's going with you, and he'll be your liaison with my office here. You'll need to work with him on supplies, reinforcements, things like that." He waves a fleshy hand in the air, and takes another sip of his fine cognac. "You leave for the front tomorrow." The Lord General stares at you with his protruding eyes. "I can't emphasize how important it is that you get across quickly, Colonel. You're just one regiment, but we do have others coming and they'll need a bridgehead. We certainly don't want the Orks to cross on us instead; right now they're happy to loot the city, but that won't satisfy them for long!" "Any questions, Colonel?" Colonel Pelletier turns Borst. "Magistratum prepare your ships to meet my men at the northern section of the river, say...at the 30th marker. At 0800 I'd like the artillery to target Chesset Hill for at least 30 minutes or as long as their munitions hold. We need to get the men across."
Addressing his aide de camp, "Inform Tech-Priest Shia that 2nd Company vehicles need to be prepared for an Amphibious landing. We're going to cross just south of Chesset and attempt to retake the spaceport. That should be vital to getting reinforcements across and keeping the initiative. Inform 3rd that they are to take advance and clear Chesset while 2nd advances on the port."
The aide shifts his feet nervously. "Go ahead man, I didn't pick you for this job because you're meek!" the Colonel bellowed. "Sir, isn't it risky to commit entire companies like that. It'll leave of without ready reserves and the tactica recommends against it."
The Colonel Pelletier laughed. "Surely you're right about that. It's good to see you've been paying attention at briefings. It is a risk but all landings are. With luck, whoever the Warboss is over there won't expect it either and we can overcome them on the first wave. Dismissed."
Looking at the map Colonel Pelletier frowned. This could easily become a meat grinder if he let it. Plus, urban combat didn't exactly favor his rough riders. He decided quickly that 7th company would be sent over the river quickly should the beachhead be established.
Stopping his aide as he left for deliver orders, "Get 1st Co to begin marching north to find a stable crossing point. I've got a bad feeling about horses and water. They'll reinforce the regiment when they can. 5th and 6th will be tasked with holding HQ here on this bank until it can be relocated to the spaceport. Get me Master Jones at his discretion."
Being polite to the psyker mutant made his skin crawl but his divinations had saved the regiment many lives and he would need every resource to crack this nut.
"General, sir, tell me about the Warboss..."
--------------------------- Addressing the assembled men at the staging area:
"Men of Cadia, tomorrow you will bring the Emperor's judgment down upon the xeno Ork. They are a crude, barbaric people, as you all have seen. They ravaged our home and now they ravage this world. A world that belongs to the Emperor!"
--Pause for Applause--
"Now bear in mind, the enemy is tenacious. It isn't going to lay down and give us our rightful victory...AND NOR SHOULD IT! We are all Cadians, regardless of your planet of birth. Born with a gutfull of fire and any enemy that would quit isn't worthy of our attention. Now currently we are the only force in the warzone. Men...THIS IS A GREAT HONOR!"
--Pause for Applause--
"We will crack this tough nut open and form the beachhead so that other, less blessed regiments, can join us in that poor city."
--Points dramatically across the river--
"That beachhead will be consecrated in Cadian blood, blessed in the eyes of the Emperor and by that blessing this conquest will begin. All your officers have received their orders. Do your duty and I'll see you at mess afterward.
