Title: Off topic but related to willys trailer
Description: need info on 1953 dapple------- trailer

Ian's AC 3b - August 18, 2012 04:31 AM (GMT)
Well, I picked up another project yesterday. Its a 1953 bantam style trailer but the data plates say it was made by some dapple -------- manufacturing in 1953. I would like to find some more info and pics on these trailers. it looks exactly like a bantam/m100 trailer with side hooks and drain plugs and shock absorbers and same wheel hub pattern as our 3b's . Anyone know anything more?
Of course it will be needing lots of TLC on the box but its solid looking for something off an old farm. ;)

Ian,
There's a deep pool of knowledge about military trailers on g503.

Look here as a quick start.

It sounds almost like a M100 trailer.

Any pictures yet?

Ian,

U.S. military trailers were (and still are today as are the many specialty vehicles) manufactured by various contractors, not a single contractor, all however under an identical design so that parts are interchangable in the field, thus the trailer you've purchased could very well have been made by one of such vendors.

:) Thanks for the replies guys! I knew about the link from the website over to the jeep trailer spotters guide . Just got the trailer home tonight and let me say it handles the road nicely for even being in its rough condition, will need work and will start with balancing the 16 wheels right after saying a thank you prayer for getting me home safe after a detailed inspection underneath revealed the centre portion of theleft towbar c channel was erroded. . The true manufacturers name is dunbar kapple and delivery was in 53. More information yet to be dug out from under the overspray paint on the data plate. First job tommorrow will be photos and measurements and then off to get some fenders on sale at nearest princessauto ( the CDN version of harborfreight) and seek out a gateleg trailer jack from nearby surplus dealer or a modern crank up version.

You can download TM 9-2330-201-14 , manual for the M100 trailer.

Ian,

You may want to contact Marcus over at Willys Acres in Oro Station, ON as he may very well have some original parts for your M100 trailer, perhaps even the landing leg assy. His # is 705 835-5739; website is www.willysacres.com and his e-mail is willysacres@look.ca

The last time I needed an original landing leg casting for an M1060 I was working on at the time, he had it. Also, any of the MD Juan distributors (Willys Acres is one I believe) in N. America should have all or just about every reproduction piece of the trailer available for purchase, including repro tounge "C" channels.

Larry and Don,
I know Marcus well and I know he probably has the parts, but a couple years ago when i started my retoration, I dropped in on him to do business in person. well after a little chit chat and he learnt that i have a 3b , his attitude changed to sell it, the 3b is no good and go find a M38. This needless to say ruined my experience and his chance of earning a good sale that day. I have dealt with him since but only at last chance back when currency exchange w/ usa was not favourable. I prefer Walcks and WO and now Jo& Harry of Midwestwillys. As for the need to buy repo C channels from MD juan, I think that the steel is readily available and cheaper overall. As for the gateleg, forgive me there is a new 2000 lb crank trailer jack that will be finding its place out front.
I spent 4hrs last night researching the trailer and found out lots. Another site had the service manual available as a PDF. Fun stuff! :D That manual made for easier disassembly and a another site featured the ins and outs of whats original and whats not. Mine is 90% original.
When I get around to it , Stephen Green of Greens panel plus in Maine will be getting a call for a new front panel. I hold his late father in high regard for his artestry and honesty with the metal in my 3b.
In the meantime where have you found parts for the trailer brake system? Missing the cable and will be replacing/restoring the conduit it runs in. Also best place and size for the bearings and seals? Are the shocks the same size as our stock 3b's?

Sometime in the past I had heard the M100 trailer wheels would match the wheels on the jeep that pulled it. A few days ago George at White Owl Parts, http://www.whiteowl.com/ , told me, " most of the parts you have mentioned will interchange with the Jeep. This was the way it was originally designed. The trailer was the same as what pulled it."

So,,, I started looking. Using the parts manual for the M100 trailer I found the drawing with the parts I needed and got the item number off the illustration. Using that item number I looked on the M100 parts list and got the Federal Stock Number for the part I needed.

I then looked at the parts list for the M-38, Truck, 4X4 and found the item number for the same part in a drawing or by crossing over the Federal Stock Number with the list in the back of the M38 Parts manual.

