yeah, shame the director's cut sucked. "Paint by Numbers" Donnie Darko. I went to see it at the Cambridge film festival, my goodness me staying up till some godawful hour of the morning to get the film explained at me - wasn't that fun.

Didn't seem that complex to me (well, the non-Director's Cut version, anyway). It was Mulholland Drive that required explaining to me...
I've seen people describe Mulholland Drive as their favourite film. I wonder if that was true or whether they were just trying to proclaim how clever they thought they were...

Knowing who it is you're referring to, I'd say probably the latter.
Goddamn intellectual snobs.
And they'd probably look down their noses at you for saying your favourite film was "Dude, Where's My Car?", too - wouldn't they Damo? :)

Most probably. ;)
But in fairness, in the place you read that you'll have noticed that my joint favourite films of all time were that and "The Killing Fields". And I may have been lying about one of the two...

Damn, the killing fields is a depressing film.
I liked Mulholland Drive, and i got it in a roundabout way; abour 6 of us went to see it then spent 2 hours around my kitchen table thrashing out what we agreed on as an "explanation".
David Lynch is the shiznit.

It is, but there's something very beautiful about it - and all the more remarkable for being true. I don't normally "do" depressing films but that one is something else.