Do not double-post. - Sigma

Day One, 0800: Your speech goes over well, though a few of the officers, including your ADC, look mildly concerned. As the first Basilisk shells pass overhead to impact on Gibbet Hill (it would appear your map was wrong) there is a faint cheer from the men of 2nd and 3rd Companies massing for the attack. Gibbet Hill for half an hour looks like a volcano, pieces of masonry crumbling from the side of the ancient prison on its top and dust rising high into the air. As the firing dies away, the Chimeras lurch into the river and 3rd Company rush to the river's edge with their assault boats (The Munitorum has seen fit to provide you with enough for one company). Both companies get across in good order, the orks seeming temporarily stunned by the bombardment, but... Day One, 1200: ... after four hours, it's clear taking Vogen from Orks is something like trying to invade the nest of a rabid mustelid. 2nd Company are doing fine, their Chimerae spreading out across the strand. Even slowing to kill roving bands of orks, their spearpoint is nearly at the Spaceport. 3rd Company isn't so lucky. They hit the slopes of Gibbet Hill only to discover that the orks have been fortifying it; not to mention that getting into a prison is about as difficult as getting out. As the Cadians climb the slopes, the orks pop out of their holes and rush down, yelling like mad and smashing into 3rd Company like a wave of choppas, and in fact, cutting the company in two. The Cadians grind steadily forward, but the Captain reports 20% casualties and estimates he is facing at least a thousand orks. Jack Jones finally finishes his divinations and announces, "Answer cloudy, ask again later." This post has been edited by JenBurdoo on Apr 18 2012, 11:45 PM

The news was certainly grim. If 3rd remained divided they would be destroyed piecemeal but retreat so early certainly wasn't an option. By now the Orks would certainly have their blood up and perhaps that would be the key. Sherman, he called, seeking his personal vox opperator, get me Lieutenant Dan on the end immediately then seek out whoever is in charge of the remaining elements of 3rd (who knows how well the chain of command survived.) It took time, too much precious time, but eventually Lt. Dan (Commanding Officer of 2nd Company) answered. "With all due respect sir, I'm kinda busy killing Orks at the moment." The hum of Multi-laser fire filled the background. The Colonel was certain Dan had said something inappropriate at the end of that but the roar of what could only be a heavy flamer cut him off. "New orders Lieutenant. 3rd is getting cut to pieces. Move your advance northwards to the bridge connecting the spaceport to Ches...Gibbet Island (damnable maps.) Send half the company to open a second front across the bridge while the other elements move to recon the spaceport. Well have to hold off taking that place until the island is secure." There was a long pause. Dan never did like changes to the plan. "Sir, yes sir!" Things must have been going especially poor on Gibbet. The best that could be raised were two sergeants, thankfully in both segments of the fighting. Both were informed that they needed to hold their line until the 7th could get across and establish a firing line behind them. They promised to spread the word... Triple rations of mastla were offered to help motivate the men but Pelletier doubted it would matter much. If only they could hold out just long enough.

Day 1, 2000 hours Lt. Dan and half his platoons discover within short order that there is no bridge left between Gibbet Hill and the spaceport. He elects to swim the channel again. One Chimera is bitten in half by a squig-shark and all the men lost, but the others cross safely and disembark on the beaches. The slopes are too rocky for the Chimeras to drive up, but blistering fire from their guns plasters the orks as the Guardsmen push south and west. In short order, with their help, the 3rd Company stabilizes its positions, but has taken well over 30% casualties. The Captain of 3rd Company is located, having holed up in an ork dugout with his command squad and dismembered all the nearby orks with his chainsword. While relieved to take control of his company once more, he reports that the island will be harder to take than it looks. Over the crackle of lasfire and the krump of stikkbombs, he comms you. "The orks are in the prison, Sir, recommend we leave 'em there?" The afternoon winds down and Lt. Dan takes over part of the line, freeing 3rd Company men to take the boats back across and start ferrying over the 7th Company. Due to the heavy loads of bolters, lascannons and ammunition, fewer men can be carried and despite strenuous effort, only half the company is across by nightfall. The orks are sitting tight in the prison and violently resisting all attempts to get in. The other half of 2nd Company has had an easier time of it, their armoured tracks and firepower having seen off the few thrusts that the orks have thrown at them. They are at the edge of the airfield, and report that it looks deserted except for some grots scuttling about in the distance, among the wreckage of Imperial aircraft that lies strewn over the tarmac. They also hold a strip of the river side. While no major attacks have been mounted from the habs that tower over the strand, sniping is increasing. At this point you are informed that a second regiment will join you on this front, arriving at midnight.

