In my first couple of recaps I only have sound bytes/info on those that made it through and those I really liked..... I will be editing these later to bring them up to par like the recaps on group 3, 4 and the wild-card

(steph I hope this is okay I er... didn't wait for the green light.... if you don't approve feel free to delete!)

First up we have the very first person to make it through on Canadian Idol..... a man by the name of Joshua Sellers He sang "Somewhere Out There" which I'm sure most Claymates are familiar with. He actually did sing it in a similar style as Clay did and while he's not as good, he was among the best of group 1.

Presenting...... Joshua!

Here, my eager friends, is his song clip.
Somewhere Out There -- mp3

The second competitor to make it through was Brandy Callahan she sang "The Greatest Love Of All" and did a stand-up job of it. I found her slightly breathy during the song and felt that there was another who deserved to make it through more than Brandy did.

Heeeeeerrreeeee's Brandy!

And this is what she sounds like
The Greatest Love Of All --mp3

I think that in group one a girl by the name of Kyla Sandulak should've gotten through. She sang a very jazzy song (I really like vocal jazz) and sounded so unique that I think she was the second best in the group. I'm hoping she gets called back for the wildcard show.

A treat for the eyes

And a treat for the ears

Thanks for this Kiara!!! Don't hurt me, Claymates...but I like Josh's version of Somewhere Out There.

I have a question that I guess will be answered in this recap thread....how were the wildcards decided? smile.gif

Yay group 1! They were very good.... but group two was even better!

Group two brought about the Clash of the Titans (quite literally --> one of the girls being named Liz Titan)

To make it through with the highest number of votes in this round was.............................

Kalan Porter! (*psst* 60 of those votes were mine laugh.gif *yay*)
My pick happens to be a boy of 18 from Alberta by the name of Kalan Porter. He is in the league of Tamyra and Clay.... and that's not something I'll say easily. I think he could be an Idol that would put CI on the map worldwide!

For those of you who don't know him!
this is what he looks like

user posted image

and THIS is what he sounds like it's from the top 32 (right click and save target as)
Lady -- mp3

I was choked up when I heard him sing...

Second (and well deserved) was Kaleb Simmons He sang the song Water Runs Dry.... and had such a brilliantly unique tone to his voice that I think he definitely deserved to be in the top 10. There's only one problem. He has the personality of a dead fish most of the time. Even when he's performing. Although to listen to him he sounds like he's emoting.... when you look at him, there's no feeling at all. In Kaleb's case I agree with Simon "I prefer you with my eyes closed"!

He looks like this

and sings like this Water Runs Dry --mp3

Another girl who I really liked (though not as much as Kalan and Kaleb) was Liz Titan who sang beautifully.

Here she is

And thus she sings....
I Have Nothing -- mp3

:claps: YAY Canadians! Of the top four I think my picks for Idol are, in order

1. Kalan
2. Kaleb
3. Joshua
4. Brandy.

*whew* and that's my recap!

Luv Ya

no problem Nat, still have to get to the top 10s.... will probably get to them tomorrow.

The wildcards were decided in the same way as the other groups.... Canada voted and the top two contestants were accepted.

From now on I shall be posting every contestant's media as well as the judges comments (the latter straight from Canadian Idol's website Canadian Idol) If I think the singer is either really special or really horrible I will post my own comments in italics.

Annnnd here we go!

Group 3

user posted image

Top Row (from left to right): Andrew Broderick, Valerie Jalbert, Jerrica Santos, Diana Archer
Middle Row (from left to right): Bernard Quilala, Theresa Sokyrka, Constant Bernard
Bottom Row: Jacob Hoggard

Constant Bernard

First on the stage, Bernard crooned to audiences with the song, "Me and Mrs. Jones." His soulful rendition of the Billy Paul classic soothed the critical ears of judges Farley Flex and Jake Gold who said, "That was by far the best performance you've ever done." Sass Jordan, who chose to quote her daughter to best express her sentiment, quipped, "I like it but I don't like it." Zack Werner also agreed with Jordan's daughter's now-famous words.
Me and Mrs. Jones
I thought this was pretty good.... it was soulful

