Just in time to see THAT fly past. What could it be?


Oh, I see, this is a game about a boy and his dog. What fun adventures will they have?


RUNNING FROM GIANT BUGS oh crap why did I ride down this field.


That poor bug is about to get eaten. Remember, there's always a bigger fish.

After being blasted by a giant space dragon from nowhere, our title screen shows up! Looks kinda bland, doesn't it?


Oh, that's much better.

What is Pokémon Emerald 386?

Short answer here. Pokémon Emerald 386 is a ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald. The game is designed with the ability to catch all 386 Pokémon in the 3rd gen National Pokédex in one game. Kanto and Johto Pokémon not found in Emerald? You can catch them. Pokémon you normally need to trade to evolve? New evolution methods. Event Pokémon like Mew, Lugia, and Ho-oh, that were programmed into Emerald ANYWAY? You can catch them!

It's worth mentioning that I'm playing the Mantine fix version of the game. The original version of 386 was apparently missing the ability to catch Mantine. But I can handle that now.

I debated doing a Nuzlocke game, but since 386 has a lot more Pokémon to catch, I thought that playing Nuzlocke would kinda defeat the purpose of playing this version instead of the normal Emerald.

...Okay, so that wasn't exactly a short answer. So sue me, let's start this off!

Welcome to the world of Pokémon! My name is BIRCH. But everyone calls me the Pokémon PROFESSOR.
...I'm pretty sure that you stole Oak's nickname. In fact, I don't think anyone calls you that at all!


This world is widely inhabited by creatures known as Pokémon. We humans live alongside Pokémon, at times as friendly playmates, and at times as cooperative workmates.


But despite our closeness, we don't know everything about Pokémon. In fact, there are many, many secrets surrounding Pokémon. To unravel Pokémon mysteries, I've been undertaking research. That's what I do.


Hold it right there!

So this is the part of every Pokémon Let's Play where they ask you to pick a gender and name our brave, silent hero. But not this time. Oh no, this time we have a gimmick.

You see, in Ruby, Emerald, and Sapphire, when you pick your gender, the opposite gender becomes your rival. The original games even vary their teams slightly in one battle depending on which rival you have (it's a minor change, but it counts!) Of course, since this is an editted game, EVERY battle could be different for all I know.

Nonetheless, the two rivals do have odd little personality quirks that show up in the beginning of the game.


If you choose to play as a girl, Brendan will be your rival. When you meet him, he's disappointed that you're a girl, since your father is this badass Gym Leader so he'd clearly have a badass boy as a kid! Sexist jerk.


If you choose to play as a boy, May will be your rival. When you meet her, she rambles about how she loves all the Pokémon in the world and wants them to be her friend. ...She's basically the type of girl that makes Brendan up there so sexist.

So, which do we want more for a rival? Sexiest Brendan, who we need to show a taste of GIRL POWER to, or Bubbly May, who every time we win a battle we're hurting her friends?

...oh fine, and you can give suggestions for names too.

Anyway, since I am lacking in the creativities at the moment, I'll wait a while then just upvote a funny suggestion later.

I have played through Sapphire as a female, and Red Chocobo did regular Emerald as one. I vote for male, as I won't know all the rival's lines before hand.

I vote he is named May for maximum confusion.

I just noticed. Pokemon is discriminate against transgender people! They only let you choose a boy or girl! What if I wanted to play a hermaphrodite, huh?

I think the fact that the professors of the game can't tell whether you're a boy or a girl is more offensive. :P

I say go with a girl named Brendan with a rival named May.

You can't name your rival, Invin. Just your character.

And Algasir, to be fair, with the way the characters are drawn, there are no obvious differences between boys and girls except hair, and that can easily be inaccurate.

But yeah, either invin's or Spriteless' name choice works for me.

Basic definitions:

Gender is who you are. It's how the brain's wired, how you identify, things like that. Since we (should) treat others as conscious beings with identities and feelings rather than things, this is the one that tends to matter most. (Gender in general is not a synonym for sex; it's more conceptual and more dealing with masculinity and femininity etc. Plants have sexes, words have genders)

Sex is the physical aspect. It's all the stuff controlled by hormones and chromosomes and such (well, it's all hormones when you get down to it). Also often includes surgical modifications.