Colonel Pelletier sighed, this was getting almost tragic. At best it would be a costly and minor victory. At worst, he'd consigned one of his companies to destruction. He went to the corner and started to don his cloak.
"Sir, what are you doing?" his aide asked him.
"Getting ready to go to the front, what does it look like?" he responded, fastening his chainsword to his hip. "Get me Comissar Levelin, he'll be commanding the Ogryn, and inform my banner bearer that I'm taking the field personally. Piece of advice should you ever get command lad. Never ask you men to do something you aren't willing to do yourself."
He paused. The room had gone quiet. He rarely took the field personally these days. It just wasn't his style. Time to remind them all what planet he came from.
The Ogryn in the corner of the room had been silent, so silent that most had even forgotten he was there, despite his great size, until the Colonel addressed him. "Molok by faithful bodyguard. Lets remind them what kind of servants of the Emperor we are."
The Ogryn, despite the best attempts by the regimental medicae to augment him still looked a bit vapid but that never diminished his enthusiasm. "Ugh, big damn heroes?"
"That's right, big damn heroes."
Hopefully this silly prison wouldn't be one of the times when heroics just meant good men dying.

"Twelve hours behind schedule." Captain Ialerum said as he led his company in the column. The road march from the staging area left their boots muddy and their uniforms dirtied. The city loomed over them and the faint rushing of water could be heard over the snaps, whistles and cracks of gunfire.
Ialerum's company First Sergeant simply nodded. The company marched on, knowing full-well they could have made this mind-numbing journey on Valkyries instead of boots.
------
Colonel Broadus was the first man in the line. It was more a matter of symbolism and pride than status; Col B led his men in every sense of the word and it would be an insult to ride in a Salamander while his men march.
The regimental headquarters company marched up to Harrikon's gate and its flanking fortifications. Broadus pointed to the tower on the right and signaled his XO. LtCol Maheolas was at his side in seconds.
"The greenskins didn't bother to hole up in here, it seems." Broadus said, "I want a temporary command post set up in a sub-terranean level until we get into the city. As each company arrives, have them moved off the highway to the northern side and give priority to the chimerae. Until a bridge is built, we'll have to ferry the men on 'phibs and whatever else the 333rd Cadian have set up."
"It doesn't look like they have gotten very far."
"No, but they made the right choice by going for the spaceport first. Any supply route is useful. Also, get the S3 and our Navy liaison. I need to know if we have any aircraft or artillery to help us out."
"Yes, sir." Maheolas turned and walked towards the headquarters company.
Broadus yelled back, "Sergeant Major!"
RSM Reese sprinted up to the colonel, "Yes, sir?"
"I want our companies to move off the road to the north when they get up here. Facilitate this and keep our men from mixing with the 333rd. Keep them on their toes; we might start crossing the river as soon as our chimerae get up here."
"Yes, sir. Anything else?"
"Yes, get me the S6." Less than a minute later, the regimental communications officer was at the colonel's side. The regimental bodyguard unit began clearing out the fortification and the rest of the headquarters unit began coordinating the setup. Portable antenna towers were being erected and equipment unloaded.
"First things first, get me comms with the 33rd. I need to know what they need. Second, get a repeater set up so that our voxes can communicate between companies if we get spread out."
The S6 smiled, "Already being done, sir. The regimental call sign system is serpents, sir."
Broadus smiled, "And what is my call sign?"
"The regimental command element is Bushmaster, sir."
"I like it. Feed the rest of the call signs to my dataslate and carry out your orders, captain."
The S6 nodded and returned to his work. Broadus returned to the road as B company arrived, marching in perfect columns. The company commander gave a nod to the colonel in place of a salute as they passed.
It will take a while to set up thought Broadus. He opened a map on his dataslate and began repeating his study of the task again. Glancing between the ground and the city, he began connecting features with the map. The echoing gunfire seemed to punctuate his thoughts: this city would be a tough nut to crack.

