LORD HAVE MERCY

The year is 1931. Wall Street is a mess. America has plunged into one of the greatest
economic depressions of all time. Unemployment rates are rising with every passing
minute. Money is scarce. People all over the country are pawning their possessions
for spare change. The nation is in a tunnel, and there doesn’t seem to be a light at the
end of it.

CHRIST HAVE MERCY

Welcome to Chicago – America’s organized crime capital.

Remember that chap Al Capone? Yeah, he’s in prison nowadays I think, but don’t worry,
life keeps on rolling for these criminals. The Italian Mafia is still going strong, and they’re
probably the biggest organized crime faction in the city. Then you’ve got the Hoffman
Gang which reformed a couple of years ago: banks are their specialty. Lately a lot of
other little mobs, the Russians and the Latinos most notably, have been causing a bit of
a stir. Then you’ve got your petty criminals. Needless to say the police force isn’t coping
all too well. Hell, half of them are too worried about whether or not their going to be
sacked, what, with the depression and all. My tone is decieving. Times are desperate.
Desperate times call for desperate measures.

The streets aren’t safe anymore. Every night there’s another murder, another mugging,
another robbery, and every night another person’s life changes forever. People go on,
some pretending that it doesn’t exist, some with their heads fixed firmly over their shou-
lders and others doing deals with the devil to try and buy themselves some more time
on this goddamned earth.

All we can really do is pray.
