Howdy Ya'll,
This is my first time posting on the new board.
I am trying to determine what year my F Head is. My 3B is a 54 VIN# 27325. After a good sanding / cleaning of the water pump boss I was finally able to make out the motor # 4FR183411. I've looked through the tech tips regarding VIN and motor numbers. It appears that the other 54 3B motor #'s start out as 4J with 5 numbers after. Is there a difference between the 4J and 4FR that determines the year model of the motor?
Thanks in advance. I know if there is an answer, this is the place to get it.

Clint,

My 53 3B has the 4J beginning stamped in the block. Could it be possible that your jeep has a vendor rebuilt block, thus the reason for the 4FR #'s stamped therein?

Where in Texas are you located?

Larry,
Thanks for the response. I am not sure if the motor is a vendor rebuild. I noticed on the tech page re: Serial numbers Database that there are several motor numbers starting with the prefix 4FR. This shows up on several different years, thus my wondering as to the year of my motor. Could the difference between 4J and 4FR be the location of install / manufacturing? The things that make you go Hmmm !

By the way, I live just east of Terrell in Elmo. It's about 1/2 way between Terrell and Wills Point off Old Hwy 80. Approx 25 miles East of Mesquite.
Pearland ? Is'nt that near Houston ?

Yes Clint, we abut Houston on their south central and southeast city limits, but we're in Brazoria County.

Speaking of Wills Point, I have to go there in about three weeks to pick up my new gooseneck trailer (from Pro-Trak Trailers). Isn't Hwy. 80 commonly referred to as the old Shreveport Highway?

Larry,
Old Shreveport Hwy... Be careful, you might give away yer age !!! Haha biggrin.gif
But yes, I believe that back in the day thats what Hwy 80 was called. Pro trak trailers is just about 1 mile east of Wills point. They make a real nice trailer. Are you getting a new trailer to haul your Jeeps and Tractors on ? I hope to get a gooseneck for that very reason within the next year if the financial status of the world will ever settle down.
By the way, I looked back at the tech page regarding serial numbers. I believe there are three 53's, a couple 54's and two 55's that have the same prefix 4FR as my motor.
I am still looking for an answer just out of curisority. I have been "rebuilding" my 54 for the last couple years and want to add it to the database. So I guess I will send the info to Derek as is and continue the quest.
When you comming to WillsPoint? I travel quite often but would like to meet another Jeep Head if I am in town. Seems like I know ya already from reading the Bulliten board for the last several years.

4LR serial number prefix engines were Willys factory replacement flat 'L' head short blocks. I am going to go out on a limb and say the 4FR prefix engines were factory replacement F head short blocks.

Thanks Bob,
Sounds like you may be on the right track. Your idea makes sense. This has turned into more of a delimna that I thought. Now I am really curious. I will continue the quest and let ya'll know what I come up with.

Thanks,