Jerrica Santos
The youngest singer in the group, Santos' song oozed adult contemporary with Barbra Streisand's "Evergreen" - a choice that surprised and impressed the judges. "I would've never expected that from you. I thought that was really quite remarkable," Werner observed. Gold, on the other hand, noticed something else aside from Santos' vocals. "I like the little quiver at the bottom lip at the end there."
Evergreen

Andrew Broderick
Taking Stevie Wonder's "Knocks Me Off My Feet," Broderick added his own personal touches to the song with some fancy footwork on stage. Jordan thought his dancing was "wonderful to watch" though the singing was "not fantastic." Werner wasn't moved by any of Broderick's vocal manoeuvres and thought it was a tough song choice. Gold and Flex, however, enjoyed his performance and agreed he "rose to the occasion."
Knocks Me Off My Feet

Valerie Jalbert
Dressed in an evening gown, Jalbert delivered the power ballad, "Open Arms" with a powerful vocal performance. Unfortunately, neither the dress nor the voice made an impression on Werner who emphasized the singer had "zero charisma." Gold, however, was delighted with Jalbert's appearance and though he didn't like her song, thought she "did it proud." Flex and Jordan were both pleased with Jalbert's efforts.
[URL=http://www.idolonline.org/requests/CanadianIdol2/ValerieJalbert-OpenArms.mp3]Open Arms[URL]
*groan* I cringed listening to this.... she butchered Clay's song!

Bernard Quilala
Quilala's high notes didn't guarantee high praises from all the judges. Though he sang Jon Secada's "Angel" without any noticeable snags, the singer was slammed by Gold who had an issue with the song -- he hadn't heard it before. But, Flex and Jordan came to Quilala's rescue and praised him for doing an "incredible job." Werner, however, had a problem with his star power, which got a zero ranking, and reprimanded him for being "stiff as a board."
Angel
I actually thought he was one of the best performers of the group

Diane Archer
Archer's "Nobody Does it Better" could've gotten better reviews but according to Jordan the performance wasn't up to par with Archer's abilities. "Overall, it wasn't what I know you can do," Jordan said. Werner -- urging the singer to "call Lloyd's of London and insure (her) legs for two or three million dollars" -- praised Archer more for her personality than for her singing. Gold, however, was sold on her performance.
Nobody Does It Better

And finally the last two contestants....Jacob Hoggard and Theresa Sokyrka these were the two who made it through to the next round!

user posted image

Jacob Hoggard
Rocking the Idol boat, Hoggard chose Billy Joel's "Only the Good Die Young" to show off his front-man rocker style. With his trademark lip ring, the singer bounced around on stage, putting his own spin to the 70's tune. His performance hooked the judges, with Jordan calling him "a bonafide star." Meanwhile, Werner affirmed, "The French love Jerry Lewis, Canada's gotta love you, dude." Gold said Hoggard made their name proud while Flex hoped this "most anticipated performer" keeps it up.
Only The Good Die Young
I really need to find a vid for this.... it basically consists of Jacob jumping around onstage.... I think I found his antics a little too over the top, they turned me off! The song itself is pretty good.

Theresa Sokyrka =)
Slowing it down a few notches, Sokyrka scatted her way into the judges' glowing hearts with her take on the jazz tune, "Summertime." Werner named her as his favourite singer of the last two years and Gold described Sokyrka as "the class of this class." Flex affirmed, "There is soul in Saskatchewan" while Jordan was all praises for the singer's voice. But before leaving the stage, Werner gave a stern warning to Sokyrka: "This is a long show. Don't you dare choke."
Summertime
I LOVE HER! *Okay I'm biased*.... this was way better than Fantasia's imo.... she's such a classy jazzy singer... I really do hope she wins!

Group 4
user posted image

From left to right: Danielle Falco, Jermaine Richards, Jason Greeley, Becky Abbot, Brock Groombridge, Manoah Hartmann

Brock Groombridge
Though the judges seemed to agree on the 16-year-old's cute factor and infectious presence, Groombridge's performance of "Beauty and the Beast" did not impress the panel. Jake Gold observed, "A Disney character singing Disney songs...It's just syrup, man." Farley Flex also didn't feel moved by the song and though Sass Jordan didn't comment on the singer's voice, she attempted to rescue Groombridge and said, "From a heart standpoint, it pours out of your eyes."
Beauty and the Beast
It was awful to listen to!

