 Hi,

I am fairly new to cycling, got a road bike a few weeks ago and have enjoyed bobbing around Cardiff on it for the last few weeks. But a smashed bike computer and an ill timed puncture the following day are making me look into a club. In all honesty am a little apprehensive about the group rides, speeds etc and holding people up.

Every person who i have spoken to about clubs has spoken really highly of you guys and I just wondered what the best way forward for me would be. I work in Bristol and commute so get back into the Thornhill area for about 6.30-6.45 on a good day so i think i might be a bit useless for the flats sessions etc.

Really just need some advice as i would love to start building up the miles on the bike.

Thanks

Laura

The best introduction would be a Sunday ride - don't worry about holding people up - the slow group is there for beginners and nobody gets left behind. It's very rare for any new rider to be that slow, and anyway, you'll find you can rider faster and longer than you can on your own. Without even thinking about it. Or try a Saturday ride at Rhiwbina - there's usually a new face or two there and the ride is usually only 90 minutes - 2 hours.

Thanks for the response. Will definitely consider the club ride but the Saturday ride might be a good plan as well.

cheers

Hi Laura,

i'm also new to cycling and i went out on the club ride two weeks ago. it was my first group ride, ever. the sunday club ride was great. i went with the slow group and found it very enjoyable and even though i struggled a bit on the hills everyone slowed down/waited at the top till the whole group rejoins. i managed to stay with the group most times and the average speed was about 22km/h. its quite a social ride which was nice. no one gets left behind and there'll be someone who'll happily ride along with you if you are towards the back.

everyone was really friendly and made me feel welcome. it was pretty fun riding in the group and you pick up the calls pretty quickly and the other riders are there to look out for you. it takes a little getting used to riding close to someone else but worth the company. i'd much rather ride in a group now, than by myself.

anyways, that's my 2 cents, for what its worth...

Pete