Gender role is the societal aspect of this. No matter what the gender or sex of the person in question, if they're wearing a dress they're acting in what American society would see as a feminine gender role. An example I heard a while ago about how gender roles shift through various societies and times is that writing poetry while holding tea parties is a feminine thing in modern American society but a masculine thing in Shogunate Japan.


Okay, here's the specific education:

Transgender is a term describing people whose gender and sex do not match (you'll often see the phrase "sex they are assigned at birth" used to highlight the fact that sex is very often not clear-cut and so the doctor just picks a sex to give the kid and chops up the genitals to match). Its opposite (people whose gender and assigned sex match) is cisgender. Transgender is sometimes used as an umbrella term for any deviance from traditional gender norms, but lately it's used only as a specific term with others listed under the Queer umbrella instead.

Transgender is not a third gender; many transgender people are men or women. Many are neither or both, but that is what makes them "third" gender (or fourth, fifth, etc.), not the fact that they are transgender.

Intersex is, well, I posted a really informative link a while ago. here
I'd really suggest reading that, but the short summary is that due to chromosomal differences or genitals that are shaped differently from the two textbook varieties, many people can have a sex that is different from the textbook male or female.

Since sex and gender are different things, intersex and transgender are two entirely unrelated things.

Hermaphrodites have fully functional male and female reproductive systems and if the condition exists in humans it is so rare that it's undocumented.


Not making assumptions as to the gender of the person you're talking to based on appearance is good behaviour. It is much closer to the opposite of offensive.

I get the feeling you've had that saved for a while and was just waiting for the right opportunity. :P

Pokemon: Encouraging jailbait since 2001!

I realized that "length of leg-covering clothing article" was also a viable method of determining gender. Females always have at least some skin on the legs showing (often quite a lot), whereas the males (almost) never do (and never nearly as much). It's especially amusing on the females that are wearing hotpants, miniskirts (or cutoffs, in one case) for no discernible reason while the equivalent guys are wearing rather bulky pants.

Which is strange, since shorts are comfy, and easy to wear.

(I should really stop quoting this line.)

Also, fun fact: Lasses are called "Miniskirt Trainers" (literally, miniskirted) in the Japanese version of the game.

Update 2: The Tiny Town of Littleroot


Birch: "All right. What's your name?"


I don't like it, but I'll stick by it. Even if it breaks TRADITION!

Birch: "Ah, okay! You're MAY who's moving to my hometown of LITTLEROOT. I get it now!"


"Your very own adventure is about to unfold. Take courage, and leap into the world of Pokémon where dreams, adventure, and friendships await! Well, I'll be expecting you later. Come see me in my Pokémon LAB."


That looks unpleasant.


Poor May. So, apparently our backstory is that our family really, REALLY wanted a girl. So badly that they kept the name May even after we were born with a penis. We're so hated, we have to ride in the back of the moving truck.
(Alternatively, this is why we're in the back of the truck)

Mom: "It must be tiring riding with our things in the moving truck. Well, this is LITTLEROOT TOWN."


How did the truck get here with no road?
Mom: "It has a quaint feel, but it seems to be an easy place to live, don't you think? And you get your own room, MAY! Let's go inside."


Mom: "The mover's Pokémon do all the work of moving us in and cleaning up after. This is so convenient! MAY, your room is upstairs. Go check it out, dear! DAD brought you a new clock to mark our move here. Don't forget to set it!"


Not bad, even if it is a little empty. Too bad there's no way to make use of all that empty space. And hey look, a Gamecube!


...and this is how you know this is a work of fiction. Seriously, how many games used this feature? How many people made decent use of it? I had ONE of the cords and that alone felt like a rip off.


I don't have any Pokémon, and probably no intent on getting one... but I have their medicine just in case. Either that or it says something else about May I don't want to know.

The clock is stopped... Better set it and start it!


Oh god I'm playing Pokémon games at this time of night and now the whole internet knows it.

Actually, this is important to events in the game, AND the emulator will be keeping track of it, so the game will track the passage of time even when I'm not running the emulator.


