Title: Policy questions and discussion
Description: lol whut?
Knight - January 8, 2009 02:59 AM (GMT)
Alright, I quit being lazy and set up a shiny new category at the top for the ten commandments thread, and anything else we eventually deem important enough to go up here. For the most part, I'd like to keep this subforum as free of clutter as possible, but the thread is open for suggestions on additions or changes.
Notty - January 9, 2009 02:58 AM (GMT)
I should totally get a mod edit color. :P
I noticed the forum names that MFD used out in the Commandments post are inconsistent with the actual names of the forums in question, Comic Discussion instead of Comic-by-comic, and whatnot. Nitpicky, but it seemed worth pointing out.
And the video game spoiler rule seems a little harsh. It's also worth pointing out whether or not spoiler rules are as strict in in threads devoted to a particular subject (Example: Game/Anime spoilers in the Pokemon thread.)
Other than those few things, everything looks pretty snappy.
Knight - January 9, 2009 03:01 AM (GMT)
If you want a mod edit color, you can make your own post about it in the RP forum. :P
mordain - January 9, 2009 03:02 AM (GMT)
Pick a color and you can have it, but you're sort of limited in range.
I'm not sure if spoiler rules are more than guidelines. Generally other discussion on the subject will tell you how to proceed with it. And if there isn't any it's probably new enough to warrant spoilertext. :P
Algasir - January 9, 2009 03:04 AM (GMT)
He DOES have a mod color, it's
He only seems to use it to make those "This post was edited by Notty at *date/time*" lines, though.
mordain - January 9, 2009 03:06 AM (GMT)
Nah, I think we just didn't give him the ability to avoid that.
Because we're jerks like that.
Notty - January 9, 2009 03:09 AM (GMT)
*shakes fist*
The man's always tryin' to keep me down!
Red Silvers - January 9, 2009 05:42 AM (GMT)
You know, when I originally saw that post about colors (way back when it was a GJ post, I think) I assumed it was some sort of Halloween thing.
MikePB - January 9, 2009 06:24 AM (GMT)
mordain - January 16, 2009 06:53 PM (GMT)
Edited the "Creating a new account" thread.
Maybe it wasn't clear enough, or something. But interestingly enough, I've had "CenExenmVox" (the name I mentioned as an example of gibberish) attempt to register several times recently... I'm not sure if I happened to pick one particularly persistent spammer, or what...
Algasir - January 16, 2009 07:49 PM (GMT)
Either that or lots of (real) people are registering under that name in an attempt to be cute.
Red Silvers - January 17, 2009 03:10 AM (GMT)
Which is probably reason enough not to let them in. Coming up with a unique name is cake.
Spriteless Girl - January 17, 2009 04:41 AM (GMT)
It at least shows an intelligent mind at work, though. Bent towards evil, but intelligent.
Red Silvers - January 17, 2009 04:46 AM (GMT)
Or its a very persistant spam bot.
Knight - January 17, 2009 04:32 PM (GMT)
I'm guessing the latter. I know I've seen the same spammer name show up more than once

Due to a recent apparent problem with this rule, I am modifying it to more clearly convey its intention. This is not a punitive measure; rather, it is simply an effort to add clarity. The new version is as follows:

MFD - March 2, 2009 05:23 PM (GMT)
Otherwise, take it to IM/PM.

So is the new rule that if you create an alt, it automatically gets banned and any posts regarding it get deleted?
Cause if that's the case, I think that's a big steamin' load of crap.
Spriteless Girl - March 6, 2009 03:21 AM (GMT)
Indeed. I thought alts were only not allowed when they were used to circumvent banning, or when they actually did something annoying.

Where did you see anything like that? I've looked, and I can't find any rules regarding alts at all.
Algasir - March 6, 2009 03:29 AM (GMT)
There were a bunch of posts in the intro thread that got deleted.
It was mostly spam as far as the intro thread is concerned, however.

