Dirk Pitt's past lovers, What happens to them in the novels

I just got through reading "Shock Wave" and there is a reference to a past lover named Summer and that she was killed a few years ago in one of Dirk Pitt's stories.
What is the time line for this character and how did she die?

Summer Moran was Dirk's love interest in Pacific Vortex, which is considered to be the first Pitt adventure, although it wasn't published until after Night Probe.

It should be required reading for any Cussler fan, since it sets the stage for a very important (and somewhat controversial) development in the series that occurs in Valhalla Rising and changes everything.

As to the question of how she died...well, I could answer that, but why spoil the fun? Here's a hint though--You won't find out from reading Pacific Vortex.
