SALTBURN author Chris Scott Wilson has recently published a book featuring the Whitby coastline, called Scarborough Fair.

Better known for his gritty westerns, Wilson became enthralled in the murky legend of a Scottish born, American privateer who would become America’s first great naval hero, John Paul Jones.

Jones volunteered to serve his adopted nation and was sent to France to secure a ship in which to attack English shipping.

A year later he became a national hero when he fought against a brand new English frigate the HMS Serapis in the Battle of Flamborough Head in 1779, just a few miles south of Scarborough.

Wilson, who previously wrote a chronicle of Whitby’s rich seafaring history – A flavour of Whitby, discovered that Jones had captured a fisherman off the shores of Whitby in an attempt to find a pilot who knew the local waters around Scarborough.

As he recalls: “That gave me the link to use both Scarborough and Whitby as settings in the book.

“I’ve always loved both towns.”

The book has already received glowing reviews and best-selling author Clive Cussler added his congratulations when he described Scarborough Fair as “a terrific story”.

He added: “The Serapis and Bonhomme Richard - John Paul Jones’ ship - battle was always a great adventure tale and Chris did it proud.”

Scarborough Fair by Chris Scott Wilson is now available in ebook format from all leading online retailers.