Danielle Falco
According to Jordan, Falco's intense delivery of "Think Twice" may have saved her performance, which Flex believed showed some deficiencies. However, it was not enough to meet the other judges' expectations. Zack Werner told the 18-year-old she was out of her league, and then added, "That was atrocious." Gold, who took the diplomatic route remarked that her "voice does not sound as strong" as he's heard it before.
Think Twice

Jason Greeley
With an advance warning from Jordan, "You are definitely my type...Now they're gonna rip you," Greeley braced for the worst from the three male judges. Werner, who thought his rendition of Bryan Adams' "Heaven" lacked intensity, quipped, "It was a cheese fest before and you're the ham." While Flex agreed the passion in his performance was missing, he thought he sang well enough to move on. Gold also hoped Greeley would make it to the next round.
Heaven
Loved his voice but thought he had no personality onstage

Becky Abbott
Performing "Moondance", Abbott sent the judges over the moon with her soulful interpretation of Van Morrison's classic tune. Jordan admitted being surprised by the singer's delivery, calling it "fantastic". Flex was also impressed, especially with Abbott's tone, and Gold was amazed at her ability to make the song her own. Werner, whose face and tone seeped of seriousness said, "You're a serious, serious singer. Serious."
=( can't upload mp3
It just wasn't my cuppa tea!

Jermaine Richards
Plummeting from the moon, the judges' comments took a downward turn after hearing Richards' version of "Endless Love." Gently ripping into the singer, Jordan was almost apologetic for what she had to say: "The singing was really awful." Werner, however, had no reservations when he said, "Somebody had to choke and, unfortunately, it was you." Gold couldn't help but agree with the others, while Flex pointed out that Richards missed 90 per cent of the notes in the song.
Endless Love
How on EARTH did he make it this far?

Ted Senecal
The last performer of the night and of the Top 32, Senecal went out with a bang with his song, "Georgia on My Mind." Idolizing Harry Connick, Jr., the apprentice pipe fitter wooed the judges with his crooner sound. "You sang it like the man that you are and I give you total respect," Werner congratulated. Both Flex and Gold applauded Senecal's soulful rendition, while Jordan thanked the singer for his performance. "You started singing and I forgot the show even existed," the judge remarked.
Georgia On My Mind
I loved this! He looks like a muppet though, but sings with so much soul.

The next two singers are the ones that made it through.... Shane Wiebe and Manoah Hartmann
user posted image
(from left to right: Host Ben Mulroney, Manoah Hartmann, Shane Weibe, and runner up Jason Greeley)

Shane Wiebe
Singing Bob Dylan's song, "Forever Young," Wiebe's soprano voice soared and scored high with the judges. While Gold and Flex reiterated their liking for him, Jordan and Werner had some criticisms of their own despite acknowledging Wiebe's great talent as a singer. Jordan thought his performance was "a little studied" and Werner felt he "got stuck in a Clay Aiken universe" – a comment that some "Claymates" might take as a compliment.
Forever Young
Except it wasn't MEANT as a compliment.... Zack Werner said the performane "oozed cheese"! HOW can we take that as a compliment? I thought he was really great and voted my fingers off (well mostly to spite Zack) turns out he got the highest number of votes of the night! P.S. he looks somehow like Jim Carrey!

Manoah Hartmann
The Regina schoolteacher's version of "My Immortal" got high grades from all four judges. Werner and Gold both called Hartmann a "pro", with Werner believing she belonged in the Top 10. Jordan praised the singer for her ability to "tap into an emotional chord" while Flex commented, "You made the song a little better than it is."
My Immortal
I didn't like her performance... I liked the original song and felt she was always a little flat!

