Well yeah Alex. Good things just don't happen to you. Ever.

Let's be honest, this isn't the worst possible outcome here.
Although I agree it could have been better for him. -------------------- Well, you know how college is. You're sitting there in your dorm room wearing nothing but your panties and a t-shirt that's far too tight, doing your advanced calculus homework, and your super-hot roommate who you've got a huge crush on comes in and says that the engineering student down the hall needs some help with a practical example of the benefits of flexibility in architecture, and the next thing you know you're making the beast with twelve backs and you've somehow increased a bust size.

Maybe he knew that planning out what to do with his time out would cause Videoland or the Sovereign to unfreeze him.

I like the unpausing effect.

Alex only gets to spend years looping in time near a save point. O____O

ok, who here expected something bad to happen as soon as Alex thought of using the time frozen to work things out? *raises hand* Now, who enjoys watching bad things happen to Alex? *raises hand, remembering him first facing Gato and laughing so very, very hard* Ok, now who here hopes to see lots more bad things happen to Alex? *raises hand, thinking of the Date Captain SNES contest*

It seems I must not have paid attention. What is that sound effect? Is it related to the cartoon? I vaguely remember that Captain NES had a time limit on his pause, although I remember them rationalizing it in the show with batteries, and that's clearly my imagination because if I'd seen that when I was a kid, the part I'd remember would have been how wrong the cartoon got the controller gadget. Maybe it's just a generic "time running out" sound effect, but those never existed for Nintendo hardware, right? Game Boys use flashing lights... Or was there a beep on the earlier ones? |

Some games have an auto-unpause. It's just whatever she used. The paying attention bit is the "nothing good EVER happens to Alex" observation.

I don't think I ever played a game with an auto-unpause...

The pause is failing not because of any specific game mechanics, but because Alex is convinced that nothing good can ever happen to him, and subconsciously making it true.
Either that or it required her active effort (or at least her being conscious so as to serve as a 'channel') to maintain the pause, but I think I like the first explanation better. -------------------- Live and learn - or die and teach by example.
