Lost City contained a nember of references to Edgar Allen Poe literature including: The 'The Cask of Amontillado' and 'The Pit and the Pendulum' among others during Madame Fachaud's masquerade party. I believe Austin even made an analogy stating that Madame Fauchaud made Dracula look like Mother Teresa.

"Sixteen Tons" Sahara p-330

Giordino eased to a sitting position with his back against a timber. "You load 16 tons and what do you get?" he said, quoting the song.

  S- Music/Songs Addition:

"Silver Threads Among the Gold" Raise the Titanic! (71)

Note: At first I thought Sandecker's coded message, which includes a reference to this song, was a clever creation on Clive Cussler's part. But my curiosity lead to a Google search. There is a song entitled "Silver Threads Among the Gold" by Eben E. Rexford [1848-1916] and Hart Pease Danks (melody) in 1873!