Sure enough, many of the suspension parts of the M100 trailer are the same as on an M-38 Jeep.

Using that item number I was able to look on the M38 parts list and find the Federal Stock Number. AND,, beside the stock number in the M38 manual is listed the manufacture's (WO) part number. I then took the WO number to my CJ3B Parts Manual and found that many items are the same as on my 1953 CJ3B.

Here is a list of parts I have ordered so far and they fit.
Not all on this list are on a 3B, but many are.

U bolt Shackle, right A514
U bolt Shackles, left A513
Spring Shahle bolt 384228
Oil Seal 805150
Red reflector MS35387-1
U Bolt, axle to spring A575
Wheel Bearing 52942
Wheel Bearing cup 52943
Spindle nut A866
Spindle Nut Lock A867
Spindle Nut Washer A865
Axle Gasket 649784

Also realize that every W/O part number that is prefixed with an "A' was originally a part that was used for the MB.
Parts with "A" the prefix were in use thru 1971.

Again, Thanks guys! Especially the research and cross reference work, WOW! I had heard that was the way these trailers were built. I can say thanks to my forgetfulness in the past and over purchases via ebay, I have at least the shackles and pivot bolts.
 As a side note, did you ever do something and then look back and realize how in the world did one not get injured or worse. Short short story, during my de-construction this past week of the trailer while its upside down, I noted that two of the shackles were made by PO in the past from threaded rod and that the nuts had rusted away to nothing but iron particles and one tire had 2psi pressure  .Something I had not noted during my prepurchase inspection . Two good taps with the hammer and the "shackles" dropped out completely releasing the axle on that side. Needless to say I was lucky as I had towed it 10kms home on a somehat rough secondary road. PO also assured me the tires had been aired up before my arrival. I bought a lottery ticket in thanks to the guardian angel on my shoulder last tuesday evening. ;)

Now after all that, and with you providing so much great info on the parts, how can I go about cross reffing the p/n for the bearings and seals to modern day commonplace trailer p/n's? For dealers in the parts besides the host dealer of g503www site, who carries the brake cable?

I'm sure I have the old bearings and seal off my trailer. I'll see if there are any
manufacturer numbers I can forward to you for cross referencing.

I'm lucky to have a old bearing shop in town. The gray haired guy has been able get me anything if I take him a sample.

Don - August 27, 2012 07:42 PM (GMT)
I did not save the seal.
I had the old bearings in the scrap metal box and got this info;

Timken bearing 18590 and on the cup 18520.

A search on the internet for Timken 18590,
provided this info from the CJ2A Page.
=========================

Here is the parts list I used when I restored my Bantam axle:

4 ea. - Cone and Roller Bearing - Timken 18590

4 ea. - Roller Bearing Cup - Timken 18520

2 ea. - Hub oil seal assembly - Spicer 17004 (other possible part numbers are
National 40566 or Chicago Rawhide (CR)21101)

2 ea. - Outer wheel bearing washer - Spicer 17015

2 ea. - Outer wheel bearing nut - Spicer 17016

2 ea. - Outer wheel bearing nut lock washer - Spicer 17017

2 ea. - Wheel flange gasket - Spicer 17146

========================

Good Luck.

Thanks Don for the info!
Now another question has arose during my deconstruction. Is the spring hanger with the shackle mount reproduced or at least the bushing tube for the center. The one on the left side is shot and i'll be in the market for that and probably a set of springs. Good news is the wheels were original KH 16's x 4.5 and bob's rims I got in may drop right on, so at least I can run modern tires when I get done.

Larry (TX) - August 29, 2012 07:54 PM (GMT)
Don, I know John Bizal (by-zul; owner of Midwest Mil.) personally, have bought many parts from him in the past, and can assure all that he's one of the nicest and most trustworthy vendors of military(and now civilian) vehicle parts to deal with. He's also technical savy and has always been happy to share that knowledge.

Sorry, I can't help you with the hanger problem. You might want to compare it to the ones on a M38.

I also don't have a good answer on the shocks. I'm going to try a Munroe 32207. It looks good on paper (computer screen), but since I don't have it in hand yet I'm not sure of exact fit.

I think I'd also look to the M38 for spring sizes.
You can see what I did with my old springs here.