The fact that an alt just introduced himself, Mordain's immediate response was something about alerting the ban-Mafia or whatever, and all the posts regarding it or talking abpout alts in general suddenly disappeared.
MikePB - March 6, 2009 03:31 AM (GMT)
That's only for BANNED members who try to come back with alts. Like Hecton. Like Red Pipes.
Though, keep in mind alts that YOU guys make ARE frowned upon.
Come on, guys. It's common sense. Before you do it, at LEAST clear it with one of the mods.
Immolation - March 6, 2009 03:34 AM (GMT)
You guys need to make a list of things you do frown upon since you are the ones who have the ultimate say in what's apparently allowed.

Never have before. Why start now?
MikePB - March 6, 2009 03:38 AM (GMT)
What IS frowned upon is common sense. If you THINK about it.
I mean, come on. Most alts just end up being annoying. Or pointless. Remember Newb's "I never wanna have 1000 posts" phase?
We're not tyrants fer christ's sake. If you've got a good reason for having an alt, we'll let it go.
Alan Bates - March 6, 2009 03:41 AM (GMT)
You want to make it a rule. Fine. Make it a rule. I'll still bitch about it, like people bitched to me when I tried to enforce the rules JayDee gave us to follow back on Buzz, but at least it'll be a rule.
You want to pull stuff out of nowhere, ban the things without warning, and delete all post pertaining to it because you personally don't like it? That's crap and somebody's got some appologizin' to do.
Spriteless Girl - March 6, 2009 03:42 AM (GMT)
But... Captain Obvious would log on and post whenever we call someone Captian Obvious. Isn't funny a good reason? I mean, I assume that's what Captain Obvious would do. I certainly am not the one with a plan to use that account.
Immolation - March 6, 2009 03:44 AM (GMT)
Atleast we still have Master of the obvious to count on.
Now someone go clear an Alt account of that name with Knight, it needs to happen.
mordain - March 6, 2009 03:45 AM (GMT)
There is absolutely no point in having an alt for the sole purpose of repeating things loudly. It's not humorous, it by nature is incapable of contributing anything to any discussion, since it can just repeat what is already blatantly obvious and/or has already been stated.
The spam in the intro thread was deleted because it was spam. Spam is *always* and always *has* been deleted from the intro thread.
Alan Bates - March 6, 2009 03:48 AM (GMT)
So, the job of a mod includes choosing what is and isn't funny now as well?
MikePB - March 6, 2009 03:49 AM (GMT)
Okay. First:
Captain Obvious? Really? REALLY?
Second: No one owes ANYONE an apology. Untwist your knickers and move on.
Third: You want it to be a rule? Seriously? I thought that "no annoying alts" would be common sense and good ettiqute. I guess I was wrong.
Fourth: I'm sorry you had such a shitty time as Admin/Mod. I really am. But you can't keep bringing it up every time you have issues with how this place is run.
Alan Bates - March 6, 2009 03:52 AM (GMT)
Asking somebody to be nice is one thing. Enforcing rules that don't even exist is another.
MikePB - March 6, 2009 03:55 AM (GMT)
So... we should document every unwritten rule around here?
Is that what you want?
Then, we'd hear nothing but bitching and moaning about there being too many rules.
Notty - March 6, 2009 03:57 AM (GMT)

I think what Alan's shooting at here isn't that you should actually write down every tiny little rule you can think of so we have it as proof, but rather that we shouldn't bother having little rules like that in the first place.
Alan Bates - March 6, 2009 04:00 AM (GMT)
All I'm saying here is that if something is wrong, banning accounts and deleting posts probably shouldn't be the first step you take.
And if you're going to get rid of an account because it's annoying, shouldn't you actually take time to let it post so you can tell whether it's going to be annoying or not?
MikePB - March 6, 2009 04:04 AM (GMT)
Uh huh. "Captain Obvious"
... I'm pretty sure that would not be funny and would get annoying immediately. He who came up with it should really have known better.
Knight - March 6, 2009 04:05 AM (GMT)
Good god, is this all it takes to kick up a shitstorm around here? A stupid alt was created and subsequently removed... step back and take a breath, people. Seriously, Grow the hell up.
Alan Bates - March 6, 2009 04:06 AM (GMT)
So getting rid of an account because "I think it'll get annoying and unfunny pretty quickly," sounds logical to you?
MikePB - March 6, 2009 04:08 AM (GMT)
Actually yes. Real people we give a chance to.
Why the hell do we need alts for?
Now, I think we should all listen to Knight.
