CARTER YF IDENTIFICATION
Specific YF numberical identification is stamped sideways upon a thin reinforcing web at side of the fuel well body. Upon external obsevation of the Carter model YF you will note that it can be roughly divided into 3 sections. 1) The bottom cast iron (generally) section is termed the throttle body or the body flange. This consists of the throttle bore and the throttle vavle. This section mainly controls the air velocity and manifold vacuum. 2) The middle section is termed the fuel well body and mainly controls the fuel metering. 3) The upper section of the YF is termed the air horn assembly which mainly provides the air intake and fuel inlet. It also provides choke function. -------------------- 1953 TRANS-VINTAGE CJ-3B / AC 4693 fuel pump / YF 938 SD / Hurricane / 9-1/4" Auburn clutch / T90-C / 2.46 ratio D-18 / Warn O.D. / 5.375 final drive / Powr Lok Front + Rear / Dualmatic drive flanges / deluxe Koenig half cab / 12 volt generator

thanks oldtime - a little varsol scrub and i see 938 SD stamp
a ) should a '57 have originally had the SD - i think it was the last revision model ? b ) would a old carter SD rebuild kit most likely be correct/best bet for rebuild ? ![]() edit : this one -------------------- 57 3B : big speedo / Hurricane / YF 938 SD / IAY-4012 / T90 / D18 / 5.375 final drive / open diffs / Firestone 6ply Military NDCC / 12v Delco SI alt / Kayline Top / venting windshield / tub patched / "still fixing leaks one at a time"

Randy,
is that your OEM Carter Kit ? That's an exceptionally nice kit. You really ought to document all the parts in the kit. In fact I'll buy it off you and send you a Jeep NOS kit if you don't need all the parts from the OEM Carter kit. Besides minor metering changes the SC and SD use a pump discharge check needle as opposed to the S and SA check ball and weight. -------------------- 1953 TRANS-VINTAGE CJ-3B / AC 4693 fuel pump / YF 938 SD / Hurricane / 9-1/4" Auburn clutch / T90-C / 2.46 ratio D-18 / Warn O.D. / 5.375 final drive / Powr Lok Front + Rear / Dualmatic drive flanges / deluxe Koenig half cab / 12 volt generator

Randy, I never found the Carter OEM YF kits on eBay. You have a link ?
Perhaps the original carburetor was changed out. -------------------- 1953 TRANS-VINTAGE CJ-3B / AC 4693 fuel pump / YF 938 SD / Hurricane / 9-1/4" Auburn clutch / T90-C / 2.46 ratio D-18 / Warn O.D. / 5.375 final drive / Powr Lok Front + Rear / Dualmatic drive flanges / deluxe Koenig half cab / 12 volt generator

Randy,
Did you ever try this zip kit? I bought one too and was wondering if yours worked out for you or not. I have a spare 938 SD that I took apart yesterday with intentions of doing a full rebuild. The first thing the manual says to put back in is the throttle shaft seal and retainer. I didn't see either in the kit. Of course, there didn't appear to be either when I was taking the carb apart, either.... This rebuild might be a bit more complicated than I expected Here are a few pics of the kit, in case you're still interested, Ken: ![]() ![]() -------------------- 1963 CJ3B - F134 Hurricane, T-90C, D-18, 5.38s, Overdrive, 938YF, 12V alternator

Carter skipped the "SB" model and went from "SA" to "SC" directly. I suppose they skipped "SB" for obvious reasons....
-------------------- It's just my luck that something good is going to happen to me today.

The YF carb on my 64 CJ3B has the number 3200S stamped into the web. Is this carburetor correct to my jeep, or is it a transplant? Also would a rebuild kit for a YF 934 SD be compatable?

Carter YF 3200 S is listed for Kaiser fleetvan with F-134 Hurricane.
The repair kit should be identicle with the 938 models. Is this YF 3200 S a vented carburretor ? Is there a vent hose that runs from the top of the carburetor to tha oil bath air filter ? No, there is no bowl vent. Perhaps the top was replaced with an older type.
