  Well .... the reason I posted this topic was because it was raised in the local paper and the response from a navy source said that a SHIP is a vessel that can carry BOATS. Therefore, Andy, you are correct about Submarines being referred to as "Boats".

I'll say that a boat refers to a freshwater vessel and a ship refers to a sea going vessel

  My guess, Boats are small. Ships are 100 ft. or more. Submarines are Boats. titanic.gif

  I've always thought a ship was a vessel capable of regular trans-oceanic voyages, or at least deep-water transit. Boats are 'utility' vessels used in harbours, on lakes, for recreation etc. Always exceptions to the rule though. wink.gif

I always refer to submarines as boats...
