I personally like things as original as it can get , but that bumper looks good with the rear spare and your color choice. Are you adding a gas can opposite the spare?

Does the tire block the view of the lamps on the rear of the jeep?

I'd say that bumper looks really good on your Jeep!

I agree with Dick, no bumper needed. When (and if) I customize I like to answer, "function?". Is it to repair or replace an unavailable piece or butcher job? (like my tool belt idea on my dashboard, to cover up butcher holes).
No doubt the bumper looks cool. Will it adversely affect your departure angle? With only a one inch lift I suspect it may. But it does take heavy items (spare, jack, gas can) off your sheetmetal. As in the lengthy discussion of CJ3B "custom" versus "original", what really is original? -------------------- Dave Pete - WY

Thanks for all the great feedback. I also do not want to take away from the orginallity of the willys but the I like the funcition on the rear bumper with the receiver and a nice step for climbing in the back off the jeep. I dont think it will hamper the departure angle, since the orginal one is lower than the new one. I would not drill any holes to mount the bumper, I would make custom brackets and use existing holes.
I am also looking at the Warn rear bumper and also one with the tire carrier built in. Post up any pics of your rear bumpers if you have one. |

Here's a pic of some mounting brackets I fabbed up to put a 48" Highlift on the draw bar. I turned the jack on its side and utilized the holes on the jacks column for the mount. I also made up a cable to lock it to the drawbar in case the jack grows feet.

imtb, here is a picture of our 54 HH. Check out pictures on this post of 54 HH in Moab and see what a bumper would have done.

Jeep enthusiats have also debated the pros/cons of removing the lower bar (where Dick has his receiver hitch).
I left mine on because it protects the spring eyes and shakles. Granted portions of the departure angle would be improved by removing the bar, but not enough in my mind to remove that spring protection. I have a similar setup (no handy pictures) to Dick's, but my fabricated receiver hitch is welded to a plate that bolts to the pintle mount, slightly higher, and acts as a platform for the spare tire holder which tees up to a light-weight frame which in turn bolts to the tailgate latches. I find a bolted tailgate works well cause I reach over, or from in front, and there are no tailgate rattles. Plus that takes care of the whole let's get the spare off the sheet metal thing. -------------------- Dave Pete - WY

This posting photos on this blog is quite challenging. I had three pictures of the rear of the 54 HH to share and I only got one the first time, but maybe this one will connect.
As you can see the angle iron has been hit a few times and the right rear corner of the diamond plate has been hit too. Backing up in certain spots also is interesting with a bunper back there. Although it may protect the sheet metal. But that is why I have the diamond plate on the corners. Dick W. Spokane Wa. c onnect. -------------------- 1954 CJ-3B

These all good comments. I think its a cool idea what matto did with his jack and could be removed for in town use. I also agree with Dave Pete about protecting the spirng shackles. I am going to look at the mounting a receiver to the pintle mount, might be another option.

IMTB, CAN YOU SEE IN THIS PICTURE WHERE i HAVE MOUNTED A SHOVEL AND MY HIGHLIFT JACK? THEY ARE ON THE FRONT SIDE OF THE RACK. THEY DON'T GET USED THAT OFTEN, BUT ARE ALWAYS WITH ME IF I NEED THEM.
THEY ARE OUT OF THE WAY AND THEY STAY FAIRLY FREE OF MUD AND OTHER TRAIL DEBRIS. IN THE RACK I CARRY MY TOW STRAPS AND A TREE SAVER STRAP, EASY ACCESS TO BOTH AND THEY STAY CLEAN UP THERE. DICK W. SPOKANE WA. -------------------- 1954 CJ-3B

I like it, but don't have the same feelings for a High Lift and never take mine on any of the Jeeps.
Obviously not a purest here and the primary reason I made a new bumper was to get more space for a bigger rear tank. My biggest problem (other than rusting out between the bumper & reinforcement plate) was bending the ends, the only purpose for the extensions would appear to be a place for the lic plate. I went shorty, mounted with inserts that extend about 8 inches into the frame rails. The receiver hitch is considerably less obnoxious on the trail than the stock hitch arrangement. -------------------- John, SW Montana
