what is this, abow forum with not info on bowmakeing! well this is a mockery, i guess ill step up to the plate and take one for the team.
ok so you wanna make your own bow? well too bad find another forum i won't help, lol just kidding heres how to make a simple, ben in the handle longbow froma lumberyard board. god here comes alot of typeing! ok, go to the nearest lumberyard and look thru the species they have, your looking for a hardwood, in order of prefrence hickory, white oak, maple, ash and red oak. look for one that is a 1x2 and 6 ft long, this is actually alittle over 1 1/2 x3/4, then cheak the grain, it should have the grain running in parallel ines, parallel to the board's edges on all for large sides, the ends do not matter. also look for no warping, dents, cheaking, splintering, rott, overly dry, knotts, powder and other defects. you may find 1 out of 20 sutible for a bow. ok get it home and mark a perpendicular line at the exact center of the board, on one of the wide sides, now mesure 1 foot off eatch end and make a perpendicular line, the bow will remain full width of the board for this middle section of 2 feet. next draw a center ling going from one end of the board to the other, on the ends of the board, from the center line make a 1/4 mark on eatch side, this makes a 1/2 thick tip of the bow, not with along ruler conect theese marks, with the edge of the board at the 1 ft from middle mark.this willb e the front profile of the bow, the side you make the layout on wil be the back, this is the part that faces away from the archer.for a diagram of this desighn, cheak out my wwebsite www.freewebs.com/traditionalbows , now cut this shape out with a saw, hatchet, rasp, blockplane, machete, large citchen knife, ect. now to cut the thickness taper. find the middle of the bow again, and mark it on the thin side, now, mesure up from the back of the bow 1/2 at both tips, now draw a strait line from the ege of the bow opposite the back, from the midlle mark to this 1/2 tips,on both ends. cut this out with a blockplane, machety, large kitchen knife ect.. sight down the bow looking for lumps in this taper and fix where needed.this should get the bow to flex when pressure is applied to the handle with one tip on the floor the other in your hand at your head. now the reall bowmakeing begins, yay, cut side nocks onto the bow, 3/4 from each tip. and put ona string that is long enugh that the bow does not need to be bent when putting it on. ok now flex the bow about 3-4 inches on a tillering board, look for stiff arias and weak spots and smoth these out. now take off 30 strokes witha rasp evenly off both limbs and pull another 2 inches, cheak the shape of the arc, and fix any problems. continue this till the bow can be strung witha brace height of 6 icnhes.now again even tiller. time to drop the weight and wrok it in:) ! pull the bow to 1/2 the desired draw weight afew times, and cheak and fix tiller if needed., then pull to full drw weight, this will ocure at a low draw lenggth, say 10-15 inches. now remove wood evenly from both limbs and pull to full draw weight 10-20 times, cheak and repair tiler if needed. now it will pull about 15-20 inches at desired weight. continue this possece untill you arive within 1 inch of your final drw length, now, shoot the bow say 50 times at half draw, and cheak tiller, then 50 times at full draw and cheak and fix any tiller problems. now sand the bow, and apply a water proof finish, add a nice leatehr handgripp if you wish. if you have any questions ask! |
