Welcome to your new world

The auditorium/gym goes wild as the screen dies down, a pair of teachers rolling it away.

A man comes forward, in his dark suit, holding up the new device; a part of the school's latest budget, a cell phone for all students and teachers.

"And it's more than a cell phone!" The man's voice is exuberant, infectious with enthusiasm! "It handles emails, your ID, even the new CredSimp technology- you'll never need to carry spare change again! And each student here is getting one!"

The gym goes wild again- more for the free shinies than anything!

"Your class schedules, your homework, even the cafeteria special can all be accessed from the touch of a but-"

Thwap.

The red, splotchy mess of tomato on the mans face slowly slips, falling to the floor with a loud splat. The black and silver device in his hand falls alongside, flipping open on the floor.

The gym goes wild, some with anger, some fear, others laughter. A few kids, the political activists of the bunch, yell out slogans- "Our Privacy, not your Yen!" "Suck it, Man!"
And such as that.

The teachers rush to calm down the students, and they're shortly removed... even as the suited businessman finishes wiping his face, picking up the device... and holding it high! "Not even scratched! This thing could get run over by a car and STILL get film!"

Applause and cheer fills the place!

It's a mere half hour later, though it seems like forever- the waiting in line is always roughest, but now you've got them- your very own DTT's.

The entirety of the school is before you. It's a nice, sunny day out... And with school and the assembly done, it's all yours, entire city before you. What's the plan?

Alleycat

Another long, long fall day. You hoofed it around downtown for awhile, doin' your things, but it's getting close to dinner time; so you've made it over to a place you know, sometimes gives you a leftover pizza or the like. Better'n a garbage can meal.

As you head on your way, you spot an electronics store- people going wild out front.

With school out for the day, Tybalt starts walking to track practice. Of course, he's playing with his new whatchamajoozit the entire way, checking out the various functions, and seeing if it was really as awesome as the dude in the suit made it out to be.

Hmmm... *sniff sniff* That doesn't smell like food. But if it is, I need to get it before all those people do! Otherwise it'll be gone!

Alleycat walks over to the crowd, trying to see what's going on, and if there's food involved.

Aaron wanders off to nowhere in particular, following the crowd while examining the shinies

Tybalt

It has EVERYTHING. Seriously. It even has your track schedule and a fresh email account set up.

The track team is all set and rarin' to go! Or they would be, if they weren't playing with the new doohickeys.

Alleycat

They're giving out FREE cell phones! Something called a DTT...

They seem to have a lot, too, one of the store employees pushing one into your hands, motioning you out of the line.

Aaron

It's SHINY. Black, with sliver edges and a high-res screen; kinda small, but still better than that on an IPod. Little keyboard on it, too, that just slides down.

A... cell phone? I've seen people use this... They talk into it. I have no reason to, but... does someone actually want to talk to this alleycat? Who would that be? Well, I guess I'll start talking...

"Mya... h-hello? Hello? Does someone want to t-talk to this Alleycat?"

Alleycat did not bother pressing the buttons first.

It's no good. This thing is for normal people who have people to talk to. Not for alley cats like me. Not for me. But, it is super shiny... I'll put it with my shiny collection! And then, maybe I can trade it for food!

...well, why wait? I'm close to the place where they gave me food last time! Maybe the nice person will give me food this time, too. Maybe he won't, but maybe he will! Maybe I'll get a whole pizza!

With that, Alleycat headed to that nice person's restaurant.

Well the schedule thing is mildly creepy. Anyway, Tybalt put his whatchamabob away for now, and looks around for the coach.

Aaron slides the keyboard down
Free stuff is awesome! I hope it has Snake.

The store manager spots you! And ushers you out quickly- apparently, it's a busy day from all the nearby customers! But he does give you a small bag of cheezy garlic bread~

Tybalt

The coach is trying to get everyone's attention! But the Sheeple- er, students are a bit preoccupied with texting each other. FROM FIVE FEET AWAY.

Aaron

It doesn't have Snake.

It has THREE VERSIONS of Snake. And it has Pac-man, too.

Oh god yes
Aaron pockets the phone and looks for someplace comfortable to play

Tybalt is suddenly struck with an idea! He pulls the phone back out, and checks to see if it already has the numbers of the rest of the track team.

"T-Thank you!"
And now this Alleycat has food.
Alleycat wolfed down the cheesy garlic bread, not chewing nearly as much as he should.

...I'm still hungry... But, that does feel a bit better. I want more food. And I don't wanna dumpster-dive today. It'll ruin the taste of the good food I ate today!

...But where can I get food?

Well, normal people need food too... So, if I go to a place where there's a lot of normal people... then I'll find lots of food!

...and if I just find one person, then it might be safe to make him give me food...

...but where's a place with lots of people?

Alleycat wandered around, seeking out places with lots of people.

Aaron

By now, the crowd has mostly dispersed outside and off to wherever, leaving your stoner ass out in the middle of the street. There's a few good places nearby, though- an old convenience store, a small alley, and of course back into the school. Well, except that the teachers are already locking the doors so they can go home.

Tybalt

It has the number of EVERYONE in the school. Your track team has it's very own group- and there's several advertisements on the side, for good shoes and sportswear.

Alleycat

There's a bunch of people leaving a building a few streets away!

-- It's a school!

Excellent. Tybalt sends a message to everyone else along the lines of "You dorks done texting each other from two feet away, or should we just give up on practice for today?"

Alleycat had no idea what a school was, but he remembered people asking him if he shouldn't be in it. But, since he couldn't read the sign, this was just another building to him, and that memory had nothing to do with anything.

People are leaving... is the food all gone? No. Normal people usually leave some food.

With that, he entered the building everybody else was exiting.

Aaron's stomach gurgled as he headed towards the convenience store. He had skipped lunch.

And Breakfast.

Tybalt

You receive a response ten seconds later-

... It's from the coach.

Alleycat

Unfortunately, the doors have been locked from that side...

Aaron

The employee at the register is fooling around on his cell phone, barely glancing up long enough to say hello!

Tybalt just shakes his head in disgust and decides to run home. Maybe everyone else will have gotten over how admittedly awesome the phones were by tomorrow.

Aaron murmurs unintelligibly about cellphone zombies and heads home, deciding to raid the cupboards

Alleycat frowns, sighs, then leaves, walking aimlessly on his eternal search for food...

Hmm... I should look for normal people leaving this place. They might have food. It'd be better if they're alone... No, maybe it'd be better if they were together. Thinking about it's not gonna get me anywhere.