The aide shifted nervously from foot to foot. He didn't know what the Colonel saw in him. He was far to craven to make an effective officer but he kept giving him such important assignments.
"Ah well, may as get this over with," he though as he taped the Colonel on his shoulder, throwing what would have had to have been his most crisp salute in his life as he turn.
"Sir, Sergeant Hunter. Colonel Pelletier has left for Gibbet. It appears I've been assigned to be your liaison with the Half-Da...the...333rd sir," he blurted out rapidly, thrusting out a letter ahead of him.
-------Contents of the Letter-------- To the Honorable Colonel of the 74th Euanthe, Would that I could have meet you in person to welcome you to the warzone but events on Gibbet Island have demanded my personal attention. By the time you would have gotten this letter I will be en route to the island with my personal guard. My aide, a Sergeant Hunter, will be your liaison with my men. My regiments call sign will be Cavalier, with my personal one being Paladin.
The Euanthe regiments have a well deserved reputation in this segmentum so I'm confident in my trust of leaving central command in your hands. I would, however, advise you to move in support of my mechanized forces in taking the spaceport. Gibbet is contained at the moment and I'll see that it stays that way until we have the manpower or equipment to take it. No doubt you don't need reminded that we need to capture that 'port before the orks can build momentum to oppose us.
The Emperor's Honorable Servant, Colonel Kristof Pelletier, 333rd Cadian
-Diligence is the mother of achievement

Day Two, 0800: Colonel Pelletier moves to Gibbet Hill with his command squad and bodyguard. At the head of 2nd Company, he personally attacks through the cells and galleries of the prison. The Orks scream wildly and blasts of fire flash in the shadows as 2nd Company, inspired, gets its second wind. Molok the Ogryn, bellowing like a bear, smashes Ork skulls left and right, notwithstanding the few bloody slashes the orks get in on him. Pelletier hacks tirelessly with his powersword, his cloak whipping as he cuts and thrusts. Unnoticed, his command squad guard his back. The Regimental standard falls three times, each time raised again by a willing hand. Steadily, the orks are driven back. Until a hulking Boss in mega armour powers his way through the milling throng. He cuts loose with his big shoota, the juddering cannon cutting down the survivors of the Colonel's HQ. He howls at Pelletier, a clear challenge! ******** Broadus sets up his HQ in good order in the abandoned Harrikon's Gate. The cool, wide galleries are the perfect spot. About him aides and staff officers rush to and fro. The hospital is also neatly laid out nearby, ready for business. And business it is about to get. First Battalion crosses in good order, with Second prepping behind them. And then the sun rises. And the guns of the North Fort open up. The orks are clearly enthusiastic about their work. Within minutes the advance guards of both battalions are furiously digging in on the increasingly cratered strand. Lieutenant Colonel Emil Engel peered thought the binos mounted on the rear of the Salamander Command vehicle. There was still smoke rising from Gibbet hill , scared as it was from the artillery bombardment. Further to the south heavy and medium guns could bee seen firing at the leading elements of the 74th. The sound of the guns echoed to his ears a few seconds after each flash from their muzzles. "I'm gad we're not in that mess." he nodded. Captain Harpe , the regimental supply officer nodded. "Ja , they'll have a hard time.""This river's ruining us , no one can bring their full weight to bare. So the 12th will fix this problem for our bloodied allies."The Colonel prodded the map in front of him. "Wulff , get your 9th , and Eggers 10th and start building me a bridge here."He jabbed again at the map , pointing to the middle of Gibbet Hill "I'll leave the exact location to you , you're the eyes on the ground. The Baily Bridge sections we have should do the job.""Captain Lenk , Schwarts , Deglow , build me a ferry system to Gibbet. , each one large enough to take a sentinel or light vehicle. Use anything you can find , get me as many as you can. Set up south of the 9th company."With a wave of his hand his Engineer-Officers set about their tasks , leaving only his Grenadier-Captains and staff officers. "Harpe , I hear there's an Adeptus Munitorum official somewhere around here , and i hear there are boats. Get me enough for a company , I want the 5th to cross to Gibbet as soon as possible and burn those orks out with their flamers."***************************************************** Letter one. Th C.O penned a letter to his opposite fighting on Gibbet. It was short and curt as was his style. Why waste time with pleasantries. To : Colonel Pelletier , C.O 333rd. From : Lieutenant Colonel Emil Engel , C.O. 12th Krieg Sappers.

