We are just starting out in karting. We are racing at a 1/5 mile dirt track in a blue clone only class. The track has open air filter, header, fuel pump/tank, and allows valve springs to 18lb, timing and no jetting. My questions is which valve springs should I run and should I advance the timing and if so to what?
Thanks for any help. |

aopenshaw,
First off DON'T turn it more than 6500 rpm with stock parts. We have several springs to chose from. Timing should be set with a 4* key. I don't understand no jetting. when you put a header and air filter adpter it requires jetting. Is your governor and oil sencor removed. We have all the parts you will need to get it ready. Lewis is rite about jetting .If you do all that your aloud to according to your rules your engine wont run without jetting to match the increase in air flow . With stock jets you would have to leave it the way you bought it , stock air filter and stock muffler. Anyone who puts no jetting in their rules knows nothing about engines. Even with a out of the box engine it's possible to get it running better by jetting . Extreme weather conditions calls for rejetting on any engine . If I was you I would try to get this out of your rules .
Ask whoever made the rules what the purpose of this rule is ? If they want to control RPM's do it with spring pressure and ignition timing not jetting . If you have open filter and exhaust you need to jet to control engine temperature. If you you have open header and air filter ,add 18 pound springs your engine will turn68or 6900 rpm's without advancing timing. Which is getting close to exploding a flywheel . Building by your rules will have a bunch of burnt up engines. But if you can get the jetting rule changed I would suggest also adding billet flywheel and billet rod for safety . -------------------- Deriell Logan

First of all you should smack the rule maker in the face. Then tell him to read about something before he starts putting rules together. After that explain to them how important jetting is. Building a motor without jetting it, is like making bread without flour