Mom: "Good! Everything's put away neatly! They finished moving everything in downstairs, too. Pokémon movers are so convenient! Oh, you should make sure that everything's all there on your desk."

If everything's put away neatly... why would something be missing? Actually this is the game telling me to go check the computer for that Potion, I imagine, but since I've already done that...


We'll look at that map hanging on the wall instead.


Mom: "Look! It's PETALBURG GYM! Maybe DAD will be on!"
Interviewer: "...We brought you this report from in front of PETALBURG GYM."
Mom: "Oh... It's over. I think DAD was on, but we missed him. Too bad. Oh yes. One of DAD's friends lives in town."


Oh god it's the creepy guy from the intro that was looking at how much leg I was showing!
Mom: "He lives right next door, so you should go over and introduce yourself."


So here's the town. Three buildings, and no water? This place is worse than Pallet Town or New Bark Town...


Screw it, I'm going to leave via the only exit, to the north!


Girl: "If you go outside and go in the grass, wild Pokémon will jump out! It's dangerous if you don't have your own Pokémon."
It's dangerous to go alone! Take this!

Fat Guy: "If you use a PC, you can store items and Pokémon. The power of science is staggering!"
Man: "PROF. BIRCH spends days in his LAB studying, then he'll suddenly go out in the wild to do more research... When does PROF. BIRCH spend time at home?"
Sign: "LITTLEROOT TOWN - A town that can't be shaded any hue."

Fine, I'll go next door.


What? I can't just barge into a house without being noticed?
Woman: "Oh, hello. And you are? ................... Oh, you're MAY, our new next-door neighbor! Hi! We have a daughter about the same age as you. Our daughter was excited about making a new friend. Our daughter is upstairs, I think."


Girl: "Do you already have your own Pokémon?"
...Birch has another kid? I didn't remember that.


No one's here... and what a terrible color for a Gamecube. No parent that loves their child ever bought the Orange Spice color. Anyway, oooh, Poké Ball! IT'S ALL MINE!

♪♪Rival♪♪

I thought that heroes in video games could walk into houses and steal stuff and not get caught. What's happening?!


Girl: "................... Oh, you're MAY. So your move was today. Um... I'm MAY. Glad to meet you!"

There you go. I hope it was worth it.

Girl May: "I... I have this dream of becoming friends with Pokémon all over the world. I... I heard about you, MAY, from my dad, PROF. BIRCH. I was hoping that you would be nice, MAY, and that we could be friends."

Girl May: "Eheheh... Oh, no! I forgot! I was supposed to go help Dad catch some wild Pokémon! MAY, I'll catch you later!"

Aide: "The PROF's away on fieldwork. Ergo, he isn't here. Oh, let me explain what fieldwork is. It is to study things in the natural enviroment, like fields and mountains, instead of a laboratory. The PROF isn't one for doing desk work. He's the type of person who would rather go outside and experiance things than read about them here."

Well, now what?


Girl: "There are scary Pokémon outside! I can hear their cries! I want to go see what's going on, but I don't have any Pokémon... Can you go see what's happening for me?"

Well, here's a change from the original Emerald, at least. Rather than the old Hoenn trio of Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip, we get to choose from Treecko, Cyndaquil, or Squirtle. Given my history on the forum, I have a feeling this is going to be a TOUGH CHOICE. But I'll let you decide all the same. You know the drill, people!

This is about as confusing as it gets, for this update. BUT AT WHAT COST?!

It is kind of a tough choice.

Obligatory Cran vote: Go Cyndaquil or go home!

But for my money's worth, I'd say Treecko is the best of the three. Though, it all really depends on what Mons are available later.

We already used Cyndaquil in a previous LP, so I pick either Treeko or Squirtle.

Probably Treeko.

Clearly the correct answer is the awesome turtle.

That said, all three of those are good.

Squirtle

The fire one. Burn everything.

There's only one Pokémon in that batch that can pierce the heavens.



Granted, my team mostly relied on my grass starter and my Ralts/Gardevoir, but yeah.

Pick Treecko. Capture the first pokémon you see. Put Treecko away forever and pretend your new capture is your starter.

I put forth my vote towards Squirtle!
