Between this and his "How do I stay alive" question, Golbez has some pretty awesome villain lines.

Had to look up what the term "Dead Man's Hand" was. Then I giggled when I realized Golbez "Ace ace 'n' eights" Fusoya.

(Say it out loud)

Golbez can't actually kill FuSoYa, though. Drop him to 0 HP, sure, but as far as I can tell, he isn't Omega-infected.

I think he could kill him. That bolt doesn't strike me as an in battle bolt but more of a bit of cut scene lightning. And people can die in cut scenes.

Yeah, but can Golbez generate a cutscene to order?

Plus, consider: The only (named) person to actually die in FFIV died from casting Meteor without enough MP.

Golbez's presence creates cutscenes. How many times in FFIV did you see Golbez when it wasn't a cutscene (or boss battle)?

Exactly what I was going to say. Golbez is a walking cutscene. You have to be with that music.

Are Spoony and I the only ones to remember Anna?

Anyway: yep, Golbez is a walking cutscene. When I was watching the RPG Dueling League back in the day, the officials DQed Golbez because, for the one (actual in-game) battle he was in, they couldn't determine at what point the battle started. (Having Cecil et. al.'s attack and Golbez' defelction of same along with the whole Shadow Dragon thing be an actual cutscene in the DS version would've helped a whole lot.)

Which begs the question of, assuming Golbez can cause cutscene death, how long can FuSoYa be "dead" before a Phoenix Down won't work on him?

Ok, ok, Life Potion. The question itself stands.

I don't think cutscene death works unless Alex is actively playing the game.

I'd think it works just like an NPC girl's shortcuts work without Alex there. The cutscenes all have a perfectly good reason to happen inside the game world without saying 'a programmer did it,' it is just that the reason is narrative, not stardust and chance based.

So Golbez caused 2 for 2 deaths of named characters, sort of. Anna blocked arrows offscreen, but Edward knew Golbez's name. Her father died from his own rage fueling magic too powerful for his body; a karmic death, except for heroes, and also it probably fueled Zeromus's hatred battery, which did not run out until Cecil forgave Golbez... um, what was I talking about?

Sir Donald, it depends on the need of the story. FuSoYa is kind of boring, but he knows about the true nature of the moon, and why it is filled with sleeping peeps and when to wake them. Also I think he is made of pudding.

Fusoya is so boring that they even write him out of the official sequel because he has nothing to do.

Spriteless: if he's made of pudding, then he'd be immune to melee weapons but extremely susceptible to spells, making him dead now.

Anyway, if he is dead now, I wonder if this Trope applies?

Well, I guess he is Tellah part two...

Fair enough about Anna, but I think you guys are missing the actual point. Both of the actual deaths in FFIV were written in by the programmers (and even then the characters only went into some kind of limbo, because Anna appeared later on to Edward, and Tellah appeared during the run-up to the Zeromus fight).

There's no question that FuSoYa is down for the count, though. He's "dead", in the sense that he's not doing anything till someone gives him a Life potion.

Writers. The programmers did not decide to kill 'em, they were given a script by writers.

People can also cure outside of battle. Rydia cured a bunch of damage after Golbez and Kain cutscene KO'd the party, and Rosa cured Edge after Rubicant lit him on fire. So either he needs potion or healing spell, or he can be a ghost.

Ghost, eh?

"Cecil! Cecil!"

"Uncle FuSoYa?"

"You will go to the Chronos System."

"Chronos system?"

"There you will learn from Gaspar. The Guru who instructed me. And by instructed, I mean gave me my general orders."

Cecil's currently paralyzed. Can't exactly go gate jumping.
