I have a piece of advice.
Use the macro function on the camera. It is the tulip-shaped one. It lets you take cleaner photos of small pieces, such as miniatures. If you put them at the right distance and hold it steady enough, you can get photos like these (the last one isnīt much to look at, but you can see the result is definitely clean even for a group shot):

And something important as well. Iīm guessing you are using a digital camera. If this is the case, it is worhtwhile to take half a dozen photos of the same unit. From those, you can choose the ones with the best angle and distance. Hell, you can even see which ones turn out better, and combine them all to get the best photo possible. That is, choosing the angle that shows the most details, getting the distance right, putting the minis in the appropriate positions, etc...
Lord Jacobus - August 11, 2008 05:41 PM (GMT)
true enough lol, I have a camera stand coming in the mail from Shiva so when I get it I'l be able to take much better pics. Heck I'm likely going to take at least One pic of every squad I own lol. Thanks for the advice though Drakk, Il be useing it next time i take some pics
Shiva - August 11, 2008 06:44 PM (GMT)

an update on my sisters. Got some bits from my dear friend and i scratch built up a turret to turn a rhino to an imolator, do enjoy. Sorry for the quality of the pics, just got my new camera equipment and im still not fully use to it
wip of the turret

And a bit of news for you all. I placed an order with Games Workshop last night, It contained the following
2 Cadian Battle Forces
2 Basilisks
1 Cadian Shock Troopers Set
1 Kasrikan set
1 Deathwatch Killteam Upgrade
and The Battle For Skull Pass
I will be paying for the first 4 items on either the 21st or 22nd (hopefully) and the last too will be in September. Might be a little obvious, im starting a guard army. The idea, the 6th Cadian Mobile Infantry...hehehe I am considering either converting sentinals to look like the marauder suits from starship troopers 3. Or just buying some of the old TT games one and modding them to be more Imperial.
Yes I own Starship Troopers on VHS
No I hate the second one
Yes the third one was Farily good lol.
Lord Jacobus - August 13, 2008 02:01 PM (GMT)
New pic for ya, the completed base of the Dread.

please pardon the quality, it was 11:39 last night lol.
Shiva - August 13, 2008 02:22 PM (GMT)
Cool B) I like painting and tooling up Dreadnaught bases. Some of the best bases I've done are dread bases for my Penitent Engines
Lord Jacobus - August 13, 2008 02:28 PM (GMT)
mm Im realy going to have to get me one o those lol.
Shiva - August 13, 2008 02:33 PM (GMT)
Oh no, not just one! You've gotta have at least 2 or 3. Tis more fun that way! :D I have 3 and let me tell you - when you plop three of those bad girls down on your side of the table I guarantee your opponant's jaw will drop and those will be one of the first things they go after! Those models definatly have an "Oh S#it!" factor to them. :D

Lord Marshal Jacobus (Counts as High Marshal Helbercht) and the Masters of the Chapter

Crusader Bodyguard for my Inquisitor

The new Dreadnaught.. again

This is the paint scheme I will be doing for my Ordo Heriticus Stormtroopers. (they are a steel legion squad with a grenade launcher and this plasma gun, transported in a Chimera) It may be the sameish scheme I paint the MI's in, but Im not totaly sure yet. Also not sure how I would use this scheme with vehicles. I think maybe with the Cadians they will get some camoflauge.

Lord Jacobus - August 25, 2008 06:11 PM (GMT)
just a small update, as i finaly got some batteries lol.
Steel Legion models, there almost done but theres a Few things left to do

Bob

Colonel Carl (yes.. starship troopers, its the driving theme behind this army)

Rico

Missile Launcher team

I love giving them cover, looks so much cooler no?

lascannon

Lord Jacobus - August 25, 2008 06:11 PM (GMT)
Vets with shotguns

Veteran Sarge

plasma gun

and then two of my four sentinals
i swear their like a mix between an AT-ST and an AT-PT thus i put the smoke launchers on the side of one to further mimic the star wars look

