G'day all,
I've had a couple of goes at buying repro footman loops - most look good in the pictures but the holes don't even line up! Does anyone have a wreck they are parting out (or an old tailgate that's completely shot with rust)? Looking for six original footman loops - I don't mind if they're quite rusty- to replace the ones that sit on the sides of the tub to attach to the top. Will buy from anywhere....regards Dom |

Dom,
Have you contacted Harry Sheets @ Midwest Jeep Parts yet? I'd think he'll have what you're looking for at a fair and reasonable price. Phone # for Harry is 765 362-2247. His e-mail is josheets@tctc.com -------------------- Larry Steed

Dom,
I still have the footman loops on my list of things to buy. So, this problem interests me. As you may already know, there are several sizes available. Most are "referenced" by the size strap they're made for. What I've done is concentrate on the hole distance. If you've measured your body, you should've have noted the holes are 2 1/8" apart. There are some vendors out there who have footman loops in multiple sizes. Below is a link to WeeBee Webbing. In the linked page, if you scroll down, you'll see one example of some of the multiple samples of footman loops that are available. http://odcloth.com/hardware/hardwareinfo.html One note is that there are different hole spacings for the same 1" strap. So it is possible to order a footman loop for a 1" strap and have it be the wrong hole spacing. I was just at a MVPA convention yesterday and one of the vendors had several different kinds of footman loops (black, olive drab, zinc). I didn't get any 'cause I'd forgotten how many I needed. Plus, I was concentrating on seat pans and starter/dimmer switches with the correct plating so I walked off without getting one (just to verify it would fit). You may want to increase your search, as suggested, but also include the military vendors as one may have what you want. If I may ask (to avoid repeating your discovery) which vendor did you use? Was it one on Ebay? -------------------- Rus Curtis

Hi Rus,
Yep, it was one out of Thailand selling a pack of 10, passivated. My stupid fault - they looked about right in the photos so without any further checking I took the plunge. When they arrived I found that the hole spacing was more than 1/8" too wide and that they sat ridiculously tall. My other attempt was from a local parts place - they got binned as they were even further from the mark. Sold as Jeep but generic. That, and i've got a few original and aftermarket (Whitco and Bestop) footman loops lying around from a lifetime of working on AMC era Jeeps, but none of those seem to match up, either. In the few posts i've made since joining the 3B forum I guess I must come across as a complete nutcase, not willing to accept anything non-original. That's not the case, but this is one of those trivial but visible things that'll annoy me every time I look at it! i guess the best way would be to take an original (I still have the tailgate ones) and match it up. I'm surprised that these are scarce - given there must be a lot of rusted out jeeps but particularly tailgates out there. I'll give it some more thought, will try your and Larry's suggestions - thanks... |

Surely someone has some extras - even if only one or two here & there. I might. If no one else speaks up, I'll go a-diggin' and a-countin'. BW

Guys if I'm correct I think it is 2 1/8" for military and 2 1/4" for civilian. WW II jeeps used cast. Any jeep after WW II used stamped.

Topfueler, I'm glad you brought this up. It is difficult to say what each jeep has as things could have been done from one of the many previous owners (PO). This is the main reason I posted the link to WeeBee Webbing so multiple footman loops could be seen side by side. On my jeep, I have NOS tub sides (holes marked with dimples) and a tailgate from a CJ-2A (has serial number stamped in side) and all holes are 2 1/8" on center. So, for my project I'm looking for 2 1/8" spacing. In my Parts Manual, there is no reference (that I can find) to the dimensions. What I did note is the same part number, suggesting the same size at every location. It's incumbent on each jeep owner to measure his own application to verify the dimensions. And as you pointed out be aware of at least two types, cast and stamped. I believe the early 2A loops were painted but since I've seen examples of jeeps with "bare metal" footman loops, I'm going for the plated versions. -------------------- Rus Curtis

As mentioned above, the hole spacing is 2 1/8" between centres and the loop looks like it's stamped.
Mark, yes, the ones I'm looking for are the ones that run down the side of the tub, on the top edge - there are three on each side, total six. If you're interested in selling, let me know.. will send you a message (haven't done that here before, have to figure it out!) |
