While on the related subject of maritime expeditions, Cussler's non-profit agency is actually named "after" the agency he created in his Dirk Pitt adventures --- NUMA!

The U.S.S. Merrimack was an ironclad just like the "Texas" in Sahara.

The National Underwater & Marine Agency (NUMA) was an idea forwarded by an attorney and eventual president of NUMA, Wayne Gronquist. Clive Cussler himself was against the idea but was out-voted.

Clive Cussler's involvement with the search for John Paul Jones 's famous Revolutionary War ship, the Bonhomme Richard , led to his establishing NUMA:
"Then in 1979 during an expedition, where I was searching for John Paul Jones' ship, the Bonhomme Richard an Austin attorney who was a volunteer suggested that I should incorporate as a non-profit organization rather than just write the checks out of my own bank account. Dirk Pitt is a Major in the Air Force.

Clive Cussler was in the Air Force and stationed at Hickam in 1951.
