HI Emil, Several of us are tracking all DJ3A Jeeps that we can find in order to establish survivors no matter their condition. We are working on a Production Chart. Please provide any info you can about your unit to: glenns@tdstelme.net We are especially looking for original colors, equipment such as top type, tailgate or not, and door opening type. VIN numbers will be either 56337-xxxxx or if built somewhere in 1964 the VIN will be 8200 (or 8201, 8202, 8203, 8204, or 8205) and a 5 number production sequence probably above 23841. We will be happy to share our research to date with any enthusiasts, but please understand that Willys Production details are not to be set in stone especially in the 60's. We are looking for any DJ3A units titled as 1965. A unit titled a particular year may very well have been built a year or even two previously. Glenn Byron

Hi Emil-
Regarding your questions about Surrey versus Gala, I sent an in depth email to you with information that you may find helpful. As Glenn stated, he and I are trying to compile a list of serial numbers for the DJ3A series of vehicles to include the Surreys and Galas. The list is far from complete and is being updated as we come across DJ3A serial numbers. I have copies of letters from Willys Motors dated Sept. 29, 1959 regarding the introduction of the Surrey and an undated letter from Willys-Overland Export corporation describing the Galas which were intended for sale outside the USA. That letter references the introduction of the Surreys in the USA, so it came after the September 29, 1959 letter from Willys Motors. The letter on the Surreys indicates Surreys were sold inside the continental limits of the USA. Both letters describe the vehicles identically, so the only difference I can see is that Galas were for export outside the US and Surreys were for sale inside the US. We are constantly learning more about Willys Motors and Willys Export Corporation and we find that with Willys et al, nothing can be set in concrete!
If anyone has a DJ3A and wishes to have the serial number and description added to our database, please send it to either myself at colins60vette@cox.net or to Glenn Byron at the email address on his Sept. 17, 2010 post.
Thanks,
Colin

Hi Emil, Your Surrey, SN 56337-16476, was built late in the 1959 Model Run as VIN #'s went from 56337-14694 to 56337-16642. So yours is the 1782'd of 1948 built. This includes all DJ3A production in 1959 and does not tell us how many were Surrey Models, just that yours was 166 from the end of the run. Being that it was built late in the run, it was more than likely titled and sold as a 1960 Model. We are learning as we go along here. All information we have is subject to revision as examples and facts surface. Willys evidentally did some pretty slipery things relating to Serial Numbers. No matter how rough your Surrey is, it is a very scarce item and every effort should be made to save it. I haven't solved that engine # yet. Stay tuned. Glenn