Those ever-unpredictable... Wildcards!!

user posted image

From left to right : Andrew Broderick, Jason Greeley, Ted Senecal, Elena Juatco, Kyla Sandulak, Raj Ramawad, Liz Titan, Bernard Quilala

Bernard Quilala
As Jake Gold explained, Quilala received a second chance to prove he's a fantastic and soulful singer after his Group Three performance failed to demonstrate his capabilities. Quilala opened up the show with the Motown hit, "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," but, unfortunately, his delivery didn't impress the judges. While Farley Flex commented, "Some wild, wild notes happened there," Zack Werner thought the singer might need a third chance to finally get it right.
I Heard It Through The Grapevine

Liz Titan
According to Flex, Titan deserved another shot at the Top 10 due to her tremendous talent as a young singer. Hoping to capitalize on her chance, Titan chose a song from the diva jukebox, Whitney Houston's "Try it On My Own", to show more of her vocal strength. Flex said it wasn't a bad performance but Sass Jordan felt a wall stood between them. Gold, however, hoped to see Titan move on and stated, "You are the only real diva that we have."
Try It On My Own

Raj Ramawad
Jordan and the judges brought Ramawad back with hopes of seeing more of his "rhythmic sensibility" and "soft, smooth flavour" that, according to Jordan, have not been seen elsewhere in the competition. Serving up more of Stevie Wonder, Ramawad did not disappoint the judges with his take on the ballad, "Lately". Comparing the singer to the likes of American Idol champ Ruben Studdard, Werner commented, "You got serious flavour." Flex agreed and thought Ramawad hit the elusive "Star Search moment."
Lately
I thought he did a really wonderful job with this song!

Kyla Sandulak
Believing Sandulak to be an artist reminiscent of Tori Amos and Chantal Kreviazuk, Werner hoped the second chance would allow the singer to show her own sense of artistry that he believed was missing during her jazzy performance in Group One. However, Sandulak failed to impress the judges for the second time with her chosen song, "Stand by Me." Werner thought the performance was no different from the last one though he claimed, "it wasn't bad." Jordan, on the other hand, expressed quite clearly, "You have a nice voice, but you really don't have anything particularly unique."
Stand By Me
I liked her quite a bit too... her voice reminds me of Karen Carpenters and I am a HUGE Carpenters fan.

Ted Senecal
A big man whose tone resembles that of the legendary Ray Charles was how Gold described Senecal, who was back on stage one week after his bid for the Top10 ended. Foregoing the jazz standard for Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World", Senecal showed a more playful side that struck a happy chord with the judges. Jordan called the singer "loveable." Gold and Flex thought he portrayed the emotion of the song. Werner, however, wasn't moved by Senecal and expressed his ennui: "I could hear the sound of remote controls changing channels all the way through that song."
Joy To The World
I didn't find it as nice as his last song... but I am in love with the way he sings "Georgia On My Mind

Andrew Broderick
Calling Broderick "a real wild card", Werner hoped the promising and multi-talented teen would use the second chance to prove to everyone his star quality. Taking John Lennon's "Imagine", Broderick added his own particular flavour -- a move the judges acknowledged somewhat favourably. Stressing Broderick's youth and potential, Werner said, "In three or four years, I'm gonna be fortunate enough to buy your records but, next week, I won't be seeing you in the Top 10."
Imagine
This didn't thrill me!

The two people to make it through.....

user posted image

Elena Juatco
Given Juatco's "natural abundance of entertainment value," Flex believed the singer would prove she knew when and how to apply her style and presence on stage. Singing the Broadway ballad, "What I Did for Love," Juatco toned things down but increased the praises she received from the judges. Flex thought she applied the entertainment value better than before. Jordan was impressed and said she "star-searched the moment." Werner remarked, "You're the kind of rare, special, unique entertainer that I wanna see in the Top 10."
What I Did For Love
*meh!*

Jason Greeley
According to Jordan, Greeley is "a perfect example of a natural performer," whose wide appeal earned him another shot at the finals. Greeley's tune, "Sad Songs" was far from sad as he rocked his way around the stage with a microphone stand and a smile for the camera. Delighted, Jordan piped, "See, you didn't let me down." Though Werner admitted he hated "that kind of stuff," he praised Greeley's efforts. "That was awesome. That was world class." Flex added, "You might have to wear a helmet. You just went through the roof of the wildcard into the Top 10."
Sad Songs
It was REALLY well done!

And that completes our Top Ten!
