The Vultures are a 11th founding chapter of unknown origins. It is only known that they were founded off the Scarillian Guard, themselves founded after the Iron Angels split in three to more easily defend the Remulus sector. Where the Iron Angels come from, all knowledge is lost.
The Vultures Chapter first appeared in 384.M39 and chose the Solar system of Cathartidae as their homeworld. Before the founding of the Vultures, the solar system was unknown of content, only mapped as B45-33819G and brushed off as unimportant. After a scouting mission to secure the sector for the God-Emperor and Mankind, it was learned that the entire system was untouched and that four of the nine planets had breathable atmosphere! A fantastic find for the Imperium. This also meant that the importance of the system required an immense fleet of starships to defend the sector.
Choosing the fifth planet as their homeworld, a planet shielded by an asteroid blanket, Chapter Master Josephus Laurentius named it Atratus, and founded the fortress-monastery of The Vulture's Grasp on a large peninsula near the equator.
Placed near one of the borders of the sector, the Vultures are often attacked by Waaaghs, sometimes several at a time, but the most common, stubborn and most eager to return is that of Warboss Greznog-Muk-Razza.
A couple of Craftworlds have moved past a few times, but have never attacked. However, an emissary was once let through the fleet, and granted permission to land on Atratus to speak with Chapter Master Laurentius. The encounter ended on friendly terms, both parties agreeing to aid eachother when Hive Fleet Myrmidon would arrive sometime in the future. Near or far, the emissary wouldn't say.
Currently in the 41st Millenium the Vultures are fighting Waaagh Greznog and his Blud Skullz, and have also recently encountered the xenos Tau. An emissary was also sent here, asking kindly for the Space Marines to let the Tau have this system in the name of the Greater Good. If not, the warriors of Mankind would suffer the wrath of the Greater Good. The Tau Space Fleet was blasted into oblivion, hunted down to the last fighter.
Doctrine:
The Vultures do not follow the Codex Astartes. Chapter Master Laurentius made a significant change in the distibution of the Marines in his Chapter. While still maintaining the First Company as a veteran company, all other companies have two five-man squads of Terminators. The Tenth company is not a Scout company, it is the same as the other battle companies, distributing the scouts within every company (except the first) as two five-man scout squads.
However, apart from this, the Captains may distribute their other forces as they will.
Most Codex chapters getting their hands on this knowledge find it blasphemic, but those who have fought alongside them, such as the Hawk Lords, Iron Hands, Mentors and even the Ultramarines, can't argue with the end result; Victory in the name of the Imperium.
Favoring particularly to mow the enemy down in brute force, the Vultures like to attack fast and heavy, a mix of Space Wolf warfare, siege warfare like the traitorous Iron Warriors (in which they get quite some critique) and Raven Guard and White Scars hit-and-run. The Vultures favour large weapons, and have made their own Forge World, spewing out Super-Heavy Tanks to match their needs.
Chapter Structure:
Chapter Master Aegimus Hugo; 4th Chapter Master, he is a Veteran of countless ork wars. He also served as a Sergeant in a Deathwatch Kill Team, sent to destroy a Chaos contingent skimming the outskirts of the Remulus Sector. Very fond of massive firepower, he is often seen fighting alongside a Devastator Squad, or leading a siege from a Stormblade.
Chief Librarian Mirus Damonon- Served in the same Deathwatch Kill Team as Hugo, and was where he first learned of his psychic abilities.
Only a Battle-Brother then, he was later sent to the Inquisiton to see if he was tainted by Chaos. Returning to the Chapter merely a month later, it was proven he had great qualities in reading the warp, and was sent to study with the Librarius.
Very outgoing and very interactive with his Battle-Brothers, he often tells tales during the Chapter Meadfest, holds any kind of speech, and is very often seen pulling pranks on the Chapter Master.
High Chaplain Kelessa Cassus is perhaps the most serious man in the Chapter, always chanting and blessing his surroundings and Battle-Brothers.
Often he is seen leaving the Meadfest after only one or two drinks, usually when the mood gets too high. It is ofcourse common knowledge that Cassus enjoys himself the most on the battlefield, spilling the blood of his enemies, purging the xenos and heretic.
Companies:
First Company - Veteran Company. Led by Captain Raulph Tasarhai. Whenever the Chapter Master fights, the First act as Bodyguard.
Captain Tasarhai is one of only two Captains allowed to speak their minds freely in front of the Chapter Master.
Second Company- Battle Company. Led by Captain Oren Tevelius. Consisting of more Assault Squads than any other company, the Second is used for infiltration and night-time operations. Just like the Raven Guard, the Second is gone before it is seen.
Third Company - Battle Company. Led by Captain Darius Calixto. Due to Calixto's personal training of his Tactical Marines, the Third is always first after the Chapter Master during wall breach.
Fourth Company- Armoured Company. Led by Chaplain Janac Ambrosius, following the late Captain Rhimok Narralus. Consisting only of tanks, the Fourth also provides transport for wounded.
Fifth Company- Battle Company- Led by Captain Ephren Laumacsos. The most renowned company of the Vultures, it is the company which has spent the least time with the chapter, always out fighting on whatever task has been given to them. When the Fifth however is with the Chapter, a second Meadfest is arranged so stories can be told and cross-chapter comraderie can be maintained.
As Cpt. Laumacsos is Master of the Fleet, he also boasts the heaviest armoured firepower, apart from the Fourth.
His flagship, Wrath of the Vulture, always has a handful of Stormblades in the hangar bays, ready for war.
Sixth Company - Aerial Company- Led by Captain Julius Vrynne. Consisting of Thunderhawks, Stormravens and Stormtalons, the Sixth has fought alongside the Hawk Lords, using their knowledge to provide better aerial support for the Chapter.
Seventh Company - Battle Company- Led by Captain Leonardus Asmodai. Asmodai being born near the volcanoes on Atratus, the Seventh bolsters the highest quantity of flamer weapons in the Chapter, esquewing the plasma weapons Chapter Master Hugo prefers. No one gives them hassle about it.
The Seventh is always easy to spot on the battlefield, surrounded by their burning foes.
Eight Company - Armoured Company. Led by Captain Kalos Yussuf. Bolstering an armoured arsenal of Vindicators, Whirlwinds, Macharius HTs, Stormblades, Stormswords, Shadowswords, Praetor AAL's and Malcador Defenders, the Eight is given command whenever a siege is innevitable.
Ninth Company - Battle Company/Reserve. Led by Captain Barrus Mocul, the youngest captain in the Chapter. The Ninth, though primarily it's own Battle Company, sends it's Marines to fill in gaps in the Tactical rank of other companies. Captain Mocul and his company has earned much renown fighting in tight quarters.
Tenth Company - Battle Company/Reserve. Led by Captain Targon Varlin. Much like the Ninth company, only the Tenth consists of Assault Marines and Devastators. Captain Varlin is one of the oldest, and is the other Captain who has earned the respect to speak his mind freely in front of the Chapter Master.
