I emailed Helene about a year ago concerning the use of the word wraith in Cussler's books. I think that he uses that word in almost evey book he writes so I thought you'd like to find the phrase that uses the word and tell which book it is in.

Actually, I already posted this in General Observations, Repeating themes. But will post the examples again here.

A marine seal is usually defined as an aquatic carnivorous mammal with webbed flippers and soft fur, but the wraithlike phantoms who suddenly materialized around Prevlov and the fallen guards bore little resemblance to their namesake.
Raise the Titanic! (67)

A quarter-moon was beginning to rise over the horizon, giving the pitiful creatures on board the raft the look of ghostly wraiths, some of whom suddenly began rising to their feet and moving toward the prohibited area in the center.
Shock Wave (Raft Of The Gladiator)

Wraithlike figures reeled against each other, recklessly clubbing and slashing, the bodies of convicts, sailors and soldiers intermingling as they fell.Shock Wave (Raft Of The Gladiator)

One moment he was there, the next he had vanished like a wraith.
Atlantis Found (5)

Quite as a wraith, Giordino climbed over the stern railing, ...
Valhalla Rising (19)

Yes, there are more examples. Keep your eyes opens and share when you spot them!

"She retreated into the shadows of the veranda as soundlessly as a wraith," (Shockwave, pg. 302).

Sorry about that. Its chapter 22 in the softcover, the movie edition cover that has the cast on it.

Also in Sahara, the same edition...

"Wraiths" pg. 240 very end of ch. 25

There are about two other ref's to the word in Sahara, but there in another edition..... I can't find them at the moment.

Thank you Dear_Heart05! Here are the two examples you mentioned:

He studied the stream of the pedestrians on the street, trying to absorb a rhythm to their movements. They seemed to glide up and down the street in their loose, flowing garments on silent feet like wraiths. Sahara (22)

The beams caught haunting shadowscast from an occasional manna tree that seemed tp flit and dart across the landscape like wraiths. Sahara (25)
