It is not safe to be a mutant in America. Humans distrust mutants and call them freaks and spawns of the devil. They graffiti walls and throw bricks at those who are known to be mutants. Some mutants fight back and create human casualties; others simply get by as best they can and are thankful that things aren't any worse.
Everything staying the same is not likely.
There is no great official battle going on. There are no wide-scale massacres or brutal government laws. There are the Sentinels, robots employed by various agencies, and Weapon X experiments - mutants and humans alike who have been engineered to become living weapons. There are mercenaries and vigilantes. There is Weapon X, mutants made into weapons to kill other mutants - but it doesn't 'officially' exist. Officially there is a truce between human and mutantkind.
For mutants it is an uneasy truce. Not a day goes by when at least one mutant wonders if this is the day people will stop throwing stones at them and start hunting them to their homes. Many are faced with a choice of trying to pass completely as human and stay safe most of the time but be in danger from anti-human muntants or to openly be mutants and be persecuted daily. Others are just faced with the problem of getting through each day alive. New York City, New York, United States of America. Home to over 8 million people - humans and mutants. Life is pretty mundane for most. School, work, hobbies, relationships and basic living dominate the daily lives of most people. There is an added element of fear that is also considered almost mundane these days. Mutants go about their daily lives on the alert for a sign of anti-mutantism or something to be thrown at them; humans go around in the sometimes false, sometimes true fear that some mutant will take exception to them. And every day at least one of these fears is realised.
This is all about those daily lives. About the lives of the typical mutant and the typical human just getting through their day as best they can. Sometimes there's special events - a wedding, a death, a murder. It's also about the slightly less typical humans and mutants - the ones who belong to mutant groups such as the Morlocks, the Xmen, the Hellfire Club or the Brotherhood - or the ones who belong to the government or those run or are the victims of the Weapon X programme.
