Everyone please fill in your SIGNATURE with basic jeep detail.

Was it recently working correctly ?

It could be a bad ground, a bad indicator gauge, or tank unit gauge (sender).
So obviously you first need to check for faulty wiring.

Computer problems please SEARCH wiring harness

Then the only thing left is test or replace the fuel gauge and tank unit gauge (sender).
It's most likely one or the other.
The speedometer cluster assembly must be dissassmbled to access the fuel gauge.
The tank unit gauge is much easier to access.
Do you have a multimeter to test OHM's of resistance ?

Many times when the sender goes partially bad it will have portions of the "travel" of the float that don't work at all and portions of the "travel" that do work.

If it hasn't been 'fooled' with I'd first suspect the sender. Even if it had been 'fooled' around with I'd still suspect the sender. There are several kinds of senders, so count the number of screw holes that hold it on. That should get you in the right place.

Grounds.... There is no substitute for good grounds. If I was going to replace the sender I'd first make absolutely, absolutely sure that the gauge itself is grounded well, and that the fuel tank is grounded well. Don't trust the fuel lines to ground the tank -- I usually connect a wire from one of the sender screws to a nice good ground on the body tub or frame.

"I think I'll just try it out before I install the sender.." Don't do it!!! It takes around 6 microseconds to permanently make a sender useless. Most people can't react that quickly. It is possible to check a fuel circuit before installing, but getting everything grounded properly is more trouble than it is worth.

Just install it properly and have faith....

It'll be OK..