Anything else you require ? Message End.****************************************************** Order breakdown :* 9th and 10th companies to start work on bridge. "Dammit, colonel! Second landed two hundred meters too far south! Tell Second to get his act together!" Col Broadus roared at Maheolas.
The big general strode about the rough terrain around Harrikon's Gate. He marched back to the edge of the river, seemingly oblivious to the stray shots whistling past. Second Battalion was pinned down on the beach, barely moved from where they had been dropped.
First had made some headway up the river but were under the same withering fire. This battalion was accompanied by the Chimera transports that had ferried them across and these vehicles began dumping withering fire on the enemy fortifications. The units began advancing north again under this covering fire. That colonel has his wits about him.
"Ok," the colonel said to his XO, "Second battalion needs support. I want our sentinel units up on this river side and give some covering fire where they can. Have the lascannons fire on the heavier weapons and keep the multilasers for suppression of the lighter guns. Have Fourth battalion bring up their mortar teams and start dropping rounds on those high walls. Anything you can get to pin down those greenskins, do it. Then get Second moving back north to consolidate with the 333rd. Better yet, have Lima ferry the rest of Second straight into the rearguard of First Battalion. Parakleitos knows what he's doing!" Unlike this other colonel, Broadus didn't say.
The colonel turned away from the city and marched back towards his command post, the Regimental Standard flying high above its battlements. Entering the building, his men were furiously working to get a temporary headquarters established. Maheolas immediately went to the array of communications operators and began relaying the orders. Colonel Broadus went over to a large table that was quickly becoming a map reference table. He called his S5 over.
"Major, I want you to develop a plan to attack the city through this rail junction. It won't be for a while yet, so take your time." He dismissed the officer and strode to the communications sets.
"New Regiment arriving from the East, sir. 12th Krieg Sappers," one vox operator reported to the S6.
Leaning over a vox operator, Broadus said, "Get me the SOC detachment on the radio. I need his snipers." The operator nodded and tuned his vox.
As Broadus turned and walked back to the map table, he could hear the operator's fading voice say, "Lancehead, this is Bushmaster..."
****************************************** Order Breakdown (OOC: this is a good idea, Isaak)
1) First Battalion keeps advancing north under covering fire from their Chimera transports (K company) to eventually link up with the 333rd making the advance north.
2) Sentinels from Oscar company along with mortar teams from Fourth Battalion move to the riverside to provide covering fire over Second Battalion. Second Battalion will attempt to use this covering fire to move north and consolidate with the other units of the 333rd and otherwise provide a south-facing guard while the raid on the spaceport is carried out. Any remaining parts of Second that have not been ferried across yet will be carried to where First is currently located.
3) The SOC will send up Team 3 to eventually distribute some of the snipers and further suppress the orks until units are in better positions.
4) The Plans officer (S5) has begun figuring out a way to get into the city via the rail terminus if and when the city proper is breached.
5) Other battalions remain in place, relatively safe from harm at the moment.

The grumble of engines was accompanied by the rhythmic sound of almost 8000 booted feet marching in unison. Colonel Mag Novus was at the head of the long column, his command squad arrayed behind him, the steady beat of his squads drummer was joined by ten others setting the pace, scores of standards snapped in the breeze, marking the companies and platoons of the regiment. Other standards joined them, honour pendants and victory flags stood beside the great regimental standard of the 13th Terrakan Infantry Regiment, the so called “Battle Dogs”.
