WATCH OUT EOS ADVENTURER!!! unsure.gif Somethings defionately fishy in those Canadian waters. pirate.gif
Mostly Heep Posted on Jun 3 2006, 07:35 PM
Calloway anchored the Eos Adventurer in a small cove ten miles north of the wreck site.Out of site of the Canadian Coast Guard the crew readied the submersible for it's initial dive.
Giordino and Pitt Jr went over the pre-dive checklist and made sure all the systems were in working order, while Summer packed them some sandwichs and a thermos of steaming coffee.
An hour after anchoring Giordino walked up to Captain Calloway as he stood on the bridge wing.
"We're all set Captain. We can launch anytime"
Calloway nodded."Alright" he said glancing out the window at the lightening sky."It'll be dawn in another half an hour so we should have you in the water before then"
Giordino and Pitt Jr shoehorned themselves into the tiny sub and closed the hatch.Waving at the divers through the thick Lexon windows they held on tight as the crane swung them off the stern and into the cold Pacific water. The world dissappeared in a surge of bubbles as the diver unhooked the coupling device and rapped his knife handle on the glass to signal they were free.
Pitt engaged the motor, adjusted the planes and dove the little sub down into the dark depths.
It took them over an hour to make their way the ten miles and 15,000 feet to the sea floor. It was a boring ride through complete darkness,Giordino used his time to work on a crossword puzzle as Dirk read a book and listened to his MP3 player.
Soon the bottom loomed up and filled the windshield.Switching on the outside lamps, the area was bathed in light for the first time ever.A featureless landscape punctuated here and there by mounds of rock, the sand stretched off into infinity as the two men gazed out the window.
"Eos1 to Adventurer" Giordino called.
"Go ahead Eos1" came the reply.
"We're at the bottom and starting our search"
"Copy that Eos1.We'll follow your progress from up here and monitor the Coast Guard positions. If anything changes you'll be the first to know"
"Thanks Adventurer.Eos1 out"Giordino turned and winked at Pitt."Nice to know they're looking out for us"
Dirk was just about to reply when the sonar started beeping and the needle made huge swings across the paper.
"We've got something big Al" he said quietly
"Which direction?"
"20 degrees to port and 300 yards away" came the reply
Giordino banked the small sub until it was skimming along the bottom.
"Slow down" Dirk yelled
Giordinos reaction time had been honed by years of flying or piloting everything under the sun and before the words were barely out of Dirk's mouth he had brought the sub to a stop mere feet from the huge fantail of the sunken ferry.
The white paint with blue trim shone brightly in the glare from the lamps.

Dirk wasn't sure what woke him,but he came awake with a start.
In the glow of the dying fire he sensed rather than saw a figure standing across the fire looking at them.He quickly looked around for his clothes and to his surprise found them gone.
His eyes narrowed as he looked back at the figure."It's not nice to steal peoples clothes when they're sleeping" he said quietly
A small chuckle came from the darkness."I did not steal them my friend. My wife is drying them for you as we speak"
Dirk was sure his ears were playing tricks on him but he recognized the voice.
"Mason? Is that you?"
Again the small chuckle from the darkness."Yes,my friend,it is I"
Dirk sighed with visible relief "Thank-god.You had me worried for a minute there. Please don't be offended if we don't stand up and shake your hand"
Mason Broadmoor roared with laughter at Dirk's joke."No worries my friend" he said as he walked into the dim fire light and sat across from them."So are you going to tell me why you and your new wife are naked on the beach in front of a dying fire?"
Dirk shook his head while trying unsuccessfully to cover Loren up while she still slept."You'll never believe it"
Mason laughed again"Why wouldn't I? You're Dirk Pitt! Anythings possible with you my friend"
Now it was Dirk's turn to laugh "If you beleive that I've got some waterfront property in Idaho I'd like to sell you".
They both laughed.
Dirk looked into the fire then up at Mason with a hard look in his eyes.
"If you must know we were on our honeymoon until the ferry sank and we ended up swimming for our lives. We were going to come for a visit"
Broadmoor nodded thoughtfully and put a few more branches onto the fire.
"I was out fishing when I heard about the ferry sinking on the radio and came over to see if I could help with the rescue. There was nothing I could do so I decided to spend the night in a little cabin I know just up the hill from here.I saw your fire when I landed and came over to investigate.I didn't realize I'd find you naked and sleeping on the beach" Mason winked at the embarrased look on Dirk's face."I'll be back in a minute"
He stood up and turned to go before stopping as if he had suddenly thought of something.
"Don't go anywhere" he chuckled as he moved out of the light
"Funny guy" Dirk muttered as he checked on Loren.

Mason soon re-appeared carrying a few wollen blankets and a picnic hamper. He threw the blankets on the ground and gave one to Loren, who was awake by this time, and another to Dirk.He held up the hamper with a satisfied grin."Courtesy of Irma"

Dirk shivered violently with cold as he tried to strike a match and light the small patch of dried lichen he had found in a small crevice. He had gathered as many small dry branches as he could find and arranged them in the form of a teepee with the lichen inside.
"Bloody Boy Scouts, they make it look so easy" He muttered under his breath as he tried unsuccessfully to stop his hands from shaking long enough to get the match to light. Finally a spark held long enough for Dirk to blow on it and get a small flame burning.Cautiousley adding small bits of bark and tree branches he soon had a good sized fire burning brightly. The warmth felt so good after the freezing swim and the soaking rain.
He stripped off his soaking wet sweater and huddled closer to the blazing fire almost burning his eyebrows in the process.Loren started to stir and moan as the heat penetrated her stupor.Dirk pulled her closer to him and removed her wet clothes.Proping her up he slid in behind her and huddled close for added warmth, between the fire and his body heat she slowly started to regain some of her faculties.
"What happened?" She mumbled "Why am I wet and naked in front of a fire?"
"We took a little swim curtesy of Rita and Dennis"Pitt answered.
Loren seemed to accept that explanation as entirely normal when you are with someone like Dirk Pitt.
"I'm so tired Dirk" She yawned
"Me too"
Once they stopped shivering they fell into a deep sleep, both of them huddled together for warmth.

Captain Calloway was pushing the Eos Adventurer hard.Standing on the bridge he could feel the deck plates vibrating but even without that feeling he would have known their speed just by the force the rain was hitting the windscreen. The large drops were splattering as if shot from a cannon.Visibility was cut down to fifty yards and he moved his eyes from the radar screen to the windscreen and back with frequency as his ship tore up the strait. He loved this kind of weather,he liked to say that it seperated the men from the boys.
Growing up in the small town of Yarmouth,Nova Scotia in the mid sixties he had hired on a fishing boat at 14 and had been at sea ever since. He had seen everything the North Atlantic could come up with while fishing for cod and halibut off the Grand Banks. He spent two years on a Canadian ice breaker off the coast of Greenland, another four years as first mate on a Princess cruise ship before finally being hired by Numa in 1989 and working his way to Captain on one of the newest research vessels in the NUMA fleet. He smiled to himself as he realized how lucky he was.
A small sound crowded in on his thoughts and he turned to find Summer standing behind him with a mug of coffee in her hand.
"Sorry to interupt Captian but I thought you might like something hot to drink"
Calloway smiled at the beautiful red head with the smoke grey eyes."Thank-you my dear.It does get a little chilly up here."
Summer worked her way over to the chart table and studied their latest position."We're almost there aren't we?"
"Yep.Another half hour at this speed should put us on site."
"What about the Canadian Coast Guard?" She asked
"Rudi is taking care of them at this moment"
Summer nodded and thanking the Captain wandered back to her cabin her head bowed in deep thought.
