Title: People Read Books?
Description: Literature and all that other stuff.

MFD - March 12, 2005 11:04 PM (GMT)
OK, I'm boring and spent my spring break rereading Harry Potterm, all five of them. I started Monday and finished yesterday. I have a few predictions for Half-Blood Prince.

The prince is Voldemort. Dumbledore refers to him as a half-blood in the end of Phoenix.

New Defense professor... I'm thinking Tonks. And then Snape in Book 7.

Also, um... Dark Tower, what the fuck? Am I the only one a bit disappointed in the ending? Then again, it is Stephen King's opus, so...

Red - March 12, 2005 11:19 PM (GMT)
Thats some damn good speculation right there.

Lupin was my favorite DatDA teacher. followed by FakeMoody.

Why do you think tonks will be the next DA teacher?

Knight - March 12, 2005 11:23 PM (GMT)
FakeMoody... oh my. My favorite scene in the series will forever be "Malfoy, the amazing, bouncing ferret". ^_^

Red - March 12, 2005 11:24 PM (GMT)
yeah. thats one of the best parts of book 4

Zap Rowsdower - March 13, 2005 12:24 AM (GMT)
No, the entire series. If that doesn't make it into the movie, someone WILL die.

MechaV - March 13, 2005 12:38 AM (GMT)
Lupin was always my favorite too, but only because of the whole werewolf thing.

I STILL haven't finished Order Of The Phoenix, it's been sitting on my shelf for well over two years.

Black gets eighty-sixed, doesn't he? >-> <.<

Zap Rowsdower - March 13, 2005 12:39 AM (GMT)
He disapears past a curtian that none can return from. That book came out midnight between a friday and a saturday, right? Well I finished it Sunday at four PM.

MechaV - March 13, 2005 12:41 AM (GMT)
He just disappears behind a curtain? Ah man, I was expecting him to go out with more of a bang.

Zap Rowsdower - March 13, 2005 12:42 AM (GMT)
I think ol' JKR was leaving room for a possible return.

MFD - March 13, 2005 01:01 AM (GMT)
Spoiler, but MechaV is asking for it...

The afterlife is behind the curtain, if you pay attention to Loony and Harry talking near the end.

Nonono, Knight. Best scene in the series is Fred 'n' George's Great Escape.

As for Tonks... um... I think she is going to get a larger role. She's an Auror, so she's obviously qualified... and having another member of the Order at Hogwarts would be useful. It's either her, Shacklebolt, or someone we haven't met yet.

Also, am I the only one who thinks JK had a certain Scottish actor in mind for Moody in the next movie?

Picture Sean Connery delivering Moody's lines. It's GOLD I tell you.

Zap Rowsdower - March 13, 2005 01:03 AM (GMT)
A live person in the afterlife? Its OBVIOUS that he'll somehow come back! Or not. The Great Escape? Heh, forgot about that one. Yeah, thats better. Actually that whole section of the book was funny, mainly due to the aftereffects of the Great Escape.
And why rule out an unknown as the DADA teacher?

No, not comedy gold. Platinum.

MFD - March 13, 2005 03:44 AM (GMT)
Come on guys! Connery growling, "I expect what you're not aware of would fill several books, Dursley."

I'm ruling out an unknown because, well... there's already a lengthy cast, and the last THREE DADA profs appeared again, two of them with major roles.

I'm just sad they'll never get the great escape quite right on the big screen. Unless they introduce Peeves in the next movie.

Ou des - March 13, 2005 07:50 AM (GMT)
Connery? Moody? MFD genius! They must do that.

Also I like your theory about the DADA teachers. But I think that it's more likely that Harry is the half-blood prince. Also it took you long enough to get around to reading them :P

Am I the only one who thinks that quidditch is the worst part of the series?

Big McStrongmuscle - March 13, 2005 07:51 AM (GMT)
Yes and no. It has a lot of potential for microcosm and portent. It just doesn't use more than half of it.

Glorfindel - March 13, 2005 07:52 AM (GMT)
I obviously haven't paid much attention to the movies (last one I saw was Chamber of Secrets) but they DIDN"T PUT PEEVES IN!

Bah, poor movie license on that part.

Maybe they'll just have a random ghost for him though. And I don't think Sirius is coming back either. Death is kind of permanent you know. But he might come back as a ghost.

The quiditch? How so?

Big McStrongmuscle - March 13, 2005 07:59 AM (GMT)
There's all sorts of room to use Quidditch as a microcosm, as a sort of looking-glass for what's going on in the book. Say, Slytherin is up to some foul play in the books; they also find some new trick along a similar vein to use in Quidditch. Or for portent - something Harry did is about to backfire deliciously ironically - in Quidditch, he does something that ends up helping the other team.

