My very off-the-cuff answer, the Sovereign or one of her avatars (that is, a Touched).
The "strange little girl" delayed Maria (there may also have been the intent to delay the wedding, by forcing the heroes to go rescue Maria, thrown off by the fact that they didn't wait), thus Ultros had the opportunity to kidnap her. -------------------- Please do not "help" me by merging threads I make into the ridiculously large ones that seem like they have everything but the kitchen sink related to that topic.

The strange girl reminds me of the Shard bearer.

See, I thought Touched, until she started shrieking like a veteran princess. I think she's clean. By the way, I like the inversion of the opera-house plan, here. This time, Maria is Celes's decoy. I love it.
Ya know, he meets Celes all of twice or three times in the entire game, provided you take her to the second and third time. First time, she's acting the part of Maria. Second time, airship battle. Third time, coliseum. He never really gets to see much of Celes. |

I'm not sure the Sovereign could or would speak without purple text... Maria's text was white before she even appeared on-panel.

This may sound a bit crazy, but I think Chupon is not in love with Ultros.

In any case, it's not anyone in Celes's form. Maria just happens to look a lot like Celes. It's perhaps FFVI's most suspiciously convenient plot point. It just so happens that Celes looks like the woman that the man with the only airship in the world wants to abduct.

Maria has purple hair ties, but Celes has blue. This obviously means she has some as of yet unidentified version of being touched. Or she's only slightly touched. Or her only talents are getting knocked out by more important characters and singing in cut-scenes, so this is the manifestation of her powers.
Or she's only being used a little for now. -------------------- At any given moment it's hard to remember the headspace of every other given moment. But I live in space a lot.

No, I thought that too for a minute. And, no she isn't royalty, but it has not yet been established that a "royal" form is a necessity and not merely a preference.
How would we know if we haven't even seen her? Also, for the shard bearer to be in this world would require a hithertofore unknown gate between there and Nexus. Wouldn't you have thought that we would have a blink-and-you'll-miss-it type of reference to such a gate before now? EDIT: That "cat" is a fur cloak that's shaped like a cat. I didn't notice the purple hair-ties at first. That is odd.

If we go with the little girl as being an agent of the Sovereign (such as it is), she could have been touched (thus the purple hair ties), but given that Maria basically never appears in the game, it might not have worked right.

Or, y'know, it could just be a matter of personal preference as to the hair ties. Geez, I know there are very few coincidences in Videoland, but realize that not *everything* means something.
