Would you be able to trust your fellow players..., ...with managing mechanics in-game?

Would you be able to trust your fellow player with determining a matter of probability (dice roll, coin flip, etc.) in-game if, by lying it could give them an unfair advantage?
Yes, I understand that the GM can't be around to update constantly, and by having the players manage these aspects of the game it will allow for a faster paced, fuller game. [ 3 ]  [25.00%]
No, while I trust my fellow players, the temptation is there to abuse an in-game mechanic for personal benefit. [ 9 ]  [75.00%]

Poll for potential upcoming game, just trying to tweak the mechanics with opinions.

To clarify what the above means, here's an example:

You're in a battle with another player, and in said battle there is a probability that you can be disarmed (determined with a dice roll 1-6). Would you be able to trust the player you're fighting to make the dice-roll and be honest with the results, or would you be afraid they would lie to give them an unfair advantage in battle?

The advantage to putting this mechanic in the player's hands is to allow for faster updating of the game; game slow-down being (in my opinion) one of the main things that kills interest in an RP.

Feel free to discuss /ask questions!

Speaking as a GM, and as someone's who has watched RP on this board since it's inception...

I really think that there should always be someone who is in charge. It's simply too easy for little disputes like this to escalate.

I've often seen disputes over dice-rolls even in person. Having the rolls hidden is just asking for trouble.

I'd rig a blind dice roll on a more shameful day. Goes without saying I wouldn't trust anyone else with one, save the GM. Anything strictly stat-based should either have a mediator or an online system of some sort.

New question, if this mechanic were in the hands of players to deterimine, but 'victim' players can request the GM to intervene (i.e., if they want them to handle the dice roll while sacraficing game momentum), would that work for anyone?

Sure, but nine times out of ten, the 'victims' will be requesting GM intervention, so that begs the question...

Why bother?

Unless it was PvE rather than PvP, but in that case the GM is controlling what the player is fighting and would probably be doing the random chances anyways.