Ou des - March 13, 2005 08:01 AM (GMT)
I don't care though. It's just so damn boring.

Edit: I usually just skip all the quidittch parts.

Big McStrongmuscle - March 13, 2005 08:02 AM (GMT)
It's because she doesn't do any of that.

Red - March 13, 2005 08:07 AM (GMT)
anyone else suffering the eternally long wait for "A Feast For Crows" by George R.R. Martin?

Big McStrongmuscle - March 13, 2005 08:08 AM (GMT)
Also, any Stephen Brust fans on this venue?

Ou des - March 13, 2005 08:13 AM (GMT)
Never heard of it.

But if anyone wants a really great Star Wars v Star Trek fanfic go here. It's in the fanfic section and the title is conquest. I blame GJ for not plugging it earlier. (Seriously read this if you even only like the series' a little)

Also Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. Read those.

Grandmaster Jogurt - March 13, 2005 08:16 AM (GMT)
You linked the main page, Ou...

Click Fanfiction, then Conquest to find the fic.

Ou des - March 13, 2005 08:24 AM (GMT)
Well all the better if they read the whole site GJ :P

Any other Sword of Truth series readers? Terry Goodkind's the author, I think... Anyway, I stopped reading it around The Blood of the Fold, because it seemed to be the books were getting rediculously formulaic.. Richard gets kidnapped/stolen/blackmailed, goes on some grand mission by himself where he convinces people to join him or kills them all, comes back stronger then ever, while Kahlen leads the forces into war again and again...

Carmichael Micaalus - March 13, 2005 09:08 AM (GMT)
Bah, I say! I like the Sword of Truth series! However, I'm easy to please. Plus, a 7~900+ page book is always a good thing for me.

I just picked up The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy today... it has all five books in it, along with a bonus story. anyway, since a lot of you have been talking about it and have said how good it is, I figured I should check it out... plus it was only twenty bucks.

Red - March 13, 2005 09:18 AM (GMT)
Car you got ripped off. I got my big blue hitchhikers book for 5 dollars on clearance at barnes and noble.

also do yourself a favor and pick up A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. its a good read. and about 900 pages big. Way better than Sword of Truth series.

Only now have you gotten that? I've had it for almost a year now and i still think that the entire series put into a single book with a bonus story is a gift from heaven above.

Beware the karmageddon*, mortals...

*Not in the english dictionary obviously, only posted here because it was a good idea.

Just Jon - March 13, 2005 09:28 AM (GMT)
I still have to read said books someday.. I've really got to get around to reading..

And I liked the series at first too Car, but it just seemed like they were doing the same thing over and over with slightly different secondary characters, and I got bored...

Red - March 13, 2005 09:32 AM (GMT)
not to mention the horrible Pillars of creation tangent Goodkind went off on.

Glorfindel - March 13, 2005 09:34 AM (GMT)
Yes yes Ou, if anyone wants a definitive understanding on the history of Middle-Earth, the Silmarillion is a must read. Hard to get into because it reads like a history book sometimes and to have a total understanding you have to read it a few times through but a must read.

Anyone read the Legends of Dune series yet? I've read The Butlerian Jihad and the Machine Crusade but I've yet to find the Battle of Corrin . . . As you can tell I love the Dune Universe and I can't wait for the sequel to Chapterhouse Dune to be finished.

Carmichael Micaalus - March 13, 2005 10:23 AM (GMT)
That's actually where I got this one, Redmage; it was at Barnes and Noble. Ah well. I'm always getting ripped off, so it doesn't matter.

Drekal - March 13, 2005 10:57 AM (GMT)
Red Dwarf. If you liked Hitchikers Guide, there is a good chance that you'll like Red Dwarf too.

Ou des - March 13, 2005 12:16 PM (GMT)
Is that a book?

Just Jon - March 13, 2005 01:11 PM (GMT)
I thought it was a comedy act.. A BRITISH comedy act...

MechaV - March 13, 2005 02:57 PM (GMT)
Dang Brits.

Big McStrongmuscle - March 13, 2005 04:10 PM (GMT)
Hmm...I like Terry Goodkind. He's not one of my favorite favorite authors, but I head me down to the library anytime he puts out a new book. The only one I really didn't like was Pillars of Creation.

But Dune? The first book is one of the three best sf novels of all time. After that, they sink fast...

And Hitchhiker's Guide?

Just Jon - March 13, 2005 04:13 PM (GMT)
I should really check out that "library" thing sometime.. But I'm always here in my free time! When would I read a book?!

No kind of atmosphere
I'm all alone,
More or less"

I am currently reading the ultimate hithikers guide to the galaxy and the 3rd book to boot. I got it from my library which then ordered it from another library.
