The earliest I remember was Sahara and that scared me because I thought it was going to be the last book because of that. And he has been appearing in every DP book since then.

Shockwave had a great cameo with him at the mine in British Columbia.

I thought Dragon was the first, and Clive put it in there as a joke thinking his editors would make him take it out. The fans liked it so he kept doing it and I think he has appeared in every book since. Of course I have no basis for that, just speculation and not being able to remember a single book after Dragon where he didn't appear. The issue is addressed in "Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt Revealed" I think, too.

I thought the Shock Wave was CC in the catamaran rescuing Dirk, Al and Maeve (or maybe just Dirk and Al - been a while since I read it) from the drifting submersible. Dragon was the vintage car race between Dirk and CC, IIRC. Inca Gold was Clive as an old prospector with a mule? Interestingly, I can't for the life of me remember the cameos from Flood Tide, Atlantis Found, Trojan Odyssey, Valhalla Rising or Black Wind. Looks like I need to read them again! |

I thought the first appearance was in Sahara when they run into him in the desert as "The Kid".

He helped Dirk Jr. and Summer escape in Black Wind from that cave I think.
He was a worker dressed in overalls in one book... Shock Wave? At the mine somewhere up north? |

You are correct. I get a kick out of the cameo's. And Pitt asking don't I know you from some where. It's the little things like that that have made Mr. Cussler one one my favorite writers. |
