Lewis have you seen much of a difference in the different clone motors as far as timing?
I never thought of using a timimg light on flywheel. Won't help much as far as tuning a stock can't change anything But when start messing with mods and can degree motor in. I can remember when kid. My flathead. Dad playing moving cam and filing key way flywheel. With OHV looks like could get in trouble if not careful with valve over piston. We done lot of testing with the flat head. Many hrs put in on that motor. Dennis |

Dennis,
Though everyone would like to know where the timming mark is. I have seen as much as 5* timming in flywheels on these motors. Can help in timming area. Lewis -------------------- www.stoutracingengines.com

Lewis you're getting into 1 area of a real motor builders bread and butter. A lot of time testing. Then throw in different cams ect time testing. A lot of time involved. Using deg wheel to get numbers to compare and knowing what works.
Using timing light got me to thinking about several things could be used for. Main thing is teaching Brent and explaining to him how a combustion motor works. Even though I've taught brent few things about motor. I've never set down took him thru the strokes of a 4-stroke and explained what going on in motor to make it run. Using timing light shows where motor fires. So is starting point where location of piston and what cam is doing going thru the 4 strokes of the engine. Gives me a tool to explain process better and get him to thinking whats going on in motor. We have raced and messed with 2-strokes port timing ect. When set at table and put clone together that bought in pieces. Brent said lot more piecies to these motors. Lewis I do things different than whats recomended sometimes. I got 1st 2 motors preped jetted ect. Was done the way most recomend but I changed to what I thought worked better. If I posted what I found would more than likely be laughed off most forums. Deriell is only 1 I've talked to rpm's ect I tuned with jetting used ect. I don't post cause can't explain why works for us. Just don't have the knowledge with these motors to defend what we're doing. Most wouldn't believe me anyway. I've tuned 3 motors the same Brents kart with same result. When get moved settled in. I'm gonna give you a call and set a time.Brent and I will carry a motor for you to Dyno. I don't want to ship . Want to be ther and Brent see how's done. I want to see how far off Dyno says we are. I got ?'s as to why and we can check if you get readings I'm getting. See if see the same thing. I've never had a motor on dyno. Raced guys that have.I just tell them we test every week at track. On the clones getting rpm readings and not floating valves like most are saying they do. I've seen no need buying the stock trick springs ect. Our motors don't seen to like the lower rpms as well as what we run. Deriell has worked with me. I have made certain rpms work for different track conditions, different tires ect. I've proabley learned more this yr than any yr have been in racing anything. Deriell keeping me digging, playing trying things. Not just motor but total package tuning thru the racing season. Deriell kept me on top of track conditions and keeping kart close enongh. Brent was able to drive and do the rest. If didn't get rained out we will race Texas outlaw nationals Fri night. I am worried about package got together for Brent. Weather & track really changed since last time raced. I guess we'll see how Luck goes. I hope we do good enough to get teched or claimed. Dennis |

Dennis dino time is a short cut to getting your engine tuned . You can tell when a change is for the better or not . But I have found track testing is where you fine tune for the best results . I have a water dino but it's no good for the H.P. we are now making . I have track tuned for years and won quite a few races. Not saying I can out tune someone on a dino but I have beat a lot of dino tuned engines.
Jerry Dover is a great engine builder, I bought a Dover engine from a friend of mine that quit to race stock cars . It was the fastest flat head I ever owned . I got a blueprinted block from Dover and built another flat head it was a winner also . Ran them for 2 years I decided to send them back to Dover to freshen . He did excellent work sent me dino charts and everything . But I always wondered why the original was always slow on the starts. Would lose about 2 kart lengths on starts then get it back on the back stretch .So I started checking , changed timing and spring pressure and now it's fast from the start . Is it putting out more power then the dino charts said I dont know but it's faster then it was. It's now tuned to our needs . I'd say I could get any engine and make it better at the track . That's from track tuning experience, some people think once you get an engine from a dino that is the best you could have but it's not true .You can't duplicate your specific weather ,air density, temperature and humidity on a dino . You have learned a bunch about track tuning this year . This is important learning what you have . -------------------- Deriell Logan

Yea Deriell I'm curious more than anything. These motors are so close stock version. Get the motor close tuned. Running low HP motors. .10 sec off can get you lap down in a hurry. .10 sec can easily be kart set-up , driver. Even a axle bearing dragging a little. More than just motor.
When get out ther our motors may tune different. I think here most of motors tuned and preped (recomended by builders that parts orginate from). I see it on forums ect. One of reasond got the 2 motors preped. Didn't like what I seen after 1st time out. I mean they ran good but thought i could get better. Recomendations can get you close but you can sometimes make better tuning for you're track ,area, driver ect. About everyone we out ran this yr was driver error or kart off a little. In other words we raced the track better than the rest. Thers not much room for mistakes the motors are to close. We got rained out Fri. Nov 7th be running big 1/5 mi track 1st time. Brent & Jason will both race. This will be guess work. Brents never been on over 1/8 mi before in karts. This will be our last chance to race before move. Dennis |
