No sub in Sahara, Tony. (Or if there was mention of one, it was incendental). From what I can gather, there were only two submarines that played any sort of part in the Civil War--the Alligator and the Hunley. I can't recall either craft every playing a part in a Cussler novels, but there have been so many in the last few years that I'll confess I haven't kept up. I certainly could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain that there's no civil-war era subs in any of what I consider the Classic Dirk Pitt series (Pacific Vortex-Valhalla Rising).
The sub in VR, inspired by (or the inspiration for perhaps) Jules Verne might be the closest thing. Anyone got other information? |

In Sahara the Civil War Sub was buried in the desert. It was a small part of the story but it was there.

There are a lot subs in the Cussler books, but not very many historic boats. Part of the reason for that is the fact that it's only been in the last 100 years that all the engineering limitations were worked out. A lot of those early plans--the Hunley, the Turtle--while technically able to go below the surface, couldn't go very far. You might think of this as the difference between snorkeling and SCUBA diving. One might be forgiven for thinking of the early ironclads as submarines since they rode pretty low in the water and looked pretty much like a submarine riding on the surface, but our nameless guest is correct: the only time an ironclad might go below the surface was if it sank. Submarines in Clive Cussler novels (an incomplete list): Pacific Vortex (Starbuck) Mediterranean Caper (U-19) Atlantis Found (U-2015) Valhalla Rising (Golden Marlin, Coral Wanderer, The Nautilus) Black Wind (I-403) I haven't included here the occasional appearance of active duty navy subs (such as the Denver rescuing Pitt in Cyclops or the stand-off with the Soviets in Raise the Titanic), or all the many submersibles used by NUMA. I also don't have at my fingertips a list of the subs in the new series--German mini-subs play a key role in Spartan Gold (which I just recently reread); a former Soviet Typhoon class sub is used in Medusa--I'm sure there are many others that have slipped my mind. |

If you're just getting started with Cussler, it would really behoove you to work your way through the books in sequence. It's not completely necessary, but there's a lot of character evolution that will make more sense if you do them in order. At a bare minimum, you should read Vixen 03 (it's a little dated, and kind of a heavy read, but it introduces a very important character) and then maybe Shock Wave and Flood Tide. Events in Shock Wave are referenced quite a bit, and Flood Tide might be thought of as Book Zero of The Oregon Files.
For pure reading pleasure, you could probably skip ahead to Treasure or maybe Sahara. Those books pretty well move Dirk Pitt into the post Cold War era (which now feels pretty dated) and all the books after that follow a pretty comfortable formula of Pitt vs. maniac criminal bad dude trying to take over the world somehow. If you go right to Valhalla Rising, you will get a serious spoiler. |

I think Valhalla Rising is one of his best books. What a ending. To the new Cussler fan on this site you are going to love it!

Oh no! Vixen 03 is the best Cussler ever, and not even close to "heavy read" as Cussler was writing on topic, not about female fashion or foods. |