What I donīt like about your guardsmen is that the painting scheme is bland, and the only thing thatīs gonna help with that is making them very, very detailed. With inking, painted faces, etc... something worthy of a Golden Demon, more often than not. You definitely need to practice a little more, and by practice I donīt mean paint a lot of miniatures fast, mind you, but picking up one and painting it as well as you think you possibly can.
This will help you figure out the limit of your skill. For example, I know that it is impossible for me to paint tiny corners like the eyes in one or two strokes. Generally, what I do, is first paint the eyes white, not minding if I stain the rest of the face. Then, put black dots on them. And finally, paint the rest of the face.
Allow me to offer a few painting tips that I hope will help you make the painting process easier, and faster, and maybe opening the way for other ideas:
Now, this piece of advice is an important one: Donīt glue your minis together before starting to paint. What I do with Imperial Guardsmen (as an example) is glue together the legs, the torso and the ammo, canteen and bayonet. Grenades too sometimes. With that done, paint the parts you know will be hard to paint then (for example, the chest, the neck of the uniform, the clavicles, etc...). This way, you can later glue the other pieces with those difficult-to-reach pieces not needing to be painted later (it is impossible to paint the inner side of the arms holding lasguns if you donīt do it before hand).
For those little corners where it is hard to reach and paint (like the plasmagun exhaust), I suggest watering your paint a bit, to the point that it almost drips. That way, you can just "drop" it in.
Also, details are sometimes better painted first than last. And a tip on those, is making them shiny. If you want to make shiny visors and glasses, the easiest way to do this is painting them white first, then red, green, or whatever colour you want them to be.
Hope these help you.
Lord Jacobus - August 25, 2008 09:55 PM (GMT)
it does , sadly i have allready finished putting together a 10 man squad, but the next one i shall try painting on the sprue.

| it is impossible to paint the inner side of the arms holding lasguns if you donīt do it before hand |
that is So incredibly true, i have toyed with the idea of painting on the sprue before Just because of that, but iv never gotten around to it.
As for the colour scheme i will agree with you, it is bland. I am toying with the idea of a different colour for the armour but i just Cant find the right shade of greenish grey like the armour in starship troopers. and i refuse to paint the armour black.. had enough of that with my templars thanks lol. I dont suppose you would have any suggestions for a colour?
Also as to watering the paints il try that tonight and let ya know how it went, but it sounds like it will work well.
Captain Seato - August 26, 2008 12:22 AM (GMT)
You don't need to do all your detailing with paint, either; a lot of the details in my minis were brought out exceptionally well by using a light ink wash. And it's cheap too, as a single bottle of ink, if carefully rationed, will last quite a while (useful for every PDF general on a budget). It's particularly effective for eyes, IMO, if you don't mind your Guardsmen having that hardcore, steely-eyed, "Come Get Some!" squint.
Lord Jacobus - August 26, 2008 12:38 AM (GMT)
well.. that would certinly work for a starship troopers themed force... but how Exactly does the wash work, is it that you just brush it onto the surface?
Captain Seato - August 26, 2008 01:56 AM (GMT)
1/4 ink, 3/4 water mixture is what I've used. And yes, just brush it on the surface of the model, making sure it gets in the nooks and crannies.
Lord Jacobus - August 26, 2008 02:02 AM (GMT)
il defo be looking into getting some hopefuly tommorow after my date lol. any particular suggestions for colour?
Paradox 01 - August 26, 2008 03:00 AM (GMT)
Dude, don't take this the wrong way but yeah, you need some work.
Here's some pointers straight from GW. And here's a few from me:
1) Thin your paints. It's a monumental pain in the ass, but you avoid the clumpy look and obvious brush strokes.
2) Base your minis. Ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different answers on how to do this (dark base vs light base), but the end result is that you end up with a consistent base for your theme (i.e. using blues vs browns for a white base).
3) Own a wide variety of brushes, from 000 to 5. Use them appropriately.
4) Hit every bit of the model. I can throw a breadroll and hit half a dozen areas of your minis (especially your tanks) that you missed with your brush. Again, this goes back to using multiple coats of thin paint.

I actually used the Parking Lot budget method. You can get a surprisingly good quality of sand/thin gravel by just making a quick sweep through a home parking lot or driveway. Not a hell of a lot of it, but it works great for sand/rubble bases, and it made for some great finishing touches on my kid brother's Grey Knights.
Drakkar Windrider - August 26, 2008 08:55 AM (GMT)
Unfortunately, Cadian Guardsmen only allow you to represent one kind of Starship Troopers, and it might not be the kind you want. The movie ones.
Those are easy. Light grey, black for anything that looks like a strap, and Codex Grey for armor.
Lord Jacobus - August 26, 2008 01:25 PM (GMT)
I was thinking that but, after watching the movie godknows how many times, and it could just be the degrading quailty of VHS, the armour looks slightly green. The ones from Heinlens book are more accurately represented by space marines if anything.
BeRzErKeR - August 26, 2008 02:25 PM (GMT)
The ones from the book would be most accurately represented by Assault Marines with a flamer, a meltagun, a plasma gun, and a grenade launcher each. But that, unfortunately, is illegal.
You certainly paint better than I do, Jacobus. I haven't painted at all recently; it's frankly a pain in the ass. But I painted some Orks a while ago, and they, um, sucked. Your models are much better.
Lord Jacobus - November 14, 2008 09:27 PM (GMT)
