Sounds like it was a good time.

I've watched the DVD and listend to the Eisner/MM combo-commentary and I thought they added some pretty good insight into the making of the film. Especially useful, I felt, were the snippets about how a lot of the decisions on scenes to cut, edits to make, etc were based on input received from the test audiences. For example, the test audiences wanted to get to the main action faster rather than waiting through TWO prologues and it just disrupted the flow so much that in the end, despite Cussler's daughter playing Kitty Mannock, they felt it best to leave her out of the movie. Granted, fans of the book wanted to see her included, but in the grand scheme of things her scenes didn't add enough and audiences didn't want to see her. Good stuff.

Thanks for all the info, Phil. I can't even afford to put gas in my car, let alone buy a sweet entertainment theatre such as that. Not to mention powering it up. I bet the lights in your neighbors' houses dim a little when you turn it on. laugh.gif

Friday night you say? Live anywhere near Hale Michigan? jester.gif

Sorry oswalder, I'm in Mountain View, CA (about 35 miles South from SF), ... but if you were here, ... you're more than welcome to join the festivities!!! thumbsup.gif beersmilie.gif

Some of my friends couldn't come tonight (Friday), so we had a practice "Sahara" party for the group of 5 w/lemon-lime margarita's last Wednesday - 7:40 pm! It was a success and everyone enjoyed the movie and no, they didn't see it @ the Theater.

Tonight's group is around 5, ... they missed "Sahara" in the Theater's locally so I'm expecting the same fun times!!! My wife is adding strawberry margarita's to the drink list!

  Excellent quick summary Giordino13!!!

Concerning the BestBuy Bonus DVD, ... the main featurette adds more details on the Camel chase / Train boarding logistic's. For a while, they didn't think Penelope Cruz could gallop the camel. Penelope Cruz didn't think she could do it. The look on Breck Eisner face during these discussion was of concern! In the end, Penelope practiced and galloped the camel garnering praise from Eisner! He felt she did better than McConaughey & Zahn!!!

Boarding the train was another logistic safety issue that was addressed by a mechanical camel moving mount on a camera mounted vehicle / platform!

During the days they filmed, the filming was disrupted by a sand storm and rain!

On the Main Movie DVD - "Across the Sands of Sahara" featurette, Eisner mention the filming was also disrupted by a swarm of locusts!

All the various delays (sand, rain, locusts) @ the "Sahara' location shoot definitely added to the overall 130mil production cost!

Great stuff!!! Hope the DVD's sell, ... I've read that as an overall AVG., ... approx. 80% of the DVD sales will go to Paramount Picture studio through their home entertainment divisions.

Just watched the DVD yesterday...and I loved it! The movie was great as always, and the extra scenes were hilarious with Steve Zahn. It was interesting to hear how they made the movie. No wonder it costed so much to make; if I remember correctly, they rented 5 tanks, 4 helicopters, 10 APC's, and had over 2,000 extras. In addition to that, they actually made the Ironclad Texas, and made three Calliopes. The giant refelcting mirrors used on the solar plant probably weren't cheap either. laugh.gif

But this DVD is great, and I'm sure it'll do great in stores. Inca Gold, anyone? bullwhip.gif

HTE ("Home Theater Enthusiasts" Language)

It's a common practice for owner's of 6.1/7.1 AV REC/AMPs to Force-ON** the Matrix 6.1 Mode w/DD/DTS-5.1 Blockbuster DVD's to take advantage of the Rear Center Channel speakers!

Here's my 20' x 30' w/10' high vaulted ceiling HT/family room overhead view!

Otherwise, w/DD/DTS-5.1 DVD's, the Rear Center Channels is silence, whereas, ... Forcing-ON** the Matrix 6.1 Mode will ... take identical encoded 5.1 R&L Side Channel INFO and usually route it to the Rear Center Channel Speakers.

"Sahara" DD-5.1 sound is predominantly mixed nicely in the Front R/C/L Channels with excellent seamless panning <Right >< Center >< Left> sound(s) directionality that matches the on-screen activity! The Side Rear Channels are utilized sparingly to add to the big on-screen overall action scene's and adds some unobtrusive sound effects that puts you into the moment, ... **i.e. when the Texas Captain order's the engines stopped, ... the return cannon firing stopped (close the covers), ... and ... while the camera pans to the different sailor's inside the Texas, the exploding cannon-balls and shrapnel sound surrounds you. Adding the Rear Center Channel speakers helps centralized some sounds directly behind you adding a complete 360-degree surround effects!!! Far superior vs. what is produced by the Side R & L Channels as a phantom center! The "Sahara" surround sound mix does not disappoint!!!

I REFERENCE Calibrate my JBL S-Series & SVS 25-31PCi power sub using Dolby Labs DD-EX 6.1 and dedicated LFE (low frequency effects channel) test tones.

At -10 dB below REF Level (approx. 106 dBc of Fast LFE SPL peaks) , you can feel the impact, ... of the exploding cannon balls, Sandecker's speed-boat/yacht, dynamite thrown by Eva, & General Kazim helicopter, ... in the couch, floor, walls, air and pant-legs (SVS trait)!!! Definitely more satisfying than our April / "Sahara" Theater experience!!!

I watched "Sahara" DVD twice already and plan to watch it again later tonight!!! Just making final adjustments before my Friday NITE DVD "Sahara" party!!!

FYI: My Home Theater @ Webshots and Free-account*** GeoCities HT Website (since 1999)

***NOTE: Because my website is 'free', hosted by GeoCities, if too many HT enthusiasts visit, GeoCities will shut it down for an hour or so because it exceeded the specified 'freebie' Data Transfer Rate. Sorry about that, just bookmark it and visit my site an hour later or when everyone has gone to bed!

Hope this helps,

I will force-ON the Matrix 6.1 mode to add more rear center channel separation - in most blockbuster DVD's, the DD/DTS-5.1 surround mixes
