Title: 12 V Generator
Description: conversion

I ran into a load of jeep parts a couple weeks ago, one of the things in the bunch was a 12 V. generator. I currently have a 12v alternator, 1 wire. I was thinking of switching back to the generator. I have a mount also. What would be involved in this? I know I'll need a regulator at least.

Basically you install a standard generator to the correct brackets.
I suggest that you first identify the generator.
Autolite or Delco Remy ? What's the model number ?

The generator needs an appropriate regulator.
The remainder of the installation is the wiring harness.
The specific wiring harness depends upon your instrumentation. (early individual or late cluster)

Once correctly installed and wired the generator will need to be polarized.
The polarizeation is a very simple procedure.
The exact procedure being dependant upon the internal wiring design of the generator being installed.

Bob,

I just got done installing and wiring mine from scratch or from a box of parts.
Here's the wiring harness info from old time and the Vernco link helped me a lot.
If your generator has been sitting a while it will probably have to be polarlized or excited. All pretty straight forward.

The complete CJ-3B wiring harrness consists of 6 parts.

1) The fuel sending wire
2) The generator harness
3) The taillamp harness
4) The headlamp harness
5) The ignition harness (right firewall)
6) The main lighting harness (left firewall)

Other than the single wire used for the tank sending the generator harness is the simplest wiring harnes on a CJ.

THE GENERATOR HARNESS

COLOR/////////GAUGE////LENGTH//////ROUTING
RED................. 10............20"............from generator armeture (largest post) to regulator "ARM"
BLUE ...............13............18-1/2".....from generator ground to regulator ground
LIGHT GREEN .13............17"............from generator field terminal to regulator "FLD".

This 3 wire harness is tape wrapped for 10" at it's middle.

Ok I'm getting tired of charging my battery every couple of weeks and I mounted my winch this past weekend to get it off the floor. So I need to get the generator going.

Oldtime this is great information, but which wire goes to the battery?

I guess I need to know how many wires leave the regulator and where do they go?

Thanks.

Found some diagrams, looks like there's just the one wire going from the regulator to the ammeter and then to the battery.

Another small success! I got the generator wired correctly after some study realized it needed to be polarized after setting for at least 3 years probably longer.

The regulator and generator seem to be working properly, putting out 14.5 volts at slightly elevated idle.

The Vernco link was very helpful. http://www.vernco.com/Sparks/id569.htm

Thank again.