Up ahead the great walls of the city of Vogen stood against the horizon, the booming of heavy guns and the crack of small arms drifted over the column as the battle for the city raged. The column came to a halt in the shadow of the Harrikon’s Gate, Colonel Novus took in his surroundings with a slow methodical gaze. “Lieutenant Colonel Drays!” the officer in question stepped out of his place in the line and double-timed it to the Colonel’s side, he snapped to attention and threw a text book salute “sir!” “looks like the 74th has set up a command post in one of the gate towers.” Gesturing to the right tower, the 74th’s standard waving in the breeze at it peak. “have our command post set up in the second tower, I want an observation post set up on the roof. Take 6th company, get them to clear the tower and set up a defensive perimeter around the bridge head, tower and surrounding area. I don’t want any greenskins getting across the river.” Drays had his vox officer call up Major Reening of 6th company, he relayed his orders and sent the man off.
Colonel Novus consulted his data slate, calling up a map of the area, he highlighted areas on the map with a stylus and began pointing out locations. “Get 9th company to reinforce the 74th’s field hospital and survey that bridge into the city, if we can get it patched up again, we should be able to open up a real beachhead,. Have our own medical teams set up alongside the 74th, get them to play nice I want a happy working relationship with our brothers in this war. Have the 3rd through 8th set up a staging area here.” he tapped the area across the road from the 74th’s field hospital. “we may be out here for some time and I want our boys well rested for when their time comes on the line.” Drays nodded and turned to his vox officer passing on the orders. The shouts of men and the roar of engines soon drowned out the battle as the 13th began dispersing as ordered, only the 1st, 2nd and 10th companies remained on the road
Colonel Novus turned to his own vox officer and handed him a group of transcriptions “get these to the commanding officers of the 74th, and 333rd “
Message 1: To: Colonel Cordozar Broadus, C.O. 74th Euanthe From: Colonel Mag Novus, C.O. 13th Terrakan
Colonel, the 13th Terrakan has deployed to your south, I have engineers fortifying and reinforcing your field hospital and have sent my own medical teams to assist, suggest full integration of our resources. 13th CP will be located in southern gatehouse tower with a covering force dug in around.
Please inform of current enemy strength and any aid we can offer.
End message.
Message 2: To: Colonel Pelletier, C.O. 333rd Cadian From: Colonel Mag Novus, C.O. 13th Terrakan
Colonel, 13th Terrakan has deployed to the south of Harrikon’s Gate, have three companies, (two line, one engineering) moving north to assist with capture of Gibbet Hill, and space port, please advise on deployment locations and enemy strength.
End message
Colonel Novus turned to Captain Novak Taal and smiled “get me Majors Gordon, Creskin and Trayjen.” The burly Captain nodded and turned to the assembled column on the road, his unaided voice boomed over the background din and soon all three men were standing in front of the Colonel “gentlemen, this is Vogen, one of the Emperors cities, it has been taken by the greenskin menace. We are here to make them pay for that mistake, and take it back, in the Emperor’s name. This is what we do gentlemen, this is what we are known for, let’s show them the error of their ways.” The three men smiled and nodded, voicing their affirmations. “your companies are to accompany me north to the 12th Krieg’s command post opposite Gibbet Hill, we will attempt a landing either in support of the 333rd already engaged there or to open up a second front. Major Trayjen, I want you to see if the Kreigers need help establishing some kind of crossing point, if not you will rejoin us and help crack this nut. Questions?” there were none, Colonel Novus nodded and headed north, his command squad following, the three majors returned to their respective companies and followed close behind.
***********************************************************
Order breakdown: (OOC: I shall also keep with this idea, keeps it neat and easy for the GM to keep track)
1: Regimental HQ to take south tower of Harrikon’s Gate
2: 6th company to form defensive line from 74th’s HQ to base of map
3: 9th company to reinforce field hospital and survey bridge
